This compilation had been on the label’s to do list for ages but it was only when Twitch and Glasgow’s Fergus Clark started crossing swords over what actually constituted Fourth World music that the project really got going. Twitch decided that co-compiling the release with someone who had a slightly different take on things might make for a more interesting finished release, and so it came to pass that a cohesively thrilling compilation quickly materialised as each of them drew from a wealth of different artists and eras.
For the uninitiated, here’s an extract from Fergus Clark’s sleeve notes honing in on how the term Fourth World (an idea conjured up by Jon Hassell in the early 80s) might be defined -
“What we have attempted to gather across this compilation is a body of work which we feel directly resonates with both the literal definition of ‘Fourth World’ music and indeed our own interpretation of this unique sonic vision; from the work of the late Jorge Reyes, a Mexican musician who combined pre-hispanic instruments with synthesisers and digital sampling, through to the work of organic ambient ensemble O Yuki Conjugate. There are tracks which utilise custom, home-made instruments and there are tracks built from scratch using the latest in digital technology, but the undercurrent tying each piece together is this deeply personal feeling of intrigue and mysterious elation. Strange and unparalleled, this feeling manages to eschew geographic borders and rigid genre movements in favour of something which manages to evoke an inner sanctum, a musical private place for both reflection and assessment. This is music grounded in nor the past nor the present, music which manages to sound futuristic yet remarkably nostalgic. “

Initially the release was going to be a double CD featuring one song from every band (50) on the label, but that idea grew to include a 100+ page booklet that would include photos and text about the bands and the history of the label. Later a third CD was added, this one featuring unreleased or rare material from the Dischord vaults, as well as some CD-ROM video files of archival footage of performances from some of the early bands. 73 songs from various artists including The Teen Idols, Minor Threat, Gray Matter, Beefeater, The Snakes, Slant 6, Shudder To Think and many more. Two decades. Twenty years. Twenty compilations. Over 400 tracks. Over two days of total playing time and countless coloured dots. If someone would have told us in 1999, when we put together TOTAL 1 that this would turn into one of the longest standing compilation series in techno world we would have laughed out loud. But here we are – in the year 2020 which will probably go down in history as the most difficult period ever for club culture. But we won’t stop doing what we’re doing. Music is our oxygen. We’ll dance together soon again.

In the mid-‘70s, the young London-based writer Jon Savage captured the destructive energy of the emerging punk scene in the pages of his self-published fanzine London’s Outrage. While many fanzine authors moved on to other things after punk’s dissolution, Savage kept writing. Eventually he published England’s Dreaming: an expansive history of the U.K. punk scene that's one of the most thoughtful and comprehensive treatments of it in print. It should come as no surprise that the compilation Fame: Jon Savage’s Secret History of Post-Punk is far more revealing than your average genre primer. Sure, major figures like Wire, Joy Division, Pere Ubu, and others are represented here, but Fame really shines when Savage focuses on some of the more underappreciated artists of the post-punk era. The unsettlingly abstract “A New Kind of Water” by This Heat is one of the more shockingly unorthodox recordings here, while DNA's fractured and dissonant (but rhythmically sophisticated) “Blonde Redhead” practically defined the aesthetic of New York’s emerging No Wave scene.

Sound as mood altering substance is a well-covered trope in the annals of dance music, but rarely do the genre’s historians look beyond ecstasy when discussing how music effects/affects the mind. Psychotropia is a look at the in-between periods that make up most nights, from the literal come up and come down to countless hours spent in bathroom queues, on public transportation and waiting to fall asleep. Like the states induced by actual psychotropic substances, these instances all seem to coagulate into a singular, semi-lived experience. This compilation, through 10 idiosyncratic takes on modern club music, seeks paint a fittingly blurry picture of this psychotropic environment.

Wound Without A Tear is a compilation of “Australian” Ambient and Experimental Music; an area so often overlooked and misunderstood because it does not easily fall into historical context. However, the fifteen years (1993-2008) the collection cites–a period of early 90s post-rave ethereality defined by pleasure-centred spaces (chill-out rooms) and the personal computer’s emergence as a popular tool for file-sharing and secondary-living in the 00s–is befitting of closer examination.
The recordings were sourced from artists, labels, corrupted disk drives, CD-Rs, the WWW and archives of Melbourne’s 3RRR community radio station.
During the 1990s, as new technologies emerged and mass digital culture flourished, artists explored the emergent possibilities of the Internet with a utopian fervour, viewing the web and its plethora of images and information as a site of boundless potential. In the 2000s, file sharing connected people around the world directly to one another, and this incorporation of online experience into material objects, meant there was an increasingly porous border between the online and offline worlds–if there remained a border, at all.
What is remarkable from this collection is that so... many people, working (mostly) on their own came up with such remarkably similar ideas. In most cases these similarities can be related to the inherent qualities of the medium, though often any distinction is decidedly blurred at the edges. The compilation seeks to make the works of these various artists available as a means of “demystification”. No specific destination is intended upon. Perhaps by the time you have reached the end, you will have forgotten where you began.

