Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.

2025年10月27日 评论 a review of - After two outings inexplicably devoid of any trace of humor despite their ridiculous concepts, this third chapter in the Twisted Childhood Universe actually manages to justify being so freaking grimdark with its subject matter. Anything dealing with the abduction of children in this manner should absolutely be this creepy and uncomfortable to watch. The overall tone mixed with a few moments of genuinely shocking depravity and some of the most brutal violence this side of the Terrifier  franchise makes for some surprisingly solid horror. Altogether creating the first installment in this baffling and still unfolding cinematic universe that I legitimately kind of like.  It won’t work for everyone. Like its predecessors, many will find this to be little more than “edginess” for the sake of “edginess” thanks to it continuing the unrelenting bleakness and nastiness of its predecessors. You can also clearly see the areas where it’s outright borrowing from bigger genre hits such as Andy Muschietti’s  IT  movies, among others. If they were going to ape anything though, at least they’re aping the best where it counts and while not skipping out on including their own original bits to give the project an identity of its own. Plus, the whole thing is executed FAR better than the two Blood and Honey  flicks prior (the acting is unexpectedly quite good). Establishing that Scott Chambers is currently the best thing to happen to this growing collection of gruesome reimaginings of beloved children’s properties that have hit the public domain, outside of this entry itself, and for more than just his role as Christopher Robin in the film’s 2024 sibling. I’m honestly a little impressed here.

2025年10月16日 评论 a review of - Silent Hill  for canines. Is the house really haunted or is this all just the dog’s way of processing the trauma of what’s happening to his owner? Yeah, the entire hook here really is only “horror flick, but the pup is the lead.” They are able to get a surprising amount of mileage out of the concept though. I wouldn’t exactly call this scary (more creepy than anything), yet there are a handful of good thrills and a little bit of emotion to carry you through. I especially loved the short segment after the credits where the director discusses how they were able to pull the whole thing off. If you’re at all curious about that then grab a ticket, because it sounds like something you won’t get to see unless you go to the theater.  Overall, I would recommend this to those intrigued by the premise as it’s very well executed. Not one of the next greats of the genre by any means, but a solid matinee trip to the cinema nonetheless.

2024年10月4日 评论 a review of 撒冷镇 - After a few years of remaining in the sort of awkward limbo with its fate up in the air and the only real updates we ever received being the news of another delay, WB finally deciding to rather quietly release this directly to their Max streaming service doesn’t exactly speak highly of its quality. Yet, while it’s easy to see why they would opt to go this route as opposed to risking what would have likely been failure at the box office, I’m pleasantly surprised to say that 2024’s spin on the vampiric Stephen King classic is far more entertaining than it has any right to be. Just don’t go into it looking for a great, deep adaptation of the novel’s story. Gary Dauberman brings the same kind of goofy haunted house attraction style thrills seen in his directorial debut Annabelle Comes Home. None of its scare attempts are actually frightening, but are fun to shout and howl at the screen with alongside the hammier elements such as the jokes and Pilou Asbæk’s ridiculous performance that’s totally played for chuckles. The plot meanwhile is largely underdeveloped, hitting only general outline of the tale found in its source material. The villains go unexplored, entire side-characters/subplots are missing, and the backstories and motivations of the protagonists were clearly left on the cutting room floor. Even the entire aspect of a small American town being rendered desolate by an unholy force doesn’t hit like it should have due to the runtime rushing through everything to reach the next big set piece.  This will lead to a very hollow viewing experience for those who were hoping for a modern update that would’ve done the book’s narrative true justice or simply demand more from their cinema overall. If you’re merely looking for a solid bit of schlock horror this Spooktober though, this will certainly deliver the amusement you’re looking for in spades. It holds up well as a fun throwaway watch for the season that also provides some shockingly pleasant visuals in the form of smoky environments, glowing-eyed bloodsuckers, and the occasional colorful backdrop. Sometimes that’s all you need when you’re in or are trying to get into the Halloween spirit.

