Renowned director Lars Von Trier's stroke of genius in making his 2000 film DANCER IN THE DARK was to cast Iceland-born avant-pop siren Bjork in the central role and then enlist her aid in composing and performing a series of musical numbers for the movie. In the film, Bjork's character Selma lives an unrelentingly hard life as a single mother and factory worker who is quickly going blind. The film's songs come from Selma's inner world, where she (and the audience) find respite from all the harshness of reality.
Bjork's compositions, with orchestral arrangements from Vince Mendoza, hang together on their own quite nicely. Catherine Deneuve (Bjork's co-star) and Radiohead's Thom Yorke make effective vocal cameos, but Bjork's voice and music are the central focus. As we hear the industrial sounds of the factory turn into the rhythm of a song, or follow Bjork's oddly intuitive melodic leaps through a dreamlike haze of strings, it becomes clear that her idiosyncratic writing style adapts quite well to the cinematic milieu. As usual, her uniquely entrancing singing style stands out above almost all else.

Deadpool is an upcoming superhero adventure film based on the popular Marvel comic book character of the same name. Directed by newcomer Tim Miller and starring Ryan Reynolds (Smokin’ Aces, Safe House) as the titular protagonist, Deadpool follows irreverent mercenary Wade Wilson into Vancouver’s seedy underbelly. After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, Wade is subjected to sadistic experiments in an attempt to cure himself. The treatment hideously deforms him and leaves his mind unhinged. Enraged by betrayal, Wade adopts the moniker of Deadpool and begins hunting down the men responsible for his transformation. Junkie XL (Mad Mad: Fury Road, Divergent) delivers a robust, pulsing score that is as energetic and relentless as Deadpool himself. It ties in seamlessly with the eclectic mix of songs featured prominently in the film, including tracks by DMX, Wham!, and Salt-N-Pepa.

Mogwai release their stunning soundtrack to the documentary by prolific director, Mark Cousins; Atomic: Living In Dread and Promise which was aired on BBC Four last summer. The soundtrack has been especially re-recorded for release at the band's Castle Of Doom Studios in Glasgow. Guest appearances on the album come from occasional band member Luke Sutherland, Sophie and former The God Machine's Robin Proper-Sheppard and Glasgow composer Robert Newth. Artwork includes images from the film and comes in the form of CD, double gatefold heavy pressed vinyl with download code and digital download. As with their soundtrack to the Zidane documentary, the band will be performing this soundtrack live at dates across the world throughout 2016.