杨明煌这个名字，也许让你听起来觉得蛮陌生的，但如果你能留意一些唱片的文案的话，就可能在不少唱片的制作人这一栏里找到杨明煌这个名字。作为台湾资深的音乐制作人，杨明煌参与了大量唱片的制作，比如我们非常熟悉的王菲、辛晓琪和范晓萱等著名歌手的代表作，都由他亲任制作。王菲的《天空》和《棋子》都是出自他的手笔。想不到吧？另外，那英的《白天不懂夜的黑》等专辑也是由他制作的。
杨明煌在1985年加入台湾歌林唱片公司，制作了生平第一张儿歌专辑，之后便开始真正的音乐唱片的制作。杨明煌不但弹得一手好吉他，音乐素养也极其出色，人品更是在圈内交口皆碑。最重要的是，作为一名优秀的制作人，他能最大限度地将与他合作的歌手的长处和个性发挥出来。
然而，也许是天妒英才，正当杨明煌处于事业黄金期的时候，却在1995年的一次交通意外中，永远离开了他的家人、朋友以及他所钟爱的音乐。在杨明煌去世后，他的很多好友为了纪念他特意制作了一张名为《一生的爱》的精选专辑，其中就有这首由当初杨明煌自弹自唱的母带加上众歌手的演唱制作而成的《用尽一生的爱》。

IS#2 (Indie Soundcheck Project No.2)，這張精彩絕倫的創作合輯，預計在8/25問世。繼承IS#1極度費工、憚精竭慮的設計包裝，IS#2這次仍將以一本迷你精裝書的形式呈現，外包書衣。不過這次的設計是全黑風格，書衣燙黑，內頁仍有風雲紙和描圖紙，歌詞部份用「開門摺」方式裝訂，前後頁面用滿版特別色印刷，恐怕再度創下了台灣音樂專輯印製的費工紀錄。
當然，IS#2並不會因為物料成本的昂貴而哄抬價格，這麼一張令人愛不釋手的專輯，售價是多少？沒錯－－照舊是新台幣238元。是的，不是438，不是338，只要238。
而這系列合輯的銷售盈餘，將會存入「鼓勵獨立音樂創作」的公益帳戶，讓創作歌曲的火焰，可以繼續燃燒下去。

