In 2004, a 4-year-old was killed in Sderot by rocket fire from the neighboring Gaza Strip. The child's death prompted Israel's Ministry of Defense to examine how to further protect southern communities from indiscriminate rocket attacks.
In 2007, the fundamentalist militant group Hamas comes to power in Gaza, and rocket fire increases throughout Israel's southern cities. Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz, a resident of Sderot, is torn between an American laser system and an invention beyond anyone's imagination — Iron Dome.
Israel develops Iron Dome in an insanely short period of time (only 3 years). In 2011, Captain Maor Gabriel uses the system to intercept the first rocket over Ashkelon, and history seems to be changing.

Cafe Taamon, King Georgestreet, Jerusalem Golda Meir drank coffee here and so did Shimon Peres. The Taamon is one of the oldest cafes in Jerusalem and it is world famous. It has been a meeting place for radical political activists, artists, politicians and the literati. Israel and its political development have been fervidly debated here, in the past as well as today. The cafe is history in a microcosm. Established in 1936, a Jewish family took it over again in the 60s. Together with Hamis, a Muslim, they cater for their guests day after day. The director precisely documents their everyday life. He shows the bistro, its owners and customers. He moves away from them to investigate stories and comes back again, to Taamon.

Ashkenazim-Jews of European origin-are Israel's "white folks." And like most white folks in a multicultural society, they see themselves as the social norm and don't think of themselves in racial or ethnic terms because by now, "aren't we all Israeli?" Yiddish has been replaced with Hebrew, exile with occupation, the shtetl with the kibbutz and old-fashioned irony with post-modern cynicism. But the paradox of whiteness in Israel is that Ashkenazim aren't exactly "white folks" historically - A story that begins in the Rhineland and ends in the holy land (or is it the other way around?), ASHKENAZ looks at whiteness in Israel and wonders: How did the "Others" of Europe become the "Europe" of the others.
