Last summer, Daughter and acclaimed composer/arranger Joe Duddell were brought together by Festival No.6 to participate in a unique project.
As the festival’s Composer-in-Residence Duddell, whose impressive CV has seen him collaborate with Elbow and compose for the BBC Proms, approached Daughter with an idea for the band to perform their songs enhanced by a classical ensemble. Daughter, who have always wanted to explore this area, agreed to his proposal immediately. With the green light given, Duddell set about crafting classical arrangements for five tracks from Daughter’s debut album If You Leave, which the band, together with an 8-piece ensemble, performed in front of an audience of 120 people in Portmeirion Town Hall.
4AD Session filmmakers Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth were lucky enough to witness that mesmerising performance, and both they and the band were keen to re-enact that sense of intimacy for a wider audience. “Daughter is a special band – there’s a unique chemistry and a work ethic, a effortless, instinctive talent between these three people,” Iain and Jane say. “We knew we needed to find the optimal conditions and collaborators to ensure that everything was aligned to allow the same magic to happen - the same musicians, Joe Duddell at the helm – but this time in the country's best recording studio and recorded by the acclaimed Olga Fitzroy amidst a delicate set by art director Sal Pittman."
After further developing the arrangements for those same five songs for the Session, Duddell handpicked and assembled a talented cast of young musicians to make up a 10-piece classical ensemble, all of whom are either current students or recent graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music. Art Director Sal Pittman was also drafted in – her delicate paper birds hang serenely in the space above and around the musicians. In the acoustically and visually stunning Air Studios, Pollard and Forsyth captured the trio of Elena Tonra, Igor Haefeli and Remi Aguilella plus Duddell and the RNCM ensemble performing five tracks.

I Am the Last of All the Field That Fell: A Channel is the hallucinatory new album from PickNickMagick Skipsters Current 93. Clocking in at 68 minutes in length, the disc is packaged in a full-color digipack designed by David Tibet with a 24-page booklet containing all lyrics, credits and photographs of the band. Channelling C93 for this River are: Jack Barnett (These New Puritans), James Blackshaw, Ossian Brown (Cyclobe), Nick Cave, Antony Hegarty, Reinier van Houdt, Norbert Kox, Andrew Liles, Tony (TS) McPhee (The Groundhogs), Jon Seagroatt (Comus), Carl Stokes (The Groundhogs), David Tibet, Bobbie Watson (Comus) and John Zorn.

Invada Records are pleased to announce the release of a split LP between Brighton’s Esben and the Witch and elemental Bristol fuzz-peddlers Thought Forms, due for release April 7th. It comes off the back of critically lauded outings from both acts last year – the former with Wash the Sins Not Only the Face and the latter with Ghost Mountain.
Recalling the classic era of split singles in the US underground – think of those heady early Sub Pop days where you’d get Mudhoney and Sonic Youth covering one another on either side of a 7”, aka record collector heaven – it’s the perfect manifestation of both acts’ prodigious and earnest approach to touring: a collection of songs forged with the drama and meticulous craft that come from the trial and error of weeks spent on the road testing new material.
Esben’s side immediately reaches a fever pitch as ‘No Dog’ drags itself up from the primordial ooze of Sonic Youth’s early years mastery of cacophony and dissonance, underpinned by the volatile rhythmic propulsion of Fugazi or Hoover. The lone voice left unadorned in the eye of the storm comes from bassist and vocalist Rachel Davies, who summons up the fiery catharsis of Chelsea Wolfe or Sharon Van Etten. The trio’s other contribution here, ‘Butoh’, pursues an altogether more tribal path, kicking up a fury and intensity rarely matched this side of the pond these days.
Thought Forms find an equally cathartic voice across their four songs, but achieve it by totally different means: dressing their tracks up with the swirling swathes of guitar you’d expect from the dreamier edges of the ‘80s US lexicon. ‘For the Moving Stars’ jolts forward from the off with the sort of driving, hypnotic lead lines you’d expect from J Mascis, that is were he armed with Steve Turner’s pedal collection. ‘Your Bones’, meanwhile, is a disarming slow-burner that creeps its way into the back of your mind, erupting from what could have been an early Low cut into an uphill battle against tumbling drums and guitars that crackle like a bonfire on a crisp Autumn night.
In an age where music – outside of healthy fetishist niches – feels more and more dominated by digital formats, the LP serves as a love letter to shelves and record store bins stacked with hidden gems. If the music is anything to go by though, this is far from bargain basement fodder.

As some of you may have gathered from various social media updates over the past year we’ve been working on a new record. It’s taken it’s time, but we’re very happy to say that it’s finally finished and we’re really, really happy with it.
Our fourth album is called ‘Fair Youth‘, and it will be in your hands and ears on the 25th August 2014 through the good people at Superball Music.
It’s been recorded at Seamus Wong and Park Farm studios with our very own Jamie Ward’s steady hand at the production helm once again, and it was mastered last week by Mr. Tom Woodhead at Hippocratic Mastering.
In related news, we’re pleased to be able to announce our first UK Headline show for what feels like a really, really long time. We’ll be playing downstairs at The Garage, London on 17th October. This is by far our biggest UK headline show to date, so we’d love you all to join us.
