A History of Psychiatry [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Edward Shorter 出版社: Wiley 1998 - 3
"PPPP ...To compress 200 years of psychiatric theory and practice into a compelling and coherent narrative is a fine achievement ...What strikes the reader [most] are Shorter's storytelling skills, his ability to conjure up the personalities of the psychiatrists who shaped the discipline and the conditions under which they and their patients lived."--Ray Monk The Mail on Sunday magazine, U.K. "An opinionated, anecdote-rich history...While psychiatrists may quibble, and Freudians and other psychoanalysts will surely squawk, those without a vested interest will be thoroughly entertained and certainly enlightened."--Kirkus Reviews. "Shorter tells his story with immense panache, narrative clarity, and genuinely deep erudition."--Roy Porter Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. In A History of Psychiatry, Edward Shorter shows us the harsh, farcical, and inspiring realities of society's changing attitudes toward and attempts to deal with its mentally ill and the efforts of generations of scientists and physicians to ease their suffering. He paints vivid portraits of psychiatry's leading historical figures and pulls no punches in assessing their roles in advancing or sidetracking our understanding of the origins of mental illness. Shorter also identifies the scientific and cultural factors that shaped the development of psychiatry. He reveals the forces behind the unparalleled sophistication of psychiatry in Germany during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well as the emergence of the United States as the world capital of psychoanalysis. This engagingly written, thoroughly researched, and fiercely partisan account is compelling reading for anyone with a personal, intellectual, or professional interest in psychiatry.

Warren Buffet
From AudioFile
This program takes a fundamental view of what it takes to be a top-drawer business worthy of your investment dollar. It's based on traditional company variables like capitalization, market position, and labor relations, and some new variables like organizational adaptability and leadership depth and vision. The broad thinking and nuances are so intuitive and clearly drawn that listeners won't even realize how abstract and intelligent this writing is. The impressive piece of work is nicely abridged, and George Guidall is as connected to the material as anyone could be. Still, this is not for the cognitively challenged, nor for overly aggressive investors nor those with money hang-ups. A great resource for understanding why some companies are great and which ones will be. T.W.

"The ruminations of supposedly hush-hush hedge fund operators are richly illuminating." -- New York Times
From the Inside Flap
In today's difficult investment environment, where geopolitical and social instability compound an already challenging search for higher returns, hedge funds have outperformed. As a result, assets under management have exploded and top investment talent has migrated over to hedge funds. Amidst the growth and evolution of the business, one strategy—global macro—has remained true to its original mandate of absolute return investing, which seeks outsized returns from investments anywhere in the world, in any asset class, and in any instrument.
Although successful money managers often have a reputation for being reluctant to discuss their market views and trading strategies, Inside the House of Money opens the door to the typically opaque world of hedge funds—particularly global macro investing—and offers a rare glimpse into a high-intensity environment where enormous stakes are a part of everyday life. As cofounder and partner of Drobny Global Advisors—an international macroeconomic research and advisory firm—author Steven Drobny has access to a broad selection of today's top global macro hedge fund managers. Through detailed interviews with more than a dozen of these individuals, Drobny provides you with an inside look at how these money managers view world markets and offers subtle insights into how they make money.
First, you will receive an introduction to global macro from a professional investor's perspective. Then, you will discover how some key historical events have shaped this field. You will also learn how future events, such as increased competition and specialization, are pushing today's global macro manager into the realm of global micro investing. With this information in hand, you'll go Inside the House of Money through a collection of in-depth interviews with a variety of money managers, each with a unique perspective and approach to global markets, including:
* The Family Office Manager: Jim Leitner (Falcon Management)

作者: Edwin Lefèvre 出版社: Wiley 1994 - 5
Critical Praise.. "In my interviews with over 30 of the best traders of our time, there were some questions that I raised in each conversation. One of these was: Are there any books that you found particularly valuable and would recommend to aspiring traders? By far, the most frequent response was Reminiscences of a Stock Operator-a book that was over 70 years old!" -from the Foreword by Jack Schwager Author of Market Wizards and The New Market Wizards "Although Reminiscences.was first published some 70 years ago, its take on crowd psychology and market timing is as timely as last summer's frenzy on the foreign exchange markets." -Worth magazine "The most entertaining book written on investing is Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, by Edwin Lefevre, first published in 1923." -The Seattle Times "The best book I've read is Reminiscences of a Stock Operator. I keep a supply for people who come to work for me." -Martin Zweig "After 20 years and many re-reads, Reminiscences is still one of my all-time favorites." -Kenneth L. Fisher Forbes First published in 1923, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is the fictionalized biography of Jesse Livermore, one of the greatest speculators ever. Reminiscences remains the most widely read, highly recommended investment book ever written. Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture Volume 1 [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Frank Buschmann / Regine Meunier 出版社: Wiley 1996 - 8
Pattern-oriented software architecture is a new approach to software development. This book represents the progression and evolution of the pattern approach into a system of patterns capable of describing and documenting large-scale applications. A pattern system provides, on one level, a pool of proven solutions to many recurring design problems. On another it shows how to combine individual patterns into heterogeneous structures and as such it can be used to facilitate a constructive development of software systems. Uniquely, the patterns that are presented in this book span several levels of abstraction, from high-level architectural patterns and medium-level design patterns to low-level idioms. The intention of, and motivation for, this book is to support both novices and experts in software development. Novices will gain from the experience inherent in pattern descriptions and experts will hopefully make use of, add to, extend and modify patterns to tailor them to their own needs. None of the pattern descriptions are cast in stone and, just as they are borne from experience, it is expected that further use will feed in and refine individual patterns and produce an evolving system of patterns.