◎ 黃韻玲的"Arthur"，這首所有工作人員第一次聽到demo都感動得掉眼淚的歌，是小玲繼1994年「黃韻玲的黃韻玲」專輯出版後，10年來首度發表的個人演唱作品。只要聽聽這首歌，你就知道，小玲那令人動容的才華，一絲一毫都沒有在歲月的淘洗中失落，反倒愈發洗鍊了。
◎ IS#2無意間讓「黑名單工作室」以間接的方式重新聚首了︰林暐哲、李欣芸、葉樹茵都在這張專輯裡獻出自己的歌，其中葉樹茵的"Answer Me"正是由黑名單工作室的「首腦」王明輝擔任製作人。當年掀起「新臺語搖滾」狂潮的另一位大將林強，新作「我想和你一起」則收錄在IS#1專輯中。
◎ 林暐哲的「夢想」是他在1992年Baboo樂團發表「新台幣」專輯以來，首度錄製的個人演唱作品，中間足足相隔12年。這中間，林暐哲投身音樂製作與詞曲創作，成為十年來台灣最成功的製作人之一，然而那個滿腔熱血的音樂青年一直都沒有離開我們，對IS計劃的全力支持、積極發掘新生代樂團蘇打綠、夢露，透過獨立通路販售DIY單曲等等，都是例證。
◎ 李欣芸在Baboo樂團解散之後赴美深造，1998年返台投入製作編曲的幕後工作，極為成功。「吃早餐」是她首度以獨立創作者身分發表的演唱作品。欣芸的首張個人專輯已經錄製完成，近期將會正式問世。
◎ 巴奈的「並沒有」由她自己彈吉他演唱，這首歌是2001年台權會合輯「美麗之島．人之島」裡翻唱「美麗島」以來，巴奈首度發表的歌曲，也是2000年「泥娃娃」專輯之後，四年來發表的第一首錄音室原創作品。
◎ 馬大文和DJ Heal都是首度發表錄音室作品，大文這幾年經常演出，作品也在網路上流傳頗廣，網友對她的作品比較熟悉，但「在我前面的那個人」經過陳珊妮製作、嗦吱編曲之後，大文的作品有了全新的音樂風格，連她自己都驚喜不置。DJ Heal是生平第一次發表作品，他的真實身分是錄音室裡的專業工作者，在陳珊妮大力鼓吹、並且答應替他錄演唱部份之後，他交出了"Baby, I'll Heal You"這首霧氣氤氳的Ambient作品，作為IS#2的壓軸作。
啊，是的，我們正在寫歷史，同時也在聆聽歷史的發生。你儘可忘記上面這些有的沒的，單純享受這張專輯裡的美好音樂。但我們都很清楚，IS#2除了八首不得了的好歌，它承載的動人故事，其實還有更多更多。
【IS Project：奇蹟式的「零圓計劃」】
IS Project（Indie Soundcheck Project）是一個廣邀創作人才參加的公益企劃，所有參加的音樂人均不領取個人酬勞，專輯銷售盈餘將會存入鼓勵獨立音樂創作的專款帳戶。
我們的初衷很簡單：能不能讓創作人拋開主流唱片公司企畫方向和市場因素的壓力，盡情做出自己最最想做的音樂？能不能拋開華而不實的企宣套式，讓一切回歸音樂本質，讓作品自己說話？
2004年夏天，我們完成了足足十六首歌，從創作、編曲、製作，到錄音、混音、母帶後期處理......這一切工作的總支出，是奇蹟式的「零元」。而且，這些作品也足以傲視市面上絕大多數花了大錢的產品－－耳聽為憑，相信你會同意的。

【企劃統籌的話】／馬世芳
這張專輯真的做出來了。回頭想想，整件事情簡直像一場夢。
「IS計畫」的緣起，可以回溯到兩年前陳珊妮和我的一場閒聊。在華語唱片工業一路崩潰、音樂內容愈來愈不被尊重的時節，我們提起一些心目中頂尖音樂人的名字，非常希望能聽到他們「撒開來寫」的作品。聊著聊著，漸漸就有了「邀請大家寫歌，一起做個合輯」的想法。
我們的初衷很簡單：能不能讓創作人拋開主流唱片公司企畫方向和市場因素的壓力，盡情做出自己最最想做的音樂？能不能拋開華而不實的企宣套式，讓一切回歸音樂本質，讓作品自己說話？
說到做到，我們興奮地開始列舉可能邀請的創作人名單，並且幾經討論，擬出以下的共識：
－－ 不設主題限制，任何內容、任何風格的音樂作品都可以接受。
－－ 不問輩分高低、大牌小牌，只要作品夠好，一律歡迎。不僅希望資深的創作人能盡情施展，也希望發掘有潛力的新秀。
－－ 由陳珊妮擔任製作統籌，負責音樂內容的品管；由我擔任企劃統籌，負責生管、行政、通路諸般雜事。在毫無經費奧援的前提下，儘量尋求「資源分享」的管道。創作人若是無法獨力完成所有工作，珊妮會盡可能協助尋找錄音、編曲、配唱、演奏、製作各方面的支援。
－－ 基於互助、分享的原則，專輯販售盈餘，無論是多是少，將會另外存入「鼓勵獨立音樂創作」的公益專款帳戶。專款使用方式必須經過全體創作者同意，所有參與「IS計畫」的個人都不領酬勞。
－－ 這是一個持續的計畫，將會不斷邀請各方人才加入、不斷推出新的作品。
看看我們的創作人陣容、再看看製作和企劃的複雜程度，這個計畫註定不可能被主流公司接受，也完全不可能用唱片工業既有的製作、企劃模式來處理。唯有音樂人彼此支援、分攤勞務，才能一舉而竟全功。我們首先跟林暐哲解釋這套構想，彼此的理念一拍即合，他慷慨開放自己的錄音室讓大家自由使用，「IS計畫」遂有了錄音製作的「基地」。
接下來，我和珊妮分頭聯繫創作人，幾乎每個人都不假思索、一口答應。透過他們的引介，我們又陸續連絡到更多願意「入幫」的人才。時間慢慢過去，我們手邊收集到的作品也愈來愈多，每首新歌的demo，都是一樁撞擊靈魂的狂喜經驗。此外，無論編曲、錄音、演奏、混音、母帶後期處理、乃至於專輯裝幀設計，我們都獲得了頂尖人才的奧援。大家不問酬勞、義務相助，心裡想的是同一件事－－讓一切「回歸音樂的本質」，替獨立音樂找到新的道路。
說真的，我們當初沒敢想像事情竟會這麼順利。這樁夢幻計畫，竟然一步一步成真了。2004年夏天，我們完成了足足十六首歌，從創作、編曲、製作，到錄音、混音、母帶後期處理......這一切工作的總支出，是奇蹟式的「零圓」。也就是說，除了壓片包裝印刷的必要開銷，這個計畫真的創下了不可思議的「零元完工」紀錄。而且，這些作品也足以傲視市面上絕大多數花了大錢的產品－－耳聽為憑，相信你會同意的。

