One of the most unique concepts I've seen that fuses folklore with Lacanian psychoanalysis and Chalmers' philosophical zombie thought experiment. Also it's just so thematically packed that it deals with several relevant questions, such as our relationship with our parents and their presence or loss in our lives, and the struggle to define ourselves morally within these relationships or lack thereof. It's all presented with a lot of symbolism, mirrors featuring heavily, simultaneously going back to Lacan thematically, and representing the characters' attempts to break out of their own "self" which is also represented in their attempts to escape the forest that serves as the place that forces them into this torturous practice of self-reflection. The motifs from The Shining and La Haine also contextually enrich the film. But, as it progresses, it is able to lean more into Gothic influences aesthetically and finding melancholic beauty in the horrifying. In a way, this is also a perfect continuation of its themes, as any internal exploration hides horror and beauty within it. But even ignoring all the depth, the movie is just such an emotional ride with perfect performances and soundtrack, and the characters not only extremely relatable, but also so psychologically layered. And every line of dialogue is so meticulously written that it adds another puzzle piece to the mosaic. The ending brought me to tears. The "if we make it out of here, you can stay at my place" too.

2024年6月19日 评论 a review of 圣痕 - Ported from a dead account Genuinely one of the most unique movies I've seen. The premise is basically "what if the Gnostics were right?" Which in itself is a horrifying scenario. It avoids your typical good/evil god/devil dichotomy, keeping you wondering what exactly is happening till the end. The horror here is not very scary in its implementation, but is potentially infinitely terrifying in its implications. In other words, it's only as scary as your imagination will allow it to be. And it leaves you with more questions than answers, which only adds to that. It's a movie that attempts to kinda shatter your religious beliefs and then leave you sitting there in the pile of debris. The grimy urban millennial aesthetics are also sick. It's a commercial movie, and visually it's more creative than 90% of the movies released in the last 20 years. Still, I wouldn't say it has any particular scenes that wowed me. The horror aspect gets under your skin, but the actual scenes that try to be scary are not. This movie is more about what's being said than what actually happens. And to get to the main point it takes a long time. It might've actually worked better as a short film.

