Since the early 1990s, while mainland China’s state-owned movie studios have struggled with financial and ideological constraints, an exciting alternative cinema has developed. Dubbed the “Urban Generation,” this new cinema is driven by young filmmakers who emerged in the shadow of the events at Tiananmen Square in 1989. What unites diverse directors under the “Urban Generation” rubric is their creative engagement with the wrenching economic and social transformations underway in China. Urban Generation filmmakers are vanguard interpreters of the confusion and anxiety triggered by the massive urbanization of contemporary China. This collection brings together some of the most recent original research on this emerging cinema and its relationship to Chinese society.The contributors analyze the historical and social conditions that gave rise to the Urban Generation, its aesthetic innovation, and its ambivalent relationship to China’s mainstream film industry and the international film market. From a semio-pragmatic perspective and drawing on an interdisciplinary and intermedial approach, this book analyses how the audiovisual thinking process manifests itself in essay films. The volume discusses the European Francophone essay film from its first appearance in cinematic modernity to the present. The study is developed in three stages. The first analyses the intermedial forms that are used: the letter, the (self-)portrait, the dialogue, the diptych, etc. The second examines the audiovisual materials that are mobilised. The third addresses the audiovisual procedures that are generated. This volume will be a ‘time capsule’ of the first 10 years of Studies in Documentary Film (2007–2016), tracing not only the development of the journal but also of documentary studies in the same period. Issues such as the rise of digital documentary forms and authorship, documentary activism, and the Chinese Independent documentary, as well as diverse political issues, will be raised in the introduction and evidenced in the articles. The chapters have been chosen for the various themes they raise in documentary studies but also the broader field of documentary scholarship (including publishing), and the rise of the internet as a powerful force in documentary studies.

This innovative and widely praised volume uses the dramatic occupation of Tiananmen Square as the foundation for rethinking the cultural dimensions of Chinese politics. Now in a revised and expanded second edition, the book includes enhanced coverage of key issues, such as the political dimensions of popular culture (addressed in a new chapter on Chinese rock-and-roll by Andrew Jones) and the struggle for control of public discourse in the post-1989 era (discussed in a new chapter by Tony Saich). Two especially valuable additions to the second edition are art historian Tsao Tsing-yuan's eyewitness account of the making of the Goddess of Democracy, and an exposition of Chinese understandings of the term 'revolution' contributed by Liu Xiaobo, one of China's most controversial dissident intellectuals. The volume also includes an analysis (by noted social theorist and historical sociologist Craig C. Calhoun) of the similarities and differences between the 'new' social movements of recent decades and the 'old' social movements of earlier eras. 《裸舞代》是由筆名老虹的小說家虹影撰寫的第一本小說，1992年由台灣文化生活出版，其後被翻譯為多國語言，但至今仍在中國大陸遭到禁止。小說背景設定為1989年的天安門鎮壓，是最早發行的篇幅完整地講述六四屠城的文學作品之一。全書分為四章，時間跨度從六月屠城延續了兩個月，每章都由日期來串聯：6月4日，6月14日，7月14日及8月2日。小說敘述一個女學生林影及她周圍的知識份子、畫家和記者朋友在鎮壓後的各自命運。

《裸舞代》走在史實與虛構、自傳與想像之間——與虹影自身經歷相呼應的是，林影來自於四川一座河畔小城，之後到北京學習，且是一位詩人，而詩歌也是這部小說中的一大主題。在天安門鎮壓、戒嚴令令人窒息的政治壓力之下，蒙著面紗而閃爍其辭的詩的語言成了為數不多的安全的自我表達方式之一。此外，小說中關於性的描寫也見證了林影的重心從詩到性的改造與轉變過程：當政府侵佔她的私人空間令她的藝術創作如履薄冰時，她轉向自己的身體尋求力量。如虹影在小說中所寫：「每一種姿勢都是一種祈禱，她感到自己變成了藝術，性的藝術，性的詩。」