Every one without him is… Poorly acted, filled with awkward supporting characters, occasionally pushing an underdeveloped romance between actors completely devoid of chemistry, and strung together by a somewhat dull “mystery.” When it’s adrenaline is pumping and the blows are being traded though it’s a blast. The Borne Identity  director knows a good action scene, and hey the whole thing is sporadically funny. Don’t know how this compares to the original, but it did get me interested in checking it out to see. So all in all I’d say this is a good time. Oh, and can we get McGregor in more movies please? 2023年5月22日 评论 a review of X战警:黑凤凰 - Underrated? Not exactly, but this was far more entertaining than I was led to believe going into it. Don't get me wrong, I understand why people hate this. It’s ANOTHER messy telling of “ The Dark Phoenix Saga ” storyline this time plagued by reshoots, rewrites, and cut footage all thanks to Fox being acquired by the Disney dark lords, and flat acting from everybody not named Michael Fassbender that fails to deliver the needed emotion. It’s not a “good” movie in any conventional sense of the word, but I enjoyed it regardless. That’s because it captures the whole team dynamic better than the majority of the rest of the films in the franchise. I’ll maintain in the face of any opposition that, as fantastic as that first entry is, Apocalypse is what we originally should have gotten back in 2000 instead because it gave everyone involved more of a chance to shine rather than simply devolving into the Wolverine show, and if we had we would still be singing its praises to this very day. Dark Phoenix ’s continuation of this quality can be seen the most in its action sequences. They’re not terribly exciting and are held back by some lackluster SFX, but showcase each hero’s abilities in ways that make them feel instrumental to victory in the battles. Which is good because they have one heck of an interesting foe to overcome. On top of Jean’s resurfacing trauma and newfound power boost causing her to act a little haywire, the X-Men must also contend with an alien invasion of sorts. It’s a nice change of pace from the typical supervillain archetype and succeeds where its peers who have tried something similar have failed by making the extraterrestrial menace truly creepy, weird, and fascinating. I wish we had gotten to learn more about them. They pair well with the title heroine’s internal struggle and exploration of Charles Xavier as anything other than a consummate leader to create a plot I was surprisingly invested in, even if it is hit at points with some horrendous dialogue. aNd By ThE wAy ThE wOmEn ArE aLwAyS sAvInG tHe MeN aRoUnD hErE. yOu MiGhT wAnNa ThInK aBoUt ChAnGiNg ThE nAmE tO x-WoMeN. The one female character who doesn’t do anything other than stir the pot. Despite ultimately coming off as half-baked, I would have loved it if they would have continued down this path. While even more flawed than Apocalypse (which was really just hurt by superhero fatigue and arriving about 16 years too late more than anything), it’s still a glimpse into the kind of X-Men flick I and many others have always dreamed of. The light Evolution vibes are a delight, for example. It’s a shame this younger incarnation of the mutants never got the outing they deserved and that their last hurrah is largely a disaster. If you read up on the troubled production you’ll find a quite a bit of studio interference behind the scenes led to a lot of promising content by removed such as the Hellfire Club, the Shi’ar, and an altogether larger element of the cosmic. Once again, a case of Fox making poor decisions that hurt the final product. All that being said, I nonetheless had a better time with this than I was expecting too. Unfortunately, the only ones likely to count themselves among me as a fan are going to be the most forgiving comic book devotees.

2023年5月9日 评论 a review of - I’m not exactly Chonda Pierce’s target audience by any means, but the comedian’s stand-up material had a pretty big presence in my childhood regardless. Her clean brand of humor and willingness to openly discuss struggles faced in her everyday life through a lens of faith made her a huge hit with Christian mothers back in the day, and growing up my own mom would regularly replay her CDs in the car on long trips. The woman is a holdover from that era when comics could get famous by being relatable and actually funny, as opposed to simply amassing a lot attention on Twitter through drama involving politics or whatever. It’s what allowed talents of her ilk to build loyal, lifelong followings while most of the names you’ll see featured in brief, 5-minute sets on Comedy Central or something largely never end up going anywhere. That down-to-earth, everywoman vibe she always brings to the stage carries over to this charming little southern-fried flick too. The story and much of the humor is just about a small-town waitress in her 50s trying to save her house whilst also contending with other natural life issues, and the packed theater I was in was primarily full of women around that same age range. No doubt those blue hairs in attendance found just as much to get emotionally invested with as they did to laugh at, as based on a conversation I had with one of Pierce’s more hardcore fans after the showing, the events that transpire here may have been inspired by some the star’s personal experiences. Which are situations much of the audience had likely been in themselves. No new ground is broke in the film’s exploration of things such as feeling left behind by the world’s constant advancement as it strives to keep up with the next generation or its surprisingly realistic portrayal of the woes of online dating, causing you to see a lot of the plot beats and even jokes coming from a mile away, but I still found myself thoroughly amused nonetheless. Overall, this won’t be winning any awards, yet is warm and cozy in a way we honestly don’t receive much anymore. It’s the kind of comfort food watch I was hoping to get from Adam Sandler this year, but he ultimately ended up missing the mark on with the underwhelming Murder Mystery   2 . I went into this expecting another flat religious movie I wouldn’t be able to recommend and walked away pleasantly surprised that I instead couldn’t really classify this as a piece of Christian cinema at all. On top of being better acted and produced than anything Pure Flix has ever put out, there’s only the occasional passing reference to stuff like prayer at best and it’s done in a matter-of-fact, “this is who I am” sort of way completely devoid of any preaching or message that would make it less appealing to the secular or agnostic crowds. Resulting in the most fun I’ve had at the theater in what feels like quite some time.

