Mano Le Tough
Internasjonal
One of Mano Le Tough's favored tricks is to use the bassline to introduce or anchor a new melodic passage. He'll keep a track locked into an entrancing, monotonic groove buoyed by a one-note bass pattern, and suddenly the bass will unspool into a heart-tugging riff. It feels a bit like being dragged from the heavens back onto the dusty earth, and that's also how I often feel when listening to this three-tracker of gorgeous, dreamy emo house: I'm floating in space, far away from my problems, then something concrete—a melody or vocal—digs into my heart and pulls back into the confused, messy realm of human desire.
On the title track a wavering male voice emerges out of bell-ringing bliss to croon "I'm sorry I didn't wait around to say goodbye, I guess I didn't want to wait around to see you cry." The voice is slightly meandering, almost stumbling, as if the words are uncertain, and hard to get out. When this sentiment, simultaneously gentle and cowardly, gets latched onto a warm disco house beat, it turns into raver break-up music, perfect for Morrissey fans on MDMA.
The other two tunes here form a neat trifecta with "In My Arms," each a welcome variant on mixing the melancholic with the psychedelic. This kind of aesthetic interplay gives additional urgency to the record's more spaced-out sections, which become additionally cathartic, ecstatically overcoming the gravity of conflicted emotion, even if for just one blissed-out, weightless instant, when filtered pads surge forth and synth notes seem to echo into infinity. On "Those Lights are Lives," trance tones spiral over a haunting Rhodes chord progression, and I feel like I'm barreling into the unknown future in a first-class cabin.

It's been a while since Smallpeople last appeared on Hamburg's celebrated Smallville imprint. Amazingly, this is their first release on the imprint for three years. Happily, they appear to have retained their famed sense of atmosphere, dropping three winding deep house gems that variously soothe and seduce the senses. The expansive, melody-rich "Blissful Limbo" sets the tone via sinewy strings, tactile grooves and yearning vocal samples, before "Lowrider Anarchy" goes charging off towards the dancefloor via rugged bottom end and smooth melodies. They aptly round things off with "Lazy Lama Legend", the deep house equivalent of wrapping yourself in a duvet and sipping on a fine single malt whisky.

F.D. “The Journey To Another Place”~Frank Dorittke
关于 F.D.

Woolfy vs Projections
Permanent Vacatio
Los Angeles duo Simon James and Dan Hastie resurface with their Woolfy vs Projections project: ‘Combination’ is the first single from their upcoming third album Stations. It will not only see them return to their Munich label home Permanent Vacation, but also finish the trilogy they started with 2008’s The Astral Projections of Starlight and 2012’s The Return of Love. The trilogy’s story revolves around the tale of lost astronaut Captain Starlight, who continues his adventures — on ‘Combination’ his expeditions lead him onto sticky synth planets, shooting out intergalactic fluids in bubbly disco manners; and Permanent Vacation co-founder Benjamin Fröhlich even discovers high-pitched alien voices in his spooky edit of the single.

