The tradition of Chan Buddhism - more popularly known as Zen - has been romanticized throughout its history. In this book, John R. McRae shows how modern critical techniques, supported by recent manuscript discoveries, make possible a more skeptical, accurate, and - ultimately - productive assessment of Chan lineages, teaching, fundraising practices, and social organization. Synthesizing twenty years of scholarship, "Seeing Through Zen" offers new, accessible analytic models for the interpretation of Chan spiritual practices and religious history. Writing in a lucid and engaging style, McRae traces the emergence of this Chinese spiritual tradition and its early figureheads, Bodhidharma and the 'sixth patriarch' Huineng, through the development of Zen dialogue and koans. In addition to constructing a central narrative for the doctrinal and social evolution of the school, "Seeing Through Zen" examines the religious dynamics behind Chan's use of iconoclastic stories and myths of patriarchal succession. McRae argues that Chinese Chan is fundamentally genealogical, both in its self-understanding as a school of Buddhism and in the very design of its practices of spiritual cultivation. Furthermore, by forgoing the standard idealization of Zen spontaneity, we can gain new insight into the religious vitality of the school as it came to dominate the Chinese religious scene, providing a model for all of East Asia - and the modern world. published in 2009). Readings of the Platform Sūtra is intended to open
up the original text to new readers and advance scholarship in the

《经学历史(竖排版)》是第一部完整的中国经学史。在书中，皮锡瑞以今文经举作为经学的正宗源头，在经学发展各时期的叙述中，以今文经学在各个时期舶发展为依归而进行判别。全书共分十个部分，分别论述经学在各个历史时期的发展过程。

本书围绕中古著述中的纬书内容，以及具体政治活动中所体现的纬学思想，探讨中古时代知识、信仰与政治合法性的关系。"纬书"相对"经书"而言，主要指"七纬"，包括《易纬》、《诗纬》、《乐纬》、《尚书纬》、《春秋纬》、《礼纬》、《孝经纬》及《论语谶》，其将经义的解释与阴阳五行、天人感应等结合，诡为隐语，预决吉凶。在王者仁政学说随宋明理学兴起之前，以天人感应和五德终始学说为基础的纬学思想，始终是中古政治理论的核心。与之相关的符瑞、灾异、德运、占候、天文、历法、音律、堪舆等内容，是古人知识体系的重要组成部分，有其严密的内在逻辑，并且在当时的政治社会生活中发挥着重要的作用。在没有现代政治学说可以凭借的背景下，"太平"、"祥瑞"、"灾异"、"天命"等等，是主要的政治语言。而"龙图"、"凤纪"、"景云"、"河清"等，是主要的政治符号。本书所涉课题，不仅为中古知识、信仰世界的重要一环，又事关政治起伏与思想跌宕之关系，进而以中古为样本，对理解整个人类历史中政权合法性的塑造也有一定思考。

洪迈（1123-1202），南宋著名文学家，字景卢，号容斋，鄱阳（今江西波阳）人。绍兴进士，官至端明殿学士。他学识渊博，一生涉猎典籍颇多，被称为博治通儒。撰著除《容斋随笔》外，还有志怪小集《夷坚志》，并编有《万首唐人绝句》等。

唐代後期的南方開發過程中，江西在戶口、經濟、人文等各方面均呈現高度的發展，其開發速度明顯勝於其他地區。當時的江西並未如南朝時受到中央重視，在唐朝前期僅在州縣戶口方面有發展，何以在唐朝後期突然能有快速、多方面的發展？其次，唐代江西的人文發展，在各方面的發展中是最特出。唐代以前，江西的人文基礎相當薄弱，出身該處的人才很少；唐代後期該地不但進士數居全國第三，並有狀元二人。大量進士在唐代後期登場的原因何在？唐代江西的發展成果對宋代江西地區有何影響？藉此說明宋代江西人文高度成就的由來。本文即以此三主題為中心，討論唐代江西地區的開發。
歷來學界的研究，不是偏重於開發現象的敘述，就是側重個別現象的分析，至於各現象間的交互作用，並沒有作進一步的討論分析。再者，江西地區的開發研究，究竟是由國家主導？或者授權進行？或者被地方勢力滲入而取代，凡此問題，都有待進一步研究。其次，江西一地在開發過程中呈現的特殊性為何，為作進一步探討唐代江西地區的開發，本文分由下列四方面探討：一、地理環境，二、州郡戶口，三、經濟發展，四、人文發展。

《神会和尚禅话录》所收神会的文录实际主要是宣传南宗[顿教]禅法的谈话和讲演的记录 ，故决定题为神会和尚禅话录，由三部分组成：一，正编，有新校敦博本坛语、南宗定是非论、重校南阳和尚问答杂微义等，文前曾皆加编校按语，说明所依底本、参照资料及编校体例等。二、附编，从宋高僧传及景德传灯录禅宗史书上抄录的神会的传记和禅法的资料，以备参考。三、研究，发表笔者的两篇研究论文，供读者参考，普请指教。

《中国佛教史》为二十世纪上半叶中国近代教育家、佛教家蒋维乔居士在日本学者境野哲先生《支那佛教史纲》基础上撰写的著作，对民国以后的中国佛教研究曾起过积极的作用，堪称经典。仍不失为一本了解中国佛教历史的基本读物。

It was through the propaganda of Shen-hui (684-758) that Hui-neng (d. 710) became the also today still towering figure of sixth patriarch of Ch’an/Zen Buddhism, and accepted as the ancestor or founder of all subsequent Ch’an lineages.
The first part of the book analyses the creation of the image of Hui-neng and the worship of a lacquered mummy said to be that of Hui-neng. Using the life of Confucius as a template for its structure, Shen-hui invented a hagiography for the then highly obscure Hui-neng. At the same time, Shen-hui forged a lineage of patriarchs of Ch’an back to the Buddha using ideas from Indian Buddhism and Chinese ancestor worship. The second half of the book examines the production of the hagiographies of Hui-neng , how they evolved, and the importance of ideas about authorship and the role of place. It demonstrates the influence of Confucian thought, politics and the periphery in the growth of early Ch’an hagiography and the changing image of Hui-neng.

The Chan (Zen in Japanese) school of Chinese Buddhism began when, in the seventh century, a small religious community gathered around a Buddhist monk named Hongren. Over the centuries, Chan Buddhism grew from an obscure movement to an officially recognized and eventually dominant form of Buddhism in China and throughout East Asia. In this book Albert Welter presents, for the first time in a comprehensive fashion in a Western work, the story of the rise of Chan, a story which has been obscured by myths about Zen. Zen apologists in the twentieth century, Welter argues, sold the world on the story of Zen as a transcendental spiritualism untainted by political and institutional involvements. In fact, Welter shows that the opposite is true: relationships between Chan monks and political rulers were crucial to Chan's success. The book concentrates on an important but neglected period of Chan history, the 10th and 11th centuries, when monks and rulers created the so-called Chan "golden age" and the classic principles of Chan identity.
