The Films in My Life 豆瓣
作者: François Truffaut Da Capo Press 1994 - 8
François Truffaut (1932-1984), perhaps the most respected member of the New Wave group of French moviemakers, left a legacy of beloved and influential films that include The 400 Blows, Jules and Jim, Stolen Kisses, Day for Night, and The Story of Adele H. Equally fascinating is the very large body of film criticism Truffaut wrote over many years for Cahiers du Cinema and other leading film journals. Wonderfully varied, personal, and informal, these reviews all communicate unabashed love for and an enormous excitement about the movies. The Films in My Life is Truffaut’s own selection of more than one hundred essays that range widely over the history of film and pay tribute to Truffaut’s particular heroes, among them Hitchcock, Welles, Chaplin, Renoir, Cocteau, Bergman, and Buñuel.

Diana Scheunemann (Collana) 豆瓣
作者: Rankin Damiani 2005 - 9
Photographer Diana Scheunemann has shot high-fashion advertising with gorgeous, statuesque models and she has shot sexually frank pictures of her friends (who look like gorgeous, statuesque models), but here's the real artistry: She manages to pull it off so that a sense of play rather than envy or lust or exploitation is paramount. Scheunemann is not interested in the mopey model pout. Her subjects enjoy their romps in the buff, clearly at ease with her camera. The sex is real but hardly titillating (well, maybe a little). Her work resembles a more polished version of her fellow countryman Wolfgang Tillmans's photographs of his friends--spontaneous, open, and real. This book is part of the new series called Damiani Forward, focusing on new, up and coming photographers.

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
"A compendium of cutting-edge art." - Miami HeraldThe summer forecast for contemporary art is decidedly "cooler" thanexpected.Massive cutting-edge international exhibitions including TheVenice Biennale, Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany and Sculpture ProjectsMuenster are all scheduled for June 2007 and the art world will be abuzz. But what if you can't make it to these events and you want a piece of theaction?ICE CREAM: CONTEMPORARY ART IN CULTURE is an up to the minute collection ofthe most exceptional contemporary artists of tomorrow. It presents 100 ofthe world's top emerging artists selected by 10 esteemed curators includingJens Hoffman, Director of the CCA Wattis Institute in San Francisco; ShamimMomin, Associate Curator at the Whitney; Philippe Vergne, Chief Curator atthe Walker Art Center; and The Wrong Gallery, formally "the smallestexhibition space in New York" that is now housed within the Tate Modern.Continuing the phenomenon established by its predecessors Cream (1998)Fresh Cream (2000) and Cream 3 (2003) as in "one that rises to the top,"ICE CREAM identifies the cutting edge artists to watch in the future.Theprevious titles were a favorite among collectors as they accuratelypredicted a number of art stars including Tacita Dean, Olafur Eliasson andThomas Hirschhorn.Stylishly designed, ICE CREAM also upholds the series'heritage of innovative packaging by featuring a shiny iridescent cover. In ICE CREAM, each curator has selected 10 important new artists who haveeither emerged internationally over the past five years, or are stillrelatively unknown.Their definition of emerged means that an artist hashad solo shows, but nothing large-scale in a major institution (apart froma couple recent exceptions), has been reviewed in the international artpress, but not been the subject of a major monograph, and has been givensufficient exposure without yet becoming fully established. In the selection process, no limitations on geography or media wereimposed. Over 25 countries are represented including China (a currentfavorite with collectors), Brazil Russia, Canada, Slovenia, Korea, Israel,Kenya, Mexico and the U.S.Age was also not a factor. The Wrong Galleryeven went so far as to select the "most unlikely candidates."MassimilianoGioni explained, "In other words, we went for the wrong ones: artists whoare more than 60 years old; artists who are not emerging, but have emergedor simply stuck around long enough to make their voices heard by anyone whowould listen."They selected artists such as Maria Lassnig, David Medallaand Jiri Kovanda.ICE CREAM opens with a conversation between the contributors as they debatethe changing role of the curator and current trends in contemporary art, including: *The blurring of roles between artist and curator demonstrated by thefact that artists have recently been invited to make selections inexhibitions. For example, The Wrong Gallery curated the 4th Berlin Biennialfor Contemporary Art (2006) and presented an exhibition within the 2006Whitney Biennial. The ICA London also exhibited the "Artist's Favorites"show in 2004.*The shift in the conception of the exhibition that expands beyondmuseum walls. Inserting art in different environments.*The effect of private art spaces that are run by collectors todisplay their own collections.Jens Hoffman states, "This will have astrong impact on the overall landscape of contemporary art, since many ofthose collectors who are opening spaces are also the people who give moneyto public institutions, which they'll probably cease to do (once they havetheir own location)." *The impact of the booming art market on artists who seem deeplyaffected by the pressure to conform to market forces and adapt their work. Each of the 100 artists is featured over four pages with a selection oftheir work together with a commentary by the curator who selected them, anexhibition history, and a bibliography.Every curator also selects aSource Artist, namely any artist from any previous generat