Algorithmic Trading [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Ernie Chan 出版社: Wiley 2013 - 5
Praise for Algorithmic Trading: "Algorithmic Trading is an insightful book on quantitative trading written by a seasoned practitioner. What sets this book apart from many others in the space is the emphasis on real examples as opposed to just theory. Concepts are not only described, they are brought to life with actual trading strategies, which give the reader insight into how and why each strategy was developed, how it was implemented, and even how it was coded. This book is a valuable resource for anyone looking to create their own systematic trading strategies and those involved in manager selection, where the knowledge contained in this book will lead to a more informed and nuanced conversation with managers." (Daren Smith, CFA, CAIA, FSA, Managing Director, Manager Selection & Portfolio Construction, University of Toronto Asset Management). "Using an excellent selection of mean reversion and momentum strategies, Ernie explains the rationale behind each one, shows how to test it, how to improve it, and discusses implementation issues. His book is a careful, detailed exposition of the scientific method applied to strategy development. For serious retail traders, I know of no other book that provides this range of examples and level of detail. His discussions of how regime changes affect strategies, and of risk management, are invaluable bonuses." (Roger Hunter, Mathematician and Algorithmic Trader).

Lecturing Birds on Flying [图书] 豆瓣
作者: Pablo Triana 出版社: Wiley 2009 - 6
An intriguing look at how financial models have repeatedly failed our markets, including now Leading and contrarian thinkers have been talking for years about the conflicts between theoretical and real finance. Nassim Taleb first addressed the issue in his technical treatise on options, Dynamic Hedging. Now, in Lecturing Birds on Flying, Pablo Triana moves the conversation to a narrative that anyone can follow, and explains how it is that theoretical finance can fail dramatically in the real world. The heart of the book, though, isn't about technicalities, but instead explores how widely accepted theories that are applied daily cause our world real harm. Many times, it's the quantitative models that hedge funds and investment banks use (and regulators and rating agencies embrace) that lead to market implosions. These so-called models end up offering false guidance and misplaced certainty, and sanction unsavory behavior. In fact, these models were largely responsible for the stock market crash of 1987, the LTCM crisis of 1998, the credit crisis of 2008, and many other blow-ups big and small. Pablo Triana has been writing about the limits of these types of mathematics for several years; now he reveals exactly what this means for our markets and why blind self-enslavement to quantitative dictums puts us at great peril. Pablo Triana (New York, NY, and Madrid, Spain) has successful derivatives experience at all levels: trading floor, professor, consultant, and author. He is a frequent contributor to business publications, including the Financial Times, Forbes.com, Breakingviews, and Risk magazine, among others. His prior book is Corporate Derivatives. Triana holds a master of science from New York University, Stern and an MA from American University.
Fooling Some of the People All of the Time, A Long Short Story, Updated with New Epilogue [图书] 豆瓣 开放图书馆
作者: David Einhorn 出版社: Wiley 2010 其它标题: Fooling some of the people all of the time
A rare look inside the world of activist hedge funds from one of this country's top investors In 2002, David Einhorn, the President of Greenlight Capital, gave a speech at a charity investment conference and was asked to share his best investment idea. He described his reasons why Greenlight had sold short the shares of Allied Capital, a leader in the private finance industry. What followed was a firestorm of controversy. Allied responded with a Washington, D.C. style spin-job-attacking Einhorn and disseminating half-truths and outright lies. Undeterred by the spin-job and lies, Greenlight continued its research after the speech and discovered Allied's behavior was far worse than Einhorn ever suspected. "Fooling Some of the People All of the Time" is the gripping chronicle of this saga, and this edition contains all new updates from the author. Page by page, it delves deep inside Wall Street, showing how the $6 billion hedge fund Greenlight Capital conducts its investment research and detailing the maneuvers of an unscrupulous company. Along the way, you'll witness feckless regulators, compromised politicians, and the barricades our capital markets have erected against exposing misconduct from important Wall Street customers. Goes behind the scenes to detail the truth about investing, short selling, and the politics of business Shows the failings of Wall Street: its investment banks, analysts, journalists, and especially our government regulators Offers insights into the battles surrounding hedge funds Reveals the immense difficulties that prevent the government from sanctioning politically connected companies At its most basic level, Allied Capital is the story of Wall Street at its worst. But the story is much bigger than one little-known company. "Fooling Some of the People All of the Time "is an important call for effective law enforcement, free speech, and fair play.