2024年6月13日 评论 a review of 最后的风之子 - Ported from a dead account Star Wars meets A Touch of Zen There are bad movies, and then there are movies that demand from the audience a level of cultural and spiritual development. The inability to appreciate such movies says more about the person than about the movie. I once saw a video that was a retort to the people who call Avatar: The Last Airbender a kid show. The video was a compilation of scenes from the show that featured either partial nudity or gruesome deaths. This should really tell you everything you need to know about the fanbase of the show, which consists almost entirely of manchildren, who are conditioned to perceive stories in only one, digested and conformed format. Personally, I've never been a fan of the show. Not because it's bad (it seems alright for a kid show), but because it's orientalist. It fetishizes aspects of Eastern cultures, without meaningfully engaging with their substance. This movie is kinda doing the opposite. Shyamalan understands the ideas Avatar is based on better than the show and chooses to engage directly with them, instead of simply copying the show (because doing otherwise would be pointless). While limited by the constraints of the show's plot, he elevates the source material by using techniques pioneered by George Lucas and King Hu to enrich the visual storytelling. Like the aforementioned directors, he engages with archetypes, environment and choreography, using them symbolically to convey more than the primitive plot of the show could allow. Yet there are a few crucial changes to the story that further add complexity to it. I've never really watched the show (except for occasionally catching an episode here and there on TV), but I've seen a lot of reviews on youtube, which only rival each other in dim-witted shallow comparisons. It seems like comparing the superficial elements of the story is all they can do. To give you an example, I saw one YouTuber make a point that the earthbending villagers always had the power to revolt against the Fire Nation, implying that this is some kinda plothole and that the Avatar's arrival there is pointless. Failing to understand that the whole point of the scene is that the people are shackled by their own fear and the scene is about the liberation from that fear. A topic later revisited in detail in After Earth . Shyamalan intentionally chooses to engage with the theme central to Daoism and Chan Buddhism, which is far more interesting than whatever the implied alternative is. In fact, this type of criticism makes me think some people are incapable of even understanding the reality they live in, let alone a fictional world. Imagine watching Schindler's List and going "why don't the Jews just revolt when they outnumber the Nazis in the camp?" The movie regularly operates in tenderness, surrender, moderation and humility as opposed to traditionally Western concepts of bravery, brute force and struggle. The forces of nature are presented as terrifyingly powerful, but they mirror the inner worlds of the characters (like in A Touch of Zen ). Aang cannot easily learn waterbending, not because he's incapable to, but because his internal conflict (grief) is making it impossible to control the destructive power of water. And this is conveyed purely with the visual language. Only after he lets go, the Dao manifests through him and restores the universal balance. But what I find interesting is that Aang is not even the protagonist. This must be inspired by the similar concept in Star Wars (where the droids, not Luke, were the protagonists), which in turn was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. It is no wonder that the film occasionally resembles a Zhang Yimou movie to me, as Shyamalan and Zhang clearly had similar influences. The story is driven forward mainly by other characters, while Aang ends up just kinda going along. The only time he shows agency (his escape to a temple) not enforced by the conditions imposed upon him, it doesn't achieve any result. Instead the movie is much more concerned with the powerless and the vulnerable, such as Zuko, perfectly played by Dev Patel. Sokka is also a lovable character without being reduced to a cartoony buffoon like in the show. And his chemistry with the princess is pure, innocent and heartwarming. The action scenes are some of the greatest you'll ever see in a Western movie. Perhaps second only to the Star Wars prequels. The way the cinematography, the environment and the soundtrack sync with the choreography shows a great understanding of the Chinese masters of the Wuxia genre in the last 40 years of the 20th century. Makes me wish we'd see more martial arts movies from Shyamalan, he's a natural. Finally, I want to kinda acknowledge the elephant in the room. Yes, the movie is far from perfect. It does have some structural problems, it appears kinda rushed, the casting is a hit or miss and racially problematic. I have a lot to say on these topics and could write an entire essay about just that, but these problems do not really concern the essence of this movie. Yes, another 40 minutes of runtime would help flesh out the characters more and reduce some exposition. That would definitely make it a better film, but it wouldn't really change the actual quality of the filmmaking on display here. So I chose to make this review about the actual heart of the movie, rather than the form or the outer surface. In fact, when I first saw this movie, I found it kinda boring. That was in 2013. The next time I watched it, I didn't pay that much attention to the story because I didn't expect it to be very good. As I stopped listening to the words, that's when the movie opened up to me. That was three years ago, in 2021. Now that I intentionally decided to focus on the visual aspects, by the middle of the movie I actually found myself very invested in the story. Because, like Star Wars, this movie prioritizes visuals and they're paramount to the understanding of the archetypal storytelling here.

2024年4月22日 评论 a review of 花月杀手 - Ported from a dead account Feels almost like a companion piece for The Irishman. I had to rewatch The Irishman to truly appreciate it, and I think I need to rewatch this at some point. It likes to foreshadow deaths and play around with the timeline, like The Irishman did, but where it differs majorly is in its hell and redemption arcs. This story is much bleaker, but it has something of a redemption arc, and I like that it's somewhat open to interpretation. In The Irishman there was no redemption. Also death is not the end of the journey here, at least for some characters. I feel both movies are very Christian in their themes. I hear a lot of Osage people thought this film wasn't a good representation of them. But it's not really a film about Osage. It's wrong to even look at it as if its goal was representation.

Because, if there was a Travis among those they know, they'd never do anything to stop him. What do you know about traversing streets looking for trouble? Being out at night in the bad part of town for no reason? Thinking to yourself: "I wish that fucker tried something because I wanna fuck somebody up"? Because you get sick to your stomach by the indifference. You were raised upon the principles that nobody upholds. So much, in fact, that the reviews framing it as a film about sexuality irritate me to no end. How boring must one be to think this way. Even more irritating is the review from comrade_yui. A complete misunderstanding of the main themes of the film. These days a lot of people get into paganism because they view Christianity as oppressive. But gods are not your playtoys. One of the film's central conflicts would've been impossible if it didn't treat Christianity with reverence. I'm sick and tired of this culture of celebration and condemnation. There is no place for nuance. This movie is precisely what is needed now, in fact it's quite prophetic, but behold, most people still manage to lump it into categories with pointless celebrations. Queerness is not something to be celebrated. To say that would imply that heterosexuality is something to be condemned. Paganism isn't to be celebrated either. We're living in the world enjoying centuries of Christian, Jewish and Muslim thought. All the artistic, philosophical and scientific achievements that came out of direct engagement with religion. But now you're making me sound like one of those disgusting conservatives. How about we turn from the society of celebration and condemnation to the society of contemplation that we once were? This movie is about duality, and the attempt to make sense of the seemingly mutually exclusive components that make up Britain's past. And while it is directly about Britain, its message is relevant in many other countries. In fact, because it is about internal conflicts, it's relevant within most people.