The Silver Spoon 豆瓣
作者: Clelia D'Onofrio / Giovanna Mazzocchi Phaidon Press 2005 - 10
The Silver Spoon is the most influential and successful cookbook in Italy. Originally published in 1950, it became an instant classic. Considered to be essential in every household, it is still one of the most popular wedding presents today.
The Silver Spoon was conceived and published by Domus, the design and architectural magazine famously directed by Giò Ponti from the 1920s to the 1970s. A group of cooking experts was commissioned to collect hundreds of traditional recipes from the different Italian regions and make them available for the first time to a wider audience. In the process, they updated ingredients, quantities and methods to suit contemporary tastes and customs, at the same time preserving the memory of ancient recipes for future generations. They also included modern recipes from some of the most famous Italian chefs, resulting in a style of cooking that appeals to the gourmet as well as the occasional cook
A comprehensive and lively book, its simple and user-friendly format makes it both accessible and a pleasure to read. It provides an introduction to every course, and an explanation of the main type of ingredients. Never translated before, The Silver Spoon has now been adapted to an international market, with every recipe checked for suitability, measurements converted and methods rewritten to accommodate cultural differences, yet maintaining the authenticity of real Italian cooking.
The new layout emphasizes its contemporary appeal and the colour coding of each section simplifies the process of cross-referencing ingredients and methods. A section with original menus from the 15 most famous Italian chefs of the last 50 years has been expanded to include original menus from Italian celebrity chefs working outside Italy.
This is a substantial and prestigious cookbook that will share the bookshelves with other titles such as The Joy of Cooking and Larousse Gastronomique, another classic of national cuisine. With over 2,000 recipes illustrated with specially commissioned artwork and photography, the book is destined to become a classic in the Italian cooking booklist for the international market.

Fresh Fruits 豆瓣
作者: Shoichi Aoki Phaidon Press 2005 - 5
Fresh Fruits is the second collection of Tokyo street fashion portraits from Japan's premier street fanzine, comprising the sequel to the hugely successful compilation Fruits, published in 2001. Fruits magazine swept Japan off its feet in 1997.
Initially a project to document the relentless explosion in street fashion in the suburbs of Tokyo, the magazine has grown to cult status. It is now avidly followed by thousands of Japanese teenagers, who also use the magazine as an opportunity to keep up with the latest styles and trends. The average age of kids featured in the magazine is between 12 and 18.
The captivating element of each image is the vibrant mixture of high fashion - Vivienne Westwood is a fixation - and home-made ensembles, which ignites a fresh, even feverish, effect. This second extensive collection of the magazine's best portraits embodies a unique documentation of the continually changing face of street fashion. It illustrates the fullness - and frenzy - of life in the 'fashion eco-system' of Harajuku. The reach of this wild eccentricity is reflected by Gwen Stefani's video Rich Girls, starring four 'Harajuku Girls'.
Fresh Fruits includes translations of the diverse Japanese captions which were originally attached to the photographs that list the name, age and clothing of each individual photographed. The images are at once strikingly real, and sublimely surreal.

Brazil's Modern Architecture 豆瓣
作者: Elisabetta Andreoli (Editor) / Adrian Forty (Editor) Phaidon 2007 - 10
Brazil's architecture is strikingly distinct from Latin America as a whole and diverse in itself. Yet coverage of the architecture of twentieth-century Brazil is all too often confined to the work of one man (Oscar Niemeyer) or the buildings of two cities (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo). In Brazil's Modern Architecture, a new generation of Brazilian cities and historians sets the record straight, providing a truly comprehensive survey and analysis of twentieth-century Brazilian architecture.
This tome embodies a vivid re-interpretation of Brazilian architecture throughout the course of the twentieth century: from the first modern houses of the 1920s and Le Corbusier's seminal visits to the country, through the well-known 'heroic' period of the 1940s-1950s to its post-1964 crisis, and up to contemporary developments. Works are examined from the 'inside' by explaining the cultural context that is crucial to a truly nuanced understanding of Brazilian architecture.
With bold originality, this book clarifies the often paradoxical relation between Brazil's political, social and economic history and its architectural development. Transcending past convention, it identifies - with unprecedented insight - the momentous architectural breakthroughs of twentieth-century Brazil with its tumultuous historical life. Where previous studies saw disintegration, this volume illustrates the often unrecognized threads of continuity between the most recent architectural work and that of the high-Modernist era of the mid-century.
Presented with elegant flair and argued with lively sophistication, Brazil's Modern Architecture is accessible and thought-provoking for the reader, and groundbreaking for the history of architecture.

