The Dutch and English East India Companies were formidable organizations that were gifted with expansive powers that allowed them to conduct diplomacy, wage war and seize territorial possessions. But they did not move into an empty arena in which they were free to deploy these powers without resistance. Early modern Asia stood at the center of the global economy and was home to powerful states and sprawling commercial networks. The companies may have been global enterprises, but they operated in a globalized region in which they encountered a range of formidable competitors. Ethnic Chrysalis is the first book in English to cover the early modern history of the Orochen, an ethnic group that has for centuries inhabited areas now belonging to the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. The Qing dynasty (1644–1911) was a formative period for Orochen identity, and its actions preserved the Orochen as a separate ethnic group. While incorporating the Orochen into the imperial political domain through military conscription and compulsory resource extraction, the Qing government created two Orochen subgroups that experienced disparate levels of social and economic autonomy. The use of “Orochen” as an official modifier by Qing officials forms an early layer of the chrysalis that embodies various senses of ethnic identity for people who have been identified, or self‐identified, as Orochen. Since the Qing, the Orochen have continued to cherish the perception that their Qing‐period ancestors were key players in the defense and economy of northeast China. Tracing the evolution of Qing policies toward the Orochen along the Chinese–Russian borderland, Loretta Kim examines how the impact of political organization in one era can endure in a group’s social and cultural values.

《崇祯历书》是明朝政府组织、来华耶稣会士参与编纂的靠前部系统介绍西方天文学的大型科技古籍，抢先发售向中国介绍了西方自古希腊以来在天文学方面所取得的成果，尤其包括第谷、哥白尼、开普勒和伽利略等近代天文学开创者们的成果，是中西科学交流目前的一部经典性著作，同时也是推动中国科学近代化起步的一部关键性著作，是当代研究中国科技史、中西科技与文化交流史、中国天主教史的重要原始文献。然而，由于全书不同部分在明末的编写时间不一，入清之后又屡经修改和重编，存世的早期版本一方面较为稀见，另一方面彼此差异甚大。实现对该书的通校，一方面可以让我们了解该书在明末的原貌，另一方面则可以揭示该书在清初的内容变化，从而为现代研究者提供一份而容易获得的版本，具有重要的学术价值。对该书进行通校，这在学术界还是靠前次，具有创新性。

武英殿修书处是清朝的中央刻书机构，于康熙十九年（1680）十一月设立，后随清王朝覆亡而消失，延续了二百三十二年。武英殿修书处隶属内务府，专门为皇室服务，人员众多，除了技术高超的刻工，不乏诸多翰林和位高权重的大臣。这保证了武英殿所刻书在内容与装帧上都堪称精品。乾隆四年刊刻的《十三经注疏》便是其代表作之一。清乾隆皇帝有感于《十三经注疏》“岁月经久，梨枣日就漫漶”，敕其弟弘昼为监理，鄂尔泰、张廷玉为总阅，张照、方苞等为总裁，以明北监本《十三经注疏》为底本，重加校勘、雕版。后世称为武英殿《十三经注疏》。
武英殿《十三经注疏》计三百四十七卷，其中《周易注疏》十四卷、《尚书注疏》十九卷、《毛诗注疏》三十卷、《周礼注疏》四十二卷、《仪礼注疏》十七卷、《礼记注疏》六十三卷、《春秋左传注疏》六十卷、《春秋公羊传注疏》二十八卷、《春秋谷梁传注疏》二十卷、《论语注疏》二十卷、《孝经注疏》九卷、《尔雅注疏》十一卷、《孟子注疏》十四卷。每书涵括经、注、音义、疏四部分，均施句读，卷末亦多附考证。
其特色足以从五个方面述之：一，武英殿本是历史上独一的经、注、疏、释文四者俱全的《十三经注疏》刻本。二，武英殿本校勘认真，改正了以往不少错误，是错误较少的一个版本。三，武英殿本首次为《十三经注疏》全文施加断句。四，武英殿本各卷末附有“考证”，在十三经注疏刊刻史上应当是首开其例。五，武英殿本刊刻精工，为清内府刻本的代表之一。
武英殿《十三经注疏》刊刻之后，于时流传未广。至同治十年，广东书局始据以重刊，至今则已留存不丰。当今学术昌盛，我社择其原刻，将其影印，再彰其徽，以为学术研究添薪加柴。

沈燮元，1924年生，版本目录学家，南京图书馆研究馆员，从事古籍整理、研究与保护工作六十余年。具有丰富的古籍保护从业经验，成就斐然，退而不休，以古籍整理为终生事业，对南京图书馆乃至全国古籍保护工作作出了突出贡献，在古籍版本研究领域具有较大的影响和权威。此次汇集其文章，编为一辑，既是对其一生著述的总结，也可对从事古籍工作的同行提供很好的借鉴。

Jerry Norman's Comprehensive Manchu-English Dictionary, a substantial revision and enlargement of his Concise Manchu-English Lexicon of 1978, now long out of print, is poised to become the standard English-language resource on the Manchu language. As the dynastic language of the Qing dynasty (1644--1911), Manchu was used in official documents and was also the vehicle for an enormous translation literature, mostly from the Chinese. The new Dictionary, based exclusively on Qing sources, retains all of the information from the earlier Lexicon, but also includes hundreds of additional entries cited from original Manchu texts, enhanced cross-references, and an entirely new introduction on Manchu pronunciation and script. All content from the earlier publication has also been verified. This final book from the preeminent Manchu linguist in the English-speaking world is a reference work that not only updates Norman's earlier scholarship but also summarizes his decades of study of the Manchu language. The Dictionary, which represents a significant scholarly contribution to the field of Inner Asian studies and to all students and scholars of Manchu and other Tungusic and related languages around the world, will become a major tool for archival research on Chinese late imperial period history and government.

