Hans Giebenrath lives among the dull and respectable townsfolk of a sleepy Black Forest village. When he is discovered to be an exceptionally gifted student, the entire community presses him onto a path of serious scholarship. Hans dutifully follows the regimen of study and endless examinations, his success rewarded only with more crushing assignments. When Hans befriends a rebellious young poet, he begins to imagine other possibilities outside the narrowly circumscribed world of the academy. Finally sent home after a nervous breakdown, Hans is revived by nature and romance, and vows never to return to the gray conformity of the academic system.

Ähnlich wie das Malen war die Beschäftigung im Freien für ihn eine erholsame Abwechslung von der Tätigkeit am Schreibtisch. Die Gartenarbeit war seine »Zuflucht aus der Welt des Papiers«. Sie war ihm auch behilflich beim Fortspinnen von Phantasiefäden, zur Meditation und Kontemplation. In Erzählungen, Betrachtungen und Gedichten hat Hermann Hesse über das harmonische Zusammenspiel von Zier- und Nutzpflanzen, Blumen, Sträuchern und Bäumen, ihr Werden und Vergehen im Wechsel der Jahreszeiten berichtet. Die schönsten dieser Schilderungen, von der 1908 entstandenen »Betrachtung Im Garten« bis zu der berühmten Verserzählung »Stunden im Garten«, sind in diesem neu illustrierten Geschenkband versammelt.

Hermann Hesse ist zweifelsohne einer der bedeutendsten Schriftsteller Deutschlands. Dass der 1877 in Calw geborene Nobelpreisträger auch über eine verblüffende Weitsichtigkeit verfügte, ist nachzulesen in "Hermann Hesse: China - Weisheit des Ostens". In einer Zeit, als hierzulande die Feindbilder von der "gelben Gefahr" zur Tagesordnung gehörten, war es Hesse, der China für sich entdeckte und seine zukünftige Bedeutung für die Welt vorausahnte. Er war voller Sympathie für die Kultur des Landes, "gemischt mit einer Ahnung von Rivalität, von Gefahr; mir schien, das Volk von China müssen wir studieren wie einen gleichwertigen Mitbewerber". Was heute als Allgemeingut gilt, war zu Zeiten kolonialer Eurozentristik revolutionär. Für Hesse stellten abendländisches und fernöstliches Denken Pole einer Einheit dar, die sich nicht ausschließen, sondern ergänzen. Diese Einschätzung fand Niederschlag in Hesses Werken, vor allem in "Siddhartha". Um die unterschiedlichen Facetten des chinesischen Einflusses aufzuzeigen, wählte der Herausgeber Volker Michels in seinem Buch eine Dreiteilung. Am spannendsten ist der erste Teil über Parabeln und Gedichte. Im zweiten Teil nimmt Hesse mit Hilfe seiner vor Ort gesammelten Eindrücke den Leser mit auf eine Reise in die Welt der Chinesen der zehner und zwanziger Jahre. Der dritte Teil besteht aus veröffentlichten Buchkritiken Hesses; hier hätte eine Liste mit Hesses Empfehlungen genügt. Emil Sinclair is a young boy raised in a bourgeois home, amidst what is described as a Scheinwelt, a play on words that means "world of light" as well as "world of illusion". Emil's entire existence can be summarized as a struggle between two worlds: the show world of illusion (related to the Hindu concept of maya) and the real world, the world of spiritual truth. In the course of the novel, accompanied and prompted by his mysterious classmate 'Max Demian', he detaches from and revolts against the superficial ideals of the world of appearances and eventually awakens into a realization of self.

The pilgrims' ultimate destination is the East, the "Home of the Light," where they expect to find spiritual renewal. Yet the harmony that ruled at the outset of the trip soon degenerates into open conflict. Each traveler finds the rest of the group intolerable and heads off in his own direction, with H.H. bitterly blaming the others for the failure of the journey. It is only long after the trip, while poring over records in the League archives, that H.H. discovers his own role in the dissolution of the group, and the ominous significance of the journey itself.
