一对老夫妇将信将疑，希望一探究竟。科学家先将一幅画映射出来，接着请出女助手占到摄像头前。大屏幕立刻出现女子的形象，并频频对老头子搔首弄姿。接着老太太也跃跃欲试，得到了莫大的快乐。跟着老头也坐到摄像头前，大屏幕上却出现了一张猴子的面孔。老头大为光火，打翻幕布，大闹实验室。科学家和他的助手们则笑得直不起腰来……

A man in a silk top hat stands in front of an empty aquarium. He pours water into his hat and goes fishing, hooking a small one. He bec omes a hobo and catches more and more fish from the hat. Then he starts pulling out rabbits. The backdrop becomes the sea, and a mermaid appears. She flirts and beguiles us. The mermaid becomes a woman who leaves the sea and joins the magician, who becomes Neptune.

业余工程师和他的仆人约翰拜访炼金师，希望从他那里获得法术以环游世界。魔鬼假扮的炼金师（Georges Méliès 乔治•梅里爱 饰）给他们可以幻化万物的魔法珍珠，条件是必须出卖灵魂作为交换。两人不以为然，拿着珍珠径自离去，此举惹怒魔鬼，率领自己的随从尾随其后。
工程师和约翰将行李箱变成火车，带着家人出发。魔鬼施展魔法，一路给他们制造不少麻烦。最后只剩下工程师和约翰狼狈前行，然而恶灵依然不散，两人吃不饱，睡不暖。工程师变出黄金马车，反被魔鬼推入火山，两人却因此得以奔驰长空。但是，与魔鬼的契约真的就此便能逃避吗？