Naoto Fukasawa 豆瓣
作者: Naoto Fukasawa Phaidon Press 2007 - 4
Naoto Fukasawa (b.1956) is one of the best-known Japanese product designers working today. After graduating from Tama Art University in 1980, he moved to the United States and worked at IDEO, one of the world's most innovative design companies. In 1997, Fukasawa moved back to Japan to set up the IDEO Tokyo office. During his time at IDEO, he developed his sense for how people perceive and use objects. In 2003, Fukasawa left IDEO to form his own design company Naoto Fukasawa Design. Besides being a consultant for major companies, especially MUJI, he has also set up a new product brand called PLUS MINUS ZERO, a collection of minimal home appliances and products that has achieved worldwide acknowledgement for its user-friendly aesthetics. Moreover, Fukasawa's designs for companies such as Driade and B&B Italia attracted attention in Europe at the 2005 Milan Furniture Fair, and have continued to do so since. Fukasawa's design philosophy relies on carefully observing what people do and feel in their everyday lives in order to find simple solutions that touch the senses and link to shared memories. By working with the 'iconic' value of a product, be it a watch or a sofa, Fukasawa is able to come up with designs that address the common knowledge about things that people have. His groundbreaking wall-mounted CD player for MUJI in 1999 was based on the image of a kitchen fan and moved away from all the conventions of hi-fi equipment manufacture. It was a simple appliance, restrained in appearance and function, and very different from the numerous black boxes that had become the standard in the market. Interestingly, as Fukasawa's products are based on people's common and not always conscious view of things, his design solutions sometimes swim against the current of received opinions to achieve popularity and success. The LCD TV monitor he designed for PLUS MINUS ZERO reinstates the shape of the cathodic-tube TV set instead of becoming even thinner; his mobile telephone Infobar for KDDI/au has large keypads, referring back to the first models of the 1980s. The book is the first monograph published in English of the work of this innovative designer. Edited by Fukasawa himself and with contributions by writers from East and West, it includes a selection of his products to date, ranging from umbrellas and vases to sofas and telephones. Illustrated with never-before-seen photographs and drawings, Fukasawa's text elucidates the ideas behind each of his projects. Essays by artists, designers, and lecturers, notably Antony Gormley, Jasper Morrison and Bill Moggridge from IDEO, complete the book by giving an account of Fukasawa's design philosophy and of the significance of his work for the contemporary design world.

Gothic and Lolita 豆瓣
作者: Masayuki Yoshinaga / Katsuhiko Ishikawa Phaidon 2007
"Gothic & Lolita" charts the current trend of Gothic street fashion that has swept Japan over the last decade. Influenced by Western fashion trends from the mid 1980s, young teenagers, predominately adolescent girls, congregate in the urban centres of Harajuku, Akihabara and a number of underground clubs in and around Tokyo, dressed head-to-toe in gothic costumes and late-Victorian dress. The psychological characteristics of the average Japanese Goth is one of introversion and exclusivity. The majority of girls in the scene are teenagers and most usually stop by the age of eighteen. The origin of the movement was in Osaka in the mid 1990s when young teenagers adopted Gothic fashion in response to the clothes worn and promoted by Japanese Gothic rock bands. In the ten years since the trend began it has expanded to a number of cities including Tokyo and now boasts many thousands of devotees who dedicate their lives to creating ever more flamboyant and bizarre variations on the Gothic theme. From handmade black lace dresses based on designs from the 1860s to 'Lolita' outfits, lacy Gothic designs that have a pre-pubescent 'rococo' edge to them, to dresses with an occult flavour, the Gothic and Lolita scene is one of the more bizarre hybrids within Japanese street fashion. "Gothic & Lolita" is specially commissioned by Phaidon Press. Based on the creative design of the best selling "Fruits and Fresh Fruits", it will feature portraits and group portraits of Japanese Goths and Lolitas both at home and in the urban centres of Tokyo and Osaka. In addition to the visual content of the book each subject will also be asked a number of questions about their handmade designs and why the fashion is so important to them. This text will run in a similar 'question and answer' format as in the original Fruits publications. The coupling of portraits and insightful first-person commentary will together make "Gothic & Lolita" the definitive book on the scene in both the West and in Japan, presenting an ideal opportunity to view one of the more surreal aspects of Japanese popular youth culture in an informative yet entertaining manner.
