2022年6月17日 评论 a review of 恐怖角 - I have never read Nietzsche, but I have a feeling that this draws heavily from it. Even references the "God is dead" bit. I know Nietzsche wrote something about becoming a superman, and I think this has relevance too. The movie wears religious symbolism on its sleeve. It's essentially about sin and punishment. Max Cady is an unstoppable force of nature, practically inhuman. Originally a representative of the perceived lowest class of people ("white trash"), he ascends to a higher nature. His goal seems to be, more so than revenge, to make the protagonist admit his sins and repent. In essence, Max plays the role of a God. A God from man. Perhaps this is where the Nietzschean parallel comes into play, but like I said, I have no idea, for I haven't read Nietzsche. What I find interesting is how an entire seemingly complex personality, with convincing views and reflections, appreciation of arts and philosophy, is completely subservient to this goal of revenge. It's actually unintentionally (probably) deconstructive in a nihilistic sense. Because it deals with some seriously important concepts, but renders them all practically pointless, since they can be interpreted to match a simple and unethical goal.

2022年6月7日 评论 a review of 满城尽带黄金甲 - I think Zhang Yimou's unofficial (to my knowledge) wuxia trilogy, to which I include Hero, House of Flying Daggers and this, could also be called something like a rebellion trilogy. Because each one of these films focuses on individuals conspiring to overthrow the government. And while I rewatch Hero regularly, I've not revisited the other two in years. Looking at Curse of the Golden Flower now, I find the main themes to be: family and order. I think this is a sort of deconstruction of Confucianism. One of the core ideas of Confucianism is that a country should be run like a family, where the ruler is a patriarch, and those of lower rank should respect him as an elder, whereas he, being a patriarch, is supposed to take good care of them. Now, I'm no Confucianist, nor am I an expert on the subject. But I think the scene early on, where the whole family is sitting at the table, is the key scene in the movie, and probably sets up the entire Confucian basis here. Everything must follow the natural law, the emperor says. After the failure of the revolt, the family (or rather its remains) gather at the table yet again. And again the same ideas are being reinforced, but now in a different context. I think this royal family is supposed to represent the microcosm of the state. And the movie conveys the absurdity of treating a country like a family. Either that or the movie actually is Confucian and represents what happens when a family is run incorrectly. But this latter interpretation seems a little narrow-minded to me. Because it ignores the complexity that the hierarchy and power introduce to the situation. I also find it interesting how Hero tackled Daoist ideas, while this tackles Confucianist ones. Daoism and Confucianism are very different, even antithetical to each other in many aspects. Yet for centuries there have been continuous attempts at syncretizing the two. If I were to attempt to draw out some kind of narrative between the two films, I'd say there's probably an implication that no single ideology can be applied to a state in order to make it proper and just. But this sounds a little too Anarchist to be coming from a mainstream state-funded Chinese movie, so I dunno. All stated here is purely an interpretation.

2022年5月15日 评论 a review of 爱尔兰人 - Repeating patterns sometimes recontextualize actions, other times reveal hidden meaning or tap into the repressed emotions of the characters. In a fatalistic manner the end and the beginning are intertwined from the very start. Character introductions feature statements about their deaths in the form of cold, lifeless, objective facts, which contrast wildly with the energetic style, reminiscent of the previous De Niro-Scorsese flicks. Except here the style gradually winds down, giving way for deafening silence and an increasing amount of still and longer shots. In the old age all that's left are the ghosts of the past. And their presences become that much more ubiquitous, almost as if to submerge the protagonist's little world in them.

