他曾历经悲剧，一周内失去两个孩子，以及婚姻破裂。他的性格也不理想，但却是个才华洋溢的音乐家。他曾写道：“无法因优雅的线条，和谐的色彩和一系列美丽的和弦而感到完全满意的艺术家，就不能了解音乐的艺术。”这话在今天已不适用。他被称为法国的门德尔松，一个从未发挥出他的天才的作曲家，巧妙但并不热情，优雅而不激烈，机智但不富于灵气，一个完美主义者，但却不是激性的完美主义者。
圣-桑共作有三首小提琴协奏曲，均题献给杰出的西班牙小提琴家萨拉萨蒂。第三首以其优美的旋律、严密的结构和生动的音乐形象受到人们的喜爱，是小提琴乐库中的重要文献之一。　圣-桑b小调《第三小提琴协奏曲》，是世界著名协奏曲。全曲共分三个乐章。
第一乐章，第一乐章中的第一主题富于戏剧性；第二主题较柔和。音乐在发展过程中逐渐加强力度，以第一主题的形象作为结束。
第二乐章是一首优美的船歌，平稳的伴奏描绘出平静的水面，小提琴唱出感人的歌调，每一句结束时，长笛与双簧管补充以柔和的琶音进行，仿佛水面上泛起的涟漪。中段出现另一旋律，与乐队结合，宛若轻舟荡漾。结束时小提琴的泛音和木管的琶音显得晶莹可爱。
第三乐章以一长段坚决有力的引子开始，然后是活泼热情的回旋曲主题，与几个插段交替出现，自由地变化发展。乐队尾声的音响极为洪亮、华丽。

Mezzo star Elina Garancac in a programme of Schumann and Brahms, the Latvian singer's first solo recital album devoted exclusively to the Lied genre, choosing works that she's been performing live on stage for many years, documenting personal interpretations of the classics. Garanca is accompanied on this album by Scottish pianist Malcolm Martineau, a sensitive and experienced musician who has long been her trusted partner in exploring these emotional sound worlds.

This programme reflects the full flavour and richness of English music and the instrumental and vocal repertory it inspired in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The rhythmic impulse of this repertory sometimes making use of ostinato culminates in the grounds, jigs, contredanses and so on that were all the rage at the time and led to the publication of John Playford's collection The English Dancing Master in 1651. Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, showing their familiarity with early sources from England, Scotland and Ireland, also emphasise the melodic aspect of these dances, which in the course of time became sung airs the soprano Fiona McGown and the baritone Enea Sorini complete a colourful instrumentarium. Finally, the light-hearted dimension of entertainment is present everywhere in this repertory, which was popular in the sense that it was universally practised at the time, achieving a fame that spread far beyond the British Isles.
