这本《中国史学概要》根据方壮猷在武汉大学历史系讲授中国史学史之讲录简编而成,同时参考了孙秉莹(季明)、解毓才(冠三)诸生之听课笔记,成书于1943年。1944年邓广铭(恭三)作“序”并将其推荐给中国文化服务社的“青年文库”丛书,1947年在上海出版。邓序说,该书“以史体为经,时次为纬,条析绳贯,区为章节,各章后又附后人考校、注释、订补诸作。汇万殊于一编,驭繁碎于简要”。《中国史学概要》依史体分为纪传、编年、纪事本末、制度文物史、方志与家谱等七章,为治国史者提供了入门之津梁。有学者指出:“从中国历史文献学的角度探讨史学的起源和发展,此以方壮猷《中国史学概要》为代表”(《中国史研究动态》2001年第8期),认为此书是20世纪上半叶有代表性的中国史学史著作之一。