2022年9月18日 评论 a review of 卢佩夫人 - A short little Spanish crime-thriller from legendary Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. One of only two short films he's ever let be released to the public. It's kind of amazing to me that this doesn't have as positive a buzz as his later effort, the one joke horror-comedy Geometría . Doña Lupe is far more impressive content-wise, especially when you consider how he was only 19 when he made it! It's got a basic, but solid plot about a financially broke old widow woman facing off against two crooked cops taking advantage of her, and despite the shoestring budget actually manages to have some visual flair. There's even a decent action shoot-out featuring the kind of blood and gore that would be one of the defining aspects of its director's career years later. It's not essential by any means, but hardcore cinephiles can get a kick out of seeing what the earliest work available from a Best Picture Academy Award winner was like, and walk away pretty impressed with its quality to boot.

2022年4月16日 评论 a review of 旺达幻视 - An interesting experiment. Essentially a MCU miniseries of two parts. The first of which acts as a homage to classic old sitcoms. Unfortunately, it’s retro throwbacks aren’t very good. I don’t think I laughed even once until the 6th episode, which embraced the more rambunctious comedy of early 2000s hits like Malcolm in the Middle . What ultimately kept me watching despite that was the underlying mystery of the whole thing. The blatantly bizarre premise for a superhero show will naturally have you asking “what the heck iiiiiiiissss this crap?” Something the show plays off of well by offering subtle clues that nothing is what it seems to keep you interested during these duller segments. The closer this draws to a close the more it begins to resemble a traditional MCU flick, with the same quality of action and visuals you would expect to see on theater screens. It even fleshes out Wanda Maximoff in some compelling ways that finally make her as developed as the other heroes she has been standing alongside for years now. The problem is with the two title Avengers being trapped in such a bizarre scenario, the storytelling in this half is primarily centered around characters portrayed by Kat Dennings, Randall Park, Teyonah Paris, and Josh Stamberg. All of whom are supremely annoying. Particularly Dennings who I honestly wanted to reach into my TV and strangle. So while this portion is a bit more exciting, it’s still not very fulfilling and further exemplifies how WandaVision ’s biggest fault is that it’s just kind of boring overall. Especially since you can predict quite a few elements of its plot fairly easily. This isn’t entirely skippable however. The events here will have a significant impact on and tie directly into upcoming projects such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . It’s also nice to see Disney and Marvel do something truly new and original with their cinematic universe for the first time since The Avengers . So for the hardcore devotees and followers of this sprawling, multimedia continuity, this is worth watching and may even be essential viewing. For the less invested who simply tune in on these properties for a good time, this might not be for you as the entertainment value varies wildly.

