In the Sengoku period, a woman and her daughter are raped and murdered by soldiers during a time of civil war. Afterwards, a series of samurai returning from the war through that area are found mysteriously dead with their throats torn out. The governor calls in a wild and fierce young hero to quell what is evidently an Onryō ghost. He encounters the two beautiful women in an eerie, beautiful scene. After spiritual purification, he meets the demon in a thrilling fight.

What a beautifully tragic, haunting, thrilling and dreamy movie. Incredible imagery, framing, lighting... UGH! So good.
And shocked was I to tear up at such a tender scene in the middle of this revenge tale.
This was exactly what I was in the mood for and was an instant 5 from me when it ended.

To get to the really great last 10 minutes, one must endure the 79 minutes that came before. There are a few cool moments sprinkled throughout, but it's a bit of a slog and a bit of a mess.
Me saying it's like bad *Suspiria* with bedevilled nuns instead of bewitched dance instructors makes it sound a lot better than it is, because this...is not that good.

I started at a 3, but worked up to a 3.5 after sleeping on it, and having given myself a few days, I might even be closer to a 4.
Regardless, Daliah Lavi gives a delightfully devilish performance that really keeps the whole thing afloat.
Sticking with a 3.5 for now, but we'll see what happens on a rewatch in the future.