這不是一張展開雙臂，大叫歡迎的作品。相反的，它很沉重陰鬱曖昧。還有那麼一點拒人於外的味道。這群人，在極欲破繭而出的狂吼張力中，滿溢出一種豐盈剔透的平衡美感。因此，你還有一點空間去幻想。那麼，你就不會相信「年輕與理想」只是一種扛不住的負擔。
《 完全走調 》這張合輯收錄的是「水晶唱片」於1989年舉辦的「第三屆台灣新音樂節」的參選作品，收錄有「吳俊霖(伍佰)」、「葉樹茵」、「史辰蘭」、「周志華」、「青銅時代」、「毛元豪」、「幻弄影」、「藍洛李工作室」等..未成名前的作品，是水晶最早的合輯，也是水晶獨具慧眼的發行，有「葉樹茵」最稚嫩的出唱，「伍佰」最原始的藍調搖滾，以及「林暐哲」最早期的創作，當然還有其他現在在幕後舉足輕重的工作者，都是完全走調的創造群。「伍佰」就是從這次活動出道的，他自己用一套MIDI設備就把 " 小人國 " 一曲通通搞定，詞曲創作、編曲、演奏、錄音、演唱通通自己來。
聆賞這張專輯時不妨特別注意，幾乎每首歌都使用到大量MIDI和鍵盤樂器。進入90年代後，台北獨立樂團都以吉他為主，鍵盤和電子樂器反而難得聽到。

Saigon Supersound Continues... to present more interesting tunes of a musical era that has long been obscured. With the well - received Volume 1, we are very delighted to dig deeper and share with you the beautiful music of a short but significant period in Vietnam‘s history.
Much like the country itself, the music of Vietnam has endured many twists. As the result of the Geneva Accords in 1954, Vietnam was divided into two. From the North, the Nationalist forces fought to reunite Vietnam as a Communist State, while the American troops backed the government of the South. This caused a mass migration of Northerners to the South, which includes many Tân Nhạc (Modern Music) singers and songwriters. Often characterized by its emotive, poetic and prolific personality, Tân Nhạc continued to freely develop in the South and progressively vacating from the influences of its main inspiration, French music. In the North, the Resistance music, or the so-called Nhạc Đỏ (Red Music), which promoted socialism, patriotism and anti-capitalism was the only genre allowed on national radio. Tân Nhạc was something new to the South Vietnamese repertoire. Between 1954–1960, the theme of hometown (quê hương) was a main inspiration for many songwriters such as Hoàng Thi Thơ, Lam Phương and Nguyễ n Hữu Thiết. The 9th title of the compilation, “Thôn Trăng Mở Hội Trăng Tròn” showcases a variety of images that were often described in this genre: the harvest moon, playful children, old mother...
Every recording made in this era is then an organic combination of human experiences, communications and uniqueness. In 1965, the first American troop landed in Vietnam, bringing with them the musical influences of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley... The Vietnamese people quickly integrated it into the repertoire with hope to further diversify the music of Vietnam. Constantly changing and learning from different cultures, the modern music of Vietnam cuts a window into the soul of a Vietnamese person and the country’s history as a whole. With that, we hope that Saigon Supersound Volume 2 would take you on a trip back to the unique atmosphere of Saigon through the many different palettes of music that this beautiful place offers.