2021年12月17日 评论 a review of 毒液2 - More of the same, but also strangely an improvement. Unconcerned with introducing us to its flawed take on the character, this sequel can instead fully embrace itself for what it is. That means the issues haven't changed. This is still too lighthearted and silly to really fit the titular anti-hero as we know him from the comics, the action is somewhat underwhelming, you'll be wishing to see blood the PG-13 rating won't allow for, and I continue to have no idea why Brock loves Anne who comes off as more of a cold-hearted psychopath than the symbiotic parasite going around taking over people's bodies. However, now it's free to fully roll with the madness allowing for a variety of wackadoodle scenarios that would feel out of place in any movie, much less a superhero one, and it's far more entertaining as a result. A big driving point behind the hype for Let There Be Carnage , outside of its predecessor somehow actually having fans, was that we're finally getting to see the long-awaited cinematic debut of another one of Spider-Man's most memorable antagonists. Unfortunately the results on that front are kind of a mixed bag. Woody Harrelson's performance is fantastic and they definitely nailed the visual component. The red symbiote's appearance is less alien goo, and more mass of sentient flesh. This makes the transformation sequences where it looks like Cletus Kasady's body is literally transforming into a hideous monster particularly gross and striking. The script doesn't respect the supervillain as much as Andy Serkis does though, so he gets the same disposable treatment a considerably less popular Marvel foe would get which is incredibly disappointing. It feels as if the writers didn't take the time to give the conflict the significance it should have had in an effort to rush out the surprise ending that sees the merging of two worlds that never should have been separate in first place before the biggest MCU flick of the year came out. At least it's fun. It's still not the Venom film we deserve, but my acceptance of that beforehand allowed me to get some enjoyment from it. Trashy in the way a lot of the cape and costume features of the 2000s were before Iron Man kicked off bringing them all together under one roof, I can't say this is truly "good." Just that it's come into its own enough to be accepted for what it is, even if simply to watch that mid-credits stinger which opens up the future to some exciting possibilities moving forward. Meaning that if the upcoming Morbius delivers at all, Sony might have started to get a grip on its standalone bad guy universe despite its rough start and inherently confused concept.

2021年11月11日 评论 a review of 摄影机不要停! - Makes creative use of its meta film-within-a-film premise. It starts off on an amusing enough note as the crew of a low-budget production are attacked by the very same monsters found in their script and are thrust into danger by their unhinged director. It's not bad, but the zombie action is kind of weak and there are a lot of odd moments that don't make sense until much later on in the running-time. So it's not until the second portion when the curtain is pulled back on a huge unexpected twist and it completely changes its entire game (while still remaining true to the mise en abyme concept), essentially giving us two movies in one, that I began to understand why this has received so much praise. As weird as it feels to say, things are better off without the undead. After One Cut goes in a wholly different direction we get a much funnier tale that can be surprisingly heartwarming. What we just saw beforehand is not simply abandoned however. Rather, it's built on, enriched, and made deeper. A lot of its more questionable aspects you will have noticed are explained, adding a lot of value to a rewatch of that first segment. In the end there aren't two disparate halves here, but rather a pair of distinctive, yet similar pieces that need each other to work. Enjoyable as it all may be though, most of the hype is coming from its novelty more so than the actual content which is merely solid. There are some good jokes, but it's never a laugh riot and while I do think it's sweet with a good heart I wasn't invested in the characters. At the same time, I haven't seen anything that's executed its ideas quite like this has and in an era where originality is harder than it should be to come by that makes the experience quite refreshing, so I understand why there are so many overstatements about its quality. Particularly given its charming attitude. This is probably the cutest thing on Shudder after all.

2021年10月29日 评论 a review of 狂魔雷克斯 - Being based on a Clive Barker short story of the same name you can see the skeletal framework of a plot that could have elevated this movie to a higher standing. The characters appear to have legitimate things going on for them, even if I never understood why the protagonist was poking around a church in Ireland, and the titular monster shows the signs of an interesting, highly detailed supporting backstory that's based on actual folklore. There's an unfortunate dearth of meat on those bones though as the film never embraces its storytelling potential, causing the time spent following our leads around to drag down the pacing in the first half and leaving the pagan entity at the heart of all this feeling a little empty between the ears. Ultimately limiting the reputation of this adaptation to that of a rather middling creature feature at best. Still, it's got the gory kills and a lot of work clearly went into bringing ol' "Rawhead" to life, even if he does look a bit too much like a supersized version of a child's plastic action figure standing there at times. Plus, on top of the cheap thrills it offers (which include nudity and a particularly bizarre urination gag), when was the last time you saw an Irish horror flick or really any cinema from that country at all? None of this makes up for the writing deficiencies that will have you seeking answers behind the religiously inspired elements, particularly when it comes to whatever was going on with how they defeat the brute, but they do allow for some B-movie style fun to be found regardless which makes it worth watching for those who are into that kind of content. Yet, even as someone who is, I too have been left desiring a remake with a more developed script that fully dives into the possible subtext of the material and delivers on the concept's true promise.