2024年1月16日 评论 a review of 辛普森一家 - Ported from a dead account Would be wrong to perceive this in a vacuum. This is essentially the finale of the series. A swan song, created by the people behind the golden age of The Simpsons, the greatest comedy TV series of all time. Having repeatedly lost soulmates and role models, consistently misunderstood and dismissed, Lisa finally finds someone like her. A boy who not only listens to her, but shares her interests in music, environment and justice. I couldn't help but think about "Moaning Lisa" and "Lisa's Substitute" and feel happy that for once she found a little happiness. I was also happy to see Martin stand up to bullies and the comic book guy concluding that his obsession with comics was "life well spent". Correct conclusion if you ask me. And Bart and Homer jumping over the Springfield Gorge together as a callback to "Bart the Daredevil" is a perfect symbolism for their bonding. And finally Maggie gets to kill [or at least severely injure] her final victim. The one thing that was missing is, when the dome is blown up and the glass pieces are raining down on the crowd that looks up, Lenny should've screamed "Ow, my eye! I'm not supposed get glass in it!" Sure, the series technically continued after this, but in my headcanon it had been dead for two seasons by the time this came out. Seeing how this film was written by the series' veteran writers (including Matt Groening himself), this is the last major piece of the Simpsons media that is artistically connected to the series-defining seasons that shaped the very identity of this show. I'll just keep pretending this came out after season 16 and was the actual finale.

2024年1月4日 评论 a review of 摇啊摇,摇到外婆桥 - Ported from a dead account Fat Yu's gang did it. Your uncle died protecting me. Take a good look. His open eyes cry out for vengeance. I recently compared Raise The Red Lantern to The Godfather. Shanghai Triad kinda reminded me of Goodfellas, as a sort of antithetic response to it. The first half of the film takes you into the behind-the-scenes luxury and masculine power trip of a gangster lifestyle. The second half juxtaposes it with the countryside, innocence and femininity, shedding light at the commonly overlooked and dismissed victims of this lifestyle. A deglorification of evil. Much as I loved Zhang's trademark style, this film didn't resonate with me as strongly as it did the first time, or as some of his other films did on my recent viewings. Though it certainly has a staying power. It didn't make me cry, but I already want to re-experience some of the moments. If anything, this is proof that Zhang Yimou can make even an underwhelming script shine with his masterful filmmaking.

So intimate and minimalist at times, feels like a stage play.

That's who we are. That's what we do. Suppose this could've been my life story. Lekia is somewhat like Sicily. And my circumstances are somewhat like Mikey's. I dodged the lifestyle when they wanted me, and I never rose to the occasion. The truth is that I'm worse than Fredo. I'm fickle and can't be relied on. No loyalty, no sanctity. I look them in the eyes and say "please trust me", and then I write another 5 pages and crush the bearing pillars. I can't defend myself. This world keeps trying to eat me alive, but it's choking on the poison. Haha. Call for the Grim Reaper, he has something of mine.

2023年10月25日 评论 a review of 惊魂记 - Ported from a dead account Psycho's premise succeeds, whether intentionally or not, in expanding its horror beyond the boundaries of the particular case being depicted here. The protagonist flees her personal hell only to become entrapped in someone else's. The randomness of the encounter cements this movie as a piece of dark Americana. A society of paranoias, traumas and deeply buried secrets that externalize themselves through unquenchable desire. Can't help but be reminded of Alien and Silent Hill 2 (the game). The former replicates the randomness of the encounter in an uncaring, hostile universe. The latter is a congregation and interlapping of externalized traumas.

My computer is opposite the TV, so I see the reflection every night. Nietzsche was wrong about this. But seeing yourself in the mirror - that's when you have someone staring back. But you know the true void? Isabelle Adjani's character here. You jump in, you will be forever lost. There's no greater nightmare than an eternal bliss.

Satire only becomes more poignant the more bizarre it gets. And once it reaches surrealism, it makes more sense than ever.
Robocop 2 understands its predecessor and takes it further in the same direction until the boundaries start to blur. It reminds me of Ringu 2, which is another great sequel unfairly berated by boring people.
