When Mary Lambert sang the hook for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' 2012 hit "Same Love," her career transformed. She quickly went from perfor ming at coffee shops in Seattle — "to six people, including my mom," as she tells it — to performing on Ellen, at the MTV Video Music Awards and the Grammys.
Now, Lambert is releasing her debut solo album, Heart on My Sleeve. Still, she says the opportunity "Same Love" provided her still has her in disbelief.
"It's so much a part of my artistic identity," the singer and songwriter tells NPR's Arun Rath. "I can't really believe that that's my breakout song, a song about gay rights and social justice existing in the pop world. Like, that's my introduction? That's pretty cool."
Lambert was in the midst of applying to graduate programs for teaching when received the phone call from Macklemore and Lewis. She says the song came at the right time in her life, a moment when her identity as both gay and Christian felt like a daily contradiction.
"My Christian friends were like, 'We love you; you're still going to hell.' And my gay friends were like, 'Why are you hanging with a group of people that don't value your rights?'" she says. "I wanted to think really critically about, what would I tell the world if I had the opportunity about my point of view? You don't accomplish a lot by changing people's opinions by shoving facts down their throat. I think you change people's opinions by opening your heart up and showing the parallels between you and another person. That's how people's ideas shift."
Lambert spoke with NPR's Arun Rath about finding her own audience after "Same Love," incorporating poetry and spoken word into music and covering Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl." Hear more of their conversation at the audio link.

Prism is the upcoming fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry. The album is scheduled to be released on October 22, 2013, by Capitol Records, as the follow up to her third album, Teenage Dream (2010). The album is preceded by the release of its lead single, "Roar", which made its radio debut on August 10, 2013 and was released onto iTunes and YouTube on August 12, 2013.

South California rockers, The Material have announced that they will release a new album entitled, “Everything I Want To Say,” produced by Kyle Black (Paramore, Pierce The Veil, All Time Low), on April 9th. This upcoming release follows the success of the band’s last full-length, “What We Are,” released in January 2011.

Vivian Girls never drifted far from the music scene between their self-titled debut and their less-hyped followup, Everything Falls Apart. This tradition continues to hold true now as the time-frame of their third album is announced.
Besides seeming to always be on tour, the indie-punks all have their hands in enough other projects to start their own label, but more on their label situation in a minute. Extra-Vivian activities, in fact, claimed a casualty in drummer Ali Koehler, who now claims Best Coast as her sole gig. But still, with lead singer Cassie Ramone playing with The Babies and releasing an album in November (not to mention a solo record called Zenith in early 2011) and Kickball Katy working on side-project All Saint’s Day and new solo project La Sera, which will also have a release in early 2011, the ladies understand the importance of now and are taking advantage of all the potentially temporary opportunities the spotlight can offer.
And thus, with so many side-projects in active stages, it’s mystifying that the Vivian Girls found time to write and begin recording their third effort, titled Share The Joy, which is now scheduled to see a release in Spring 2011 on their brand-new home, Polyvinyl. This puts them in the company of Japandroids (potentially awesome tour alert!) and of Montreal (potentially awkward tour alert!) and will probably cause a change in the amount of support they receive for Share The Joy’s release, one of the benefits of being on a major indie. As for the drummer situation, well, they even found time to solve that problem and now have one in Fiona Campbell (via Pitchfork).
As stated, recording is not even finished yet, but the band members are all on the side-project kick until the end of the year. I know it seems like a long time, but you’ll be bouncing around or creepily staring at a Vivian Girls show in no time.

In 1995, the indie rock trio lurched headlong into its own sound with Electr-O-Pura. Now, newly reissued on vinyl, the pop-focused and densely referential album remains a monument in the band’s catalog.

Geek the Girl is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Lisa Germano. A breakthrough of sorts for her, it was released in 1994 by record label 4AD, just six months after the re-release of her previous album, Happiness.

As her hands dance around the instrument's antennas, Lydia Kavina proves the theremin is no mere producer of Hollywood sound effects. Russian theremin virtuoso Kavina presents the first release EVER dedicated solely to original compositions for the instrument - spanning the "golden age" of the theremin from its invention in the 1920s to contemporary works. One of the first attempts to unite music and scientific technology in the 20th century, the theremin is considered to be the ancestor of modern electronic musical instruments. Its evolution from scientific curiosity (discussed in scientific journals and manufactured by RCA) to virtuoso classical instrument (played by Clara Rockmore in Carnegie Hall) to "instrument of the future" (according to Cage, Varse, Grainger and others) to Hollywood sound effect (played in soundtracks to Spellbound, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Lost Weekend, etc.) to rock-and-roll instrument (used by The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Phish, Portishead and others) has been well documented. This disc is full of discoveries, including Martinu's Fantasia, and Percy Grainger's graphically notated Free Music #1 (1935) for 4 theremins, along with other "period" works by Schillinger (known for his writings on music and as a guru to composers from Gershwin to Earle Brown) and Isidor Achron (the accompanist to Heifetz). Modern works are represented by Kavina herself, Brazilian Jorge Antunes (with electronic tape) and Russian Vladimir Komarov, whose work also incorporates the inventor's voice and a rendition of Glinka's infamous The Lark, which Theremin had performed for Lenin to demonstrate the instrument. Lydia Kavina is the world's leading thereminist today. The granddaughter of Leon Theremin's first cousin, she was the inventor's last protŽgŽe. She began studying the instrument with him at the age of nine, and was concertizing by age fourteen. Since then, Kavina has given over 500 performances. She has also appeared in Howard Shore's soundtracks to eXistenZ and the Oscar-winning movie Ed Wood, and has performed in the Tom Waits/Robert Wilson collaborations Alice and The Black Rider. Kavina now serves on the lecture staff of The Glinka Museum and is affiliated with the Theremin Center, both in Moscow.

No Cities to Love is the eighth studio album by American rock band Sleater-Kinney, released on January 20, 2015, through Sub Pop.

The women in the Seattle pop punk group Chastity Belt met and formed in college, and their debut is sly and charming about college, and fresh-out-of-college concerns. No Regerts breathes some of the same untroubled air as the first Vampire Weekend album.