2021年10月19日 评论 a review of - The thing that has made Mike Flanagan stand out in the modern age of horror has been his understanding of the importance of strong character work in the genre. On top of coming up with uniquely unsettling concepts and petrifying scenarios, he has always ensured the people in his stories are just as compelling as the supernatural terrors they face. It's an aspect of his style that he's been able to explore to the fullest extent ever since he's made the move from feature-lengths to miniseries. More so than anything he's made prior this is a human drama that just so happens to have a monster in it. The majority of the "action" consists of watching the inhabitants of the small island fishing town struggle with things like guilt, regret, redemption, religious faith, death and so much else. Usually through lengthy conversations. Flanagan portrays all of this with his usual sense of empathy. He genuinely seems to get why humanity is this way and doesn't appear to hold it against anybody, despite having no trouble depicting and serving justice to the most heinous of those among us. Despite the narrative being centered around a Catholic church, he never condemns religion as an inherently bad thing like so many others would. He never condemns anyone or anything at all. Rather he simply critiques how religion can be misused to justify abhorrent behavior. The overall message being to look past the race, beliefs, or creeds of others. Midnight Mass isn't telling you to agree with everybody as it realizes that's impossible. Rather it's asking you to accept that there are those with different beliefs and lifestyles, not judge, and continue going about your own life. A moral I can get behind 100%. Now let me tell you why I think this is one of the weakest efforts of Flanagan's career thus far... No, not because it isn't scary. Few though they may be, these are some of the most effective frights tactics he's come up with to date. The first problem I have is evident from the very start. The whole thing looks really cheap to the point where I was regularly taken out of the experience by the obvious green screens and lackluster CGI. It becomes clear that the bulk of the SFX budget went into the absolute parade of blood and fire that is the finale, which explains why it's so rough visually early on. However, you mean to tell me Netflix could give upwards of $90 million to David Ayer and Michael Bay, but couldn't slip a few extra bucks to the guy who gave them The Haunting of Hill House which is likely STILL the best content the streaming service has to offer? Unreal. My other issues stem from the writing. Characters have a tendency to talk in really unnatural ways. Like how at one point a teenage boy uses the phrase "good and truly" as if he's from the 1600s or something. It's bizarre. The biggest and most egregious fault of all though is the ginormous plot hole resting at the center of the script. I can't go into details for fear of incredibly significant spoilers, but suffice to say it very easily ruins any sense of believability. Between this and The Haunting of Bly Manor (which he admittedly had a less hands-on role in), I'm ready for Flanagan to return to movies where a smaller running-time forces him to deliver tighter, more focused narratives while leaving a smaller amount of room for these kind of mistakes to creep in. Especially since his last two films were the outstanding Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep . This is still solid enough for me to recommend it to you based on the strength of its well-realized characters, their dynamics, and the internal dilemmas they face. As well as for the creative twists it puts on one of the oldest creatures of the night ever to grace the screen. Just know that it is flawed in a way we're not used to from him.

2021年7月9日 评论 a review of - A remake of Joe Dante's 1978 film for the Showtime network. With the exception of some added nudity it follows the original to a tee, even reusing some of its footage at points. So you're basically just watching the same movie with different actors and made-for-TV special effects. This kind of raises the question of why does this exist at all if they weren't going to put their own unique spin on things? Because without anything new having been brought to the table this is a rather pointless feeling retread. Yet, it's not a lesser version. The original Piranha was a decent little Jaws rip-off and that hasn't changed here. The new cast is solid and the gore actually looks a bit gnarlier in my opinion. The only complaints I have are the exact same ones I had the first time around. Namely never getting a chance to get a good look at the titular fishies and there not being enough blood or mauled body parts for my liking. So it's not like this is some Cabin Fever 2016 style debasing or anything. In fact, if you've never seen Piranha before this is a perfectly viable way to do so. It just doesn't offer anything for those who have already experienced the cult classic, as this is nearly identical to it in every way. They're better off checking out Alexandre Aja's modernized " 3D " instead. So while this may be a complete rehash, the fact that it does nothing to diminish what was already a good movie to begin with means I can't really find any fault with it.