Pretty Lights
Pretty Lights Music
BY NATTY MORRISON
One of the most difficult things to do in music is carve out a style all your own. All the heavy-hitters have done it; you have to be able to pull from all your influences without letting their voices bleed too deeply into your music. That task can be even more difficult for electronic artists. The traditional process of dropping sampled music and vocals in and out of tracks can lead critics to accuse them of a musical-identity heist. For Pretty Lights (aka Derek Vincent Smith), it’s nothing he’s not used to.
"One thing I've run into a lot, is people that immediately judge artists who sample as music thieves without enough of their own creativity to make good music on their own,” Smith said. “Now, with some producers, I'd say that might not be far from the truth, but I strive to always use samples in a way that brings new life and feeling to them.”
And it’s really never been a problem for him. Pretty Lights is instantly recognizable; whether you’ve heard the song before or not, within moments you KNOW it’s him. He’s soulful without losing and edge and has been making waves in the electronic community for years, with heavily spun tracks like “Sunday School” and “Finally Moving.” Smith is, if nothing else, a style unto himself, and he’s out to prove that on his terrific new EP “Spilling Over Every Side.”
Opening with a dreamy piano line, the EP’s first cut “High School Art Class” is classic Pretty Lights. Raw and gritty without leaving out any of the soul, Smith get right to work piling up the layers. As the track begins to build steam in the opening seconds, strains of a loping acoustic blend with blurts of distortion, swooping synth lines and horn stabs. Once the drums kick in, the listener is instantly transported to a head-nodding paradise, while the piano’s blue notes tumble over a soulful vocal sample that promises “Soon I will be gone from the trouble of this world.” That’s one of the most impressive features of any Pretty Lights album: he can be emotionally affecting without even realizing it.
The album gets heavier – and glitchier - on the next song, “Hot Like Dimes.” Building from pulsing synth bass and a rapid arpeggiator, the song explodes into a cacophony of hip hop vocals, grinding electric guitar chords and blasts of digitized squeals. It can be overwhelming, but it’s a thrilling ride nonetheless.
Smith finds beauty in “Let the World Hurry By,” letting an acoustic strum stretch out in front of him. It feels like watching an other-worldly deity paint in a summer sunset, beginning with earnestness and focus, until the swirling hues and tones become all too much to take. And then, without saying a word, he takes you gently by the hand, prepares for a brisk jump, and then launches you into outer space. Contemplative, down-tempo electro is soon replaced by intergalactic wobble-bass and shattering snare hits. The drums skitter along and all vocal samples are put aside. This isn’t time for Smith to hearken back to a forgotten world of blues and soul; he’s firmly in control and he knows it’s his time to shine. Once he’s finished building star-encrusted towers of thick synth blasts, he brings it all back home, finishing off with that old acoustic strum and brilliantly placed vocal riffs.
“Look Both Ways” is a nimble cut. It begins with a smoky jazz piano, while vinyl static drags through the background. It feels vintage and fresh at the same time, like a moment of déjà vu just barely out of reach. The drums groove along at an up-tempo beat, all the while Smith is deftly dropping in and out of small melodic sections and sampled pieces. It’s subtle, but noticeable if you dig a little deeper: even when he’s complex he never leads you astray.
“Forever Lost” and “A Million Tomorrows” round out the disc. The former is an explosive and incendiary fist-in-the-air cut, with the cut-up vocal line of a soulful singer trading off the lead with bombastic horn screams. The latter is a moment of cinematic conceptualization. It sounds like a slow-motion montage in a pivotal scene of a classic gangster movie, beginning in a quiet place and eventually rising to an intense crescendo at the album’s close. It’s soulful; it’s dark; it’s over-the-top in the best way possible. Essentially, it’s Pretty Lights. And who would want it any other way?
Purposely Uncertain Field
Permanent Vacation
Martin Enke's first release as Lake People was 2011's "Rusty Clockhands," a Get Physical-style jacker that fused a melancholy aura to minimal-minded rhythms. (The track boasted a few clicks and whirrs, too, perhaps left over from his previous IDM incarnation as Trickform.) But for most of us, Lake People's story begins with 2012's "Point In Time," a fantastic tech house track whose mellow ambience was catnip to DJs unafraid of the gentler end of the clubbing spectrum. The same could be said for Enke's soothing remixes of artists like Avatism, Lusine, and Dixon and Guy Gerber.
Purposely Uncertain Field is Enke's first LP, and it sees him broadening his sonic palette while retaining the introspective, emotive feel that characterizes his music. The opening track, "Escape Velocity," is a hypnotic groover, propelled by a linear charge and shimmering keys—as with much of Enke's work, there's something heavenly hovering in the background. "Drifting Red" is another blissful beauty, but might be too sweet for some palettes—the track's synth lead, while lovely in its hollowed-out way, borders on overkill. Still, it's redeemed by a wistful melody, which also suffuses the album's three brief interludes, "Entangled," "Orb" and "Bora."
The syncopated kick drum of "Drifting Red" gives the song a slight electro feel, something that really comes to the fore on the vaguely ominous "Lamb Shift." But even here, Enke manages to evoke the rich spaciousness that permeates all of Purposely Uncertain Field. "Glease 29," another electro-tinged number, is a bit more abstract, with hymnal chords conveying a sense of lonely wonder. "Illuminated" laces acidic pulsations through a driving rhythm lightened by syncopated handclaps and hi-hats. "Blackpoint" is a beast of a track, with a percussive thrust that anchors its synth washes. On the closer, "Distance," Enke pairs glitch with grandeur—a gorgeous coda to an album defined by depth and emotion.

Dub Resistance, Christophe Levin and Alex Monnet, are two songwriters and producers from Marseilles. Together with singer Jah B they impressively show us that France also does not want break away from the influence of the Jamaican dub scene.
Dub Resistance, supported by singer Jah B and various female vocalists, use dub as a starting point for their ventures into a wide range of styles from house, lounge and dope beatz to melancholic dub reggae. Jah B., an original “toaster” and native Jamaican, ensures that the vocals are authentic.
Without a doubt the highlights on the 11-track album include the house-oriented “Electrified & Numb” alongside the relaxed “Take A Rock” and “Rubba Dub” with its raw vocal lines.
The protagonists have indeed managed to combine traditional dub sounds with all kinds of wonderful ingredients from electronic music.
