Across much of the postcolonial world, Christianity has often become inseparable from ideas and practices linking the concept of modernity to that of human emancipation. Tolerance is generally regarded as an unqualified achievement of the modern West. Emerging in early modern Europe to defuse violent religious conflict and reduce persecution, tolerance today is hailed as a key to decreasing conflict across a wide range of other dividing lines - cultural, racial, ethnic, and sexual. But, as political theorist Wendy Brown argues in "Regulating Aversion", tolerance also has dark and troubling undercurrents. Dislike, disapproval, and regulation lurk at the heart of tolerance. To tolerate is not to affirm but to conditionally allow what is unwanted or deviant. And, although presented as an alternative to violence, tolerance can play a part in justifying violence - dramatically so in the war in Iraq and the War on Terror. Wielded, especially since 9/11, as a way of distinguishing a civilized West from a barbaric Islam, tolerance is paradoxically underwriting Western imperialism. Brown's analysis of the history and contemporary life of tolerance reveals it in a startlingly unfamiliar guise. Heavy with norms and consolidating the dominance of the powerful, tolerance sustains the abjection of the tolerated and equates the intolerant with the barbaric. 沒有犧牲者的社會的可能性

本書是以犧牲的體系這個框架來討論福島與沖繩。作者一邊對照著日本的近現代史，一邊從受益者與負擔者間的權力關係來解讀這兩個事例，以尋找打造沒有犧牲者的社會的可能性。正如同本書作者及其他論者所指出的，福島事件在許多方面都很類似之前的第二次世界大戰。本書引用了河上肇的「日本獨特的國家主義」，以及雅斯培的「問罪於戰爭」作了最佳論述。只是不論怎麼說，構想打造出沒有犧牲者的社會，都是最困難的難題。在書的最後，也以「我們必須以此為目標」作結。雖然我與作者在思考上的立場有些不同，但至少我們同樣都想站在犧牲者那方。
這場震災是天罰嗎？

這本書，讓我特別有興趣的部分就是圍繞在震災上的「天罰論」與「天惠論」。比起前東京都知事石原等政治人物的發言，我對宗教界人士及知識分子的發言更抱持著疑問。尤其是對專門研究佛教學、佛教史學的末木文美士先生所提出的「天罰論」感到非常疑惑。在關東大地震時內村鑑三先生發表了〈天災、天罰與天惠〉這篇文章，用他的思想來檢證上述的問題，便能清楚看見潛藏在「天罰論」、「天惠論」之中的「犧牲的理論」。我認為，這就是這本書的精義所在。

Like many people in America and around the world, Talal Asad experienced the events of September 11, 2001, largely through the media and the emotional response of others. For many non-Muslims, "the suicide bomber" quickly became the icon of "an Islamic culture of death"& mdash;a conceptual leap that struck Asad as problematic. Is there a "religiously-motivated terrorism?" If so, how does it differ from other cruelties? What makes its motivation "religious"? Where does it stand in relation to other forms of collective violence?Drawing on his extensive scholarship in the study of secular and religious traditions as well as his understanding of social, political, and anthropological theory and research, Asad questions Western assumptions regarding death and killing. This classic work in subaltern studies explores the common elements present in rebel consciousness during the Indian colonial period. Ranajit Guha—intellectual founder of the groundbreaking and influential Subaltern Studies Group—describes from the peasants’ viewpoint the relations of dominance and subordination in rural India from 1783 to 1900.
Challenging the idea that peasants were powerless agents who rebelled blindly against British imperialist oppression and local landlord exploitation, Guha emphasizes their awareness and will to effect political change. He suggests that the rebellions represented the birth of a theoretical consciousness and asserts that India’s long subaltern tradition lent power to the landmark insurgence led by Mahatma Gandhi. First published in 2000, Dipesh Chakrabarty's influential Provincializing Europe addresses the mythical figure of Europe that is often taken to be the original site of modernity in many histories of capitalist transition in non-Western countries. This imaginary Europe, Dipesh Chakrabarty argues, is built into the social sciences. The very idea of historicizing carries with it some peculiarly European assumptions about disenchanted space, secular time, and sovereignty. Measured against such mythical standards, capitalist transition in the third world has often seemed either incomplete or lacking. Provincializing Europe proposes that every case of transition to capitalism is a case of translation as well--a translation of existing worlds and their thought--categories into the categories and self-understandings of capitalist modernity. Now featuring a new preface in which Chakrabarty responds to his critics, this book globalizes European thought by exploring how it may be renewed both for and from the margins.