2021年6月29日 评论 a review of 华氏451 - Tried to capitalize on the last wave of the YA dystopian craze by updating a piece of classic literature for the Hunger Games crowd. Yes, some of the depth and nuance was lost in the process, but this isn't an entirely brainless adaptation. That's because the source material's themes are still relevant to this day and even in this altered form paints a picture of a future that feels like all too real a possibility. Following a second civil war the government decides that the best way to keep America from tearing itself apart with infighting (while giving themselves greater control over the populace) is to destroy any means of artistic expression that could create differing viewpoints and therefore conflict. Primarily books in this case. In a time where cancel culture is running rampant and nobody can handle someone else having a different opinion than them, it's not hard to see how this level of censorship could come about. What's really scary though is that it almost seems like a preferable alternative to the point where you can somewhat understand why the society portrayed here would be so willing to accept it. I mean, wouldn't you like to live in a world where you didn't have to worry about another racially, politically, or religiously charged riot or other act of violence (or Twitter feud) taking place? Of course, books and other types of media aren't the problem here. It's people's inability to accept or at the very least ignore the beliefs and lifestyles of others they don't agree with. This is something the movie never really addresses. It certainly shows how we should celebrate and protect our texts through the heroes' efforts to preserve them, but it doesn't cover why they aren't at fault for how the country ended up in that state. Essentially failing to dive into the real meat of the matter. In an effort to spice up this now decades old story, Ramin Bahrani and Amir Naderi did things like cast attractive young actors in the lead roles, made Montag and Clarisse lovers, and took the setting further into the future to incorporate modern technology such as the internet. All of which do a good job of making an entertaining experience out of a novel that's not very exciting in the traditional sense, even if there are still a few dull stretches. That doesn't quite make up for how hollow the script can be though. For example Guy's desire to go from burning books to reading them comes completely out of nowhere and the romance aspect is based more on a physical attraction between the two characters as opposed to an emotional connection because one is never developed. The groundwork was clearly in place for both of these to have played out in a more satisfying manner. I don't know if constraints with the budget or running-time got in the way, but whatever the case some things aren't as fulfilling as they otherwise could have been. Coming off like a made-for-TV version of Divergent the whole thing may feel kind of pandering, and that's because it totally is. Yet, it's pandering in an attempt to reach an audience that typically wouldn't give the work of Ray Bradbury a second look. So despite all its flaws if this new take has a better chance of passing on his still important message to a wider group of people then even in this watered-down state I'm here for it.

2021年5月15日 评论 a review of 神奇女侠1984 - In a time where our superhero movies and honestly big blockbusters in general are following a very safe, predictable (but not unenjoyable) formula, it's nice to see one that tries to do something different even if the results are somewhat mixed. WW84 forgoes much of the typical action and comedy in favor of patiently progressing through a story designed to instill a moral in order to ensure that its message is more effectively delivered. This does lead to some rather humdrum pacing and a few dull stretches, but the way it actively tries to teach the audience something sort of exemplifies what makes Princess Diana so special to begin with by reaffirming her as someone we can all look up to. Hearkening back to the days when comic book heroes were people we could aspire to be like not solely for their powers and incredible adventures, but for the strength of their character as well. Slow though it may be, there is still some spectacle to be found here. It's just of a more toned down variety that calls to mind the whimsical escapist thrills of the Golden and Silver ages of comics, rather than the bombastic and elaborate setpieces we've become accustomed to today. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't help that the majority of the running-time is also dedicated to fleshing out the cast through their detailed interactions with one another. It certainly makes for a cute little adventure with the most well-realized and developed villains in any cinematic universe to date, but my goodness is there a noticeable lack of excitement most of the time that can make it hard to stay fully engaged given its length. Despite its lack of zest however, I remain a fan of 1984 for its throwback to the cape-and-costume tales of yesteryear nature and the titular character herself. Portrayed with such grace and charm by Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman is the beacon of hope and goodness that Superman and Captain America were supposed to be on the big-screen. Even her shiny and brightly colored new suit radiates a quality of awe-inspiring heroism that she proves isn't just skin-deep by going the extra mile and not only sparing, but REDEEMING her foes when all her counterparts in the DCEU and MCU are busy making sure every enemy they come across has no chance of returning for a sequel. It's these qualities along with the fact that what was attempted here wasn't even a bad idea that allow me to stand beside her during this one minor misstep. This really was a well-meaning attempt to shake things up for superheroes by returning to the tone and principles found in their inception while offering a life lession in the process. A concept I would love to see revisited with more life and energy in the future, because while this love letter to the character's roots may be lacking in the expected and sometimes even the necessary amount of entertainment value, it was refreshing to see one of these films finally break away from the mold to try something different. So when all is said and done, Wonder Woman is still my girl!