In Reshaping the Frontier Landscape: Dongchuan in Eighteenth-century Southwest China, Fei HUANG examines the process of reshaping the landscape of Dongchuan, a remote frontier city in Southwest China in the eighteenth century. Rich copper deposits transformed Dongchuan into one of the key outposts of the Qing dynasty, a nexus of encounters between various groups competing for power and space. The frontier landscape bears silent witness to the changes in its people’s daily lives and in their memories and imaginations. The literati, officials, itinerant merchants, commoners and the indigenous people who lived there shaped and reshaped the local landscape by their physical efforts and cultural representations. This book demonstrates how multiple landscape experiences developed among various people in dependencies, conflicts and negotiations in the imperial frontier.

Long before London and New York rose to international prominence, a trading route was discovered between Spanish America and China that ushered in a new era of globalization. The Ruta de la Plata or "Silver Way" catalyzed economic and cultural exchange, built the foundations for the first global currency, and led to the rise of the first "world city." And yet, for all its importance, the Silver Way is too often neglected in conventional narratives on the birth of globalization. Citizenship is at the heart of our contemporary world but it is a particular vision of national citizenship forged in the French Revolution. In Citizens without Nations, Maarten Prak recovers the much longer tradition of urban citizenship across the medieval and early modern world. Ranging from Europe and the American colonies to China and the Middle East, he reveals how the role of 'ordinary people' in urban politics has been systematically underestimated and how civic institutions such as neighbourhood associations, craft guilds, confraternities and civic militias helped shape local and state politics. By destroying this local form of citizenship, the French Revolution initially made Europe less, rather than more democratic. Understanding citizenship's longer-term history allows us to change the way we conceive of its future, rethink what it is that makes some societies more successful than others, and whether there are fundamental differences between European and non-European societies.

Prior to the nineteenth century, the West occupied an anomalous space in the Chinese imagination, populated by untamable barbarians and unearthly immortals. First-hand accounts and correspondence from Qing envoys and diplomats to Europe unraveled that perception. In this path-breaking study, Jenny Huangfu Day interweaves the history of Qing legation-building with the personal stories of China's first official travelers, envoys and diplomats to Europe. She explores how diplomat-travelers navigated the conceptual and physical space of a land virtually unmapped in the Chinese intellectual tradition and created a new information order. The Mongol conquest of north China between 1211 and 1234 inflicted terrible wartime destruction, wiping out more than one-third of the population and dismantling the existing social order. In the Wake of the Mongols recounts the riveting story of how northern Chinese men and women adapted to these trying circumstances and interacted with their alien Mongol conquerors to create a drastically new social order. To construct this story, the book uses a previously unknown source of inscriptions recorded on stone tablets.

How did American schoolchildren, French philosophers, Russian Sinologists, Dutch merchants, and British lawyers imagine China and Chinese law? What happened when agents of presumably dominant Western empires had to endure the humiliations and anxieties of maintaining a profitable but precarious relationship with China? In Chinese Law in Imperial Eyes, Li Chen provides a richly textured analysis of these related issues and their intersection with law, culture, and politics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Using a wide array of sources, Chen's study focuses on the power dynamics of Sino-Western relations during the formative century before the First Opium War (1839-1842). He highlights the centrality of law to modern imperial ideology and politics and brings new insight to the origins of comparative Chinese law in the West, the First Opium War, and foreign extraterritoriality in China. The shifting balance of economic and political power formed and transformed knowledge of China and Chinese law in different contact zones. Chen argues that recovering the variegated and contradictory roles of Chinese law in Western "modernization" helps provincialize the subsequent Euro-Americentric discourse of global modernity.
Chen draws attention to important yet underanalyzed sites in which imperial sovereignty, national identity, cultural tradition, or international law and order were defined and restructured. His valuable case studies show how constructed differences between societies were hardened into cultural or racial boundaries and then politicized to rationalize international conflicts and hierarchy.

Books of Fate and Popular Culture in Early China is a comprehensive introduction to the manuscripts known as daybooks, examples of which have been found in Warring States, Qin, and Han tombs (453 BCE–220 CE). Their main content concerns hemerology, or “knowledge of good and bad days.” Daybooks reveal the place of hemerology in daily life and are invaluable sources for the study of popular culture.
Eleven scholars have contributed chapters examining the daybooks from different perspectives, detailing their significance as manuscript-objects intended for everyday use and showing their connection to almanacs still popular in Chinese communities today as well as to hemerological literature in medieval Europe and ancient Babylon.
