Do The Pains of Being Pure At Heart belong? After garnering widespread acclaim for their out-of-nowhere self-titled 2009 Slumberland debut, have The Pains made the kind of record that will matter to the kind of people to whom records still matter? From the opening explosions of electric guitar on "Belong" ("We don't") and the sumptuously synthetic dance pop perfection of "The Body," to the prom-in-heaven chorus of "Even in Dreams" and the closing moments of the uncommonly sincere and affecting "Strange" (". . .and dreams can still come true"), the answer is an unqualified, resounding (and damn good sounding): "Yes." Bellingham, WA, indie pop quartet Death Cab for Cutie began in 1997 as the solo project of singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard, who previously recorded under the name All-Time Quarterback. The underground success of the cassette You Can Play These Songs' Chords inspired Gibbard to recruit a full-time band including guitarist/organist Christopher Walla (who recorded the early DCFC sessions as well), bassist Nick Harmer, and drummer Nathan Good, and in the summer of 1998, Death Cab for Cutie issued their debut LP, Something About Airplanes, to much acclaim from indie circles. Just prior to completion of the 2000 follow-up We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, Good left the group and was replaced by drummer Michael Schorr. In fall 2000, the band released the Forbidden Love EP. A solid selection of new cuts were found on The Photo Album the next year. In 2003, Eureka Farm's Jason McGerr joined the group and the band's stunning fourth album Transatlanticism appeared in October. While touring in support of that album in spring 2004, Death Cab For Cutie recorded seven brand new tracks. The John Byrd E.P., which was named for the band's touring sound engineer John Byrd, was issued on Barsuk in March 2005. After a lengthy courtship with Barsuk, the group inked a deal with Atlantic and released their label debut, Plans, in August of 2005. It sold nearly 90,000 copies during its first week of release, entering the US album chart at number four.

An Awesome Wave is the debut studio album by English indie rock band alt-J, released on 25 May 2012 by Infectious Records. The album includes the singles "Matilda"/"Fitzpleasure", "Breezeblocks" and "Tessellate". It peaked at number thirteen on the UK Albums Chart, and also charted in Belgium, France, Netherlands and Switzerland. An Awesome Wave won the 2012 British Barclaycard Mercury Prize, and in 2013 was named Album of the Year at the Ivor Novello Awards.

Ragged Wood is unassuming roots-rock recorded in the Sub Pop way. Now that Band of Horses can be found in car commercials, Sub Pop is prepping the next licensing bonanza. There's something more traditional, and purportedly authentic, about Ragged Wood, which is a nicer way of saying that the songs are less gripping than Everything All the Time. When they're not sounding like Band of Horses, the vocal and songwriting approach would fit wonderfully on the interminable second half of It Still Moves, where absolutely nothing grabs your attention. This seems like one of the few times that an independent label has pigeon-holed a band's sound. On the flip side, this album will be a precursor to financial success for the band. For many, this is a niche of music that's only now pouring itself into mainstream. For me (and probably most of the RYM community), there's just so far where this sound can go in the 00s, and it was done already over the past few years.

Trouble Will Find Me is The National s highly anticipated sixth album. Formed in 1999, the Ohio-raised, Brooklyn- based band consists of vocalist Matt Berninger fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). The band s previous 4AD release, High Violet (May 2010), was met with critical acclaim.

While still staying true to their origins this album demonstrates maturity as a band. Howl infuses blues, country, and gospel throughout, stemming from their love of Americana less apparent in their 2001 and 2003 releases.
An extended version of the song "Howl" (which runs 6:12, as opposed to the 4:20 length of the album version) appears on the soundtrack to the 2007 film Southland Tales.

Illinois is Stevens' second based on a U.S. state—part of a planned series of fifty that began with the 2003 album Michigan that Stevens has since acknowledged was a gag.

The Raveonettes fourth album, In and Out of Control, marks another change in direction for the band, though it's much less noticeable than the shift between the glossy, overproduced Pretty in Black and the raw, noisy, and self-produced Lust Lust Lust. This time out, the duo of Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner decided to record in a studio again, and enlisted the production and songwriting skills of Thomas Troelsen, who's worked with a diverse roster of artists that ranges from Junior Senior to Aqua, to his own excellent groups Private and Superheroes. Anyone fearing a return to the slick sounds that almost ruined the band will be glad to know that while there is more variety and a definite pop feel to the album, there is also plenty of noise and raw power to go around. The subject matter of the lyrics is totally Raveonettes too, touching on "suicide," rape, sadistic girls, heartbreak -- all providing the requisite levels of general malevolence one would expect. What the band and Troelsen do on the album is take the basic noise-plus-melody template that forms the band's core and give it a tweak here and there. Some sunny glockenspiel on "Last Dance," some electronic sound manipulation on "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed"), and clunky new wave drums on "Breaking into Cars" are some of the touches that brighten things up without diluting the band's intrinsic strengths. In general, the tightly arranged songs and use of different sounds from song to song make it perhaps the most listenable album of their career. It has some of their hookiest songs ("Last Dance," "Suicide," "Bang!"), some of their most ferocious sounding songs ("Break Up Girls!") and their toughest ("Boys Who Rape"), a couple of very pretty ballads ("Oh, I Buried You Today" and "Wine"), and no missteps. Thanks to the production, the performances, and the songs, the Raveonettes have delivered on the renewed promise of Lust Lust Lust and made a very good, almost great, noise-pop album.

The second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. With string and orchestral arrangements by two of the band members, "Neon Bible" is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. Quiet rumbles and loud rumbles. But mostly just eleven songs that the band thinks are really good.

Beat the Devil's Tattoo is the upcoming sixth album by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, set for release on March 8, 2010 in Europe and on March 9, 2010 in North America. It is the first full-length on the band's own Abstract Dragon label, in partnership with Vagrant Records and Cooperative Music Group.

The third studio album by Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys, as yet unnamed, will mark the band's first full length LP release since 2007's Favourite Worst Nightmare. The album will be released in the UK on 24 August 2009, following opening release in Japan on 19 August