2022年4月12日 评论 a review of 千钧一发 - I had recently wrote a short story about a man trying to escape Earth. Currently I'm writing a story about a man zealously committed to a specific goal and the idea associated with it. Today I saw this movie mentioned in a video, and it immediately brought up memories of the first time I watched it. I felt something at the time, which I couldn't quite articulate in words. Gattaca appeared to me as a motivational sort of movie, but the way it tackled the subject matter was so different from other movies of this sort. Seeing how I've not felt motivated in god knows how long, in addition to the aforementioned factors, I thought there was no better time for me to rewatch it and this time formulate my thoughts on it. By "motivational movie" I meant those movies that portray their protagonists as striving towards a certain goal, which seems impossible, but through the sheer power of human will they manage to achieve it. Usually it's something basic like winning in a tournament of some kind. In these movies the determination and the strength that allow the protagonist to achieve their goals are usually portrayed as something that can be summoned. As this brute force that helps you get through immeasurable tortures on your path to greatness. It always comes off as something violent and aggressive. Gattaca is different. The "human will" here always appeared to me as rather gentle and sophisticated. The goal is poetic and wondrous: a desire to face the limitless unknown (of which the ocean is a great metaphor). The victory is bittersweet, not triumphant. I think, what we're witnessing here is not life being transformed by a push, fuelled by a summoned force of motivation. We're seeing motivation as identity. Something that isn't codified in genes, yet such an essential part of this human being that you'd swear it's imprinted in their blood. We're seeing a complete sacrifice of a given life for the sake of creating one that would match the inner being of this individual. The last line "I'm going home" is very indicative of this. He is not of this world. And this exceptionalism wasn't given to him by his genes. Ironically, this "inferior" man turns out to be special precisely because he transcends biological conditions. His personality is so dominant that it literally manifests in physicality. I think, this is why this story doesn't feel like that of an aggressive raw struggle. This is why it's gentle and poetic. This is not a story of a man who's out to conquer. This is a story of a man who's just trying to be himself. It's not that he chooses to become an astronaut. He has no choice. He is an astronaut. This is why the victory is not triumphant. He doesn't transition into a new level of being, he continues being himself, it's the reality around him that changes to match his already ascendant being. The first time I saw this movie, I was ill, seriously ill. I didn't think I'd make it, but I did. But the illness hasn't gone away, simply subsided, became a permanent condition, an omnipresent burden. Not bad enough to be a disability, not good enough to allow an unimpeded lifestyle. I have to live with it now, some days are better than others. Only now in retrospect I'm starting to understand the significance of this movie in my life. I may not be an exceptional person like the protagonist here, but I have something in common with him. I also have no choice. I also haven't saved anything for the swim back. I think that's precisely the point. It's not about victory, it's about living out your true identity against all odds.

2022年4月6日 评论 a review of 潜行者 - About two or three months ago I randomly remembered a quote from Stalker and realized that it was a quote from Laozi. I've been meaning to rewatch it since. I think I had seen Stalker twice before. Both times when I was an atheist. But now viewing the movie through a Daoist lense made me realize how essential the religious/spiritual side is to the movie. To the point where I can now say that I had never really understood what the movie was about before. I used to read the surface, but failed to dig deep. The main idea behind the film is the conflicting relationship between art, science and mysticism. Especially the inability of the former two to embrace the latter. The writer and the professor feel incomplete, and in their search of self-realization they decide to travel to the Zone. A place formed by something that fell out of the sky (obvious implication of the Divine). While I think the movie can be viewed through the lens of any religion, as long as it's the mystical approach and not fundamentalist, it lends itself best to the Daoist interpretation. One of the major concepts here is the deconstruction of desire. The writer questions its nature in the very beginning. The stalker recites a poem about the inability of the fulfillment of desires to bring contentment. The main object of interest of those who travel to the zone is the room that fulfills your desires. And yet the notion that this brings happiness is questioned. The stalker derives happiness from helping others with what he thinks is the attainment of happiness (through the fulfillment of desires), while himself having no desires. Why does he help them to essentially continue the self-deception? I think it's because a sage does not impose. He can help them get inside the zone, but he can't tell them what would make them happy. I think he also just wants them to encounter the Divine, regardless of their motivations (well as long as they're non-hostile). Water is a major motif in this movie, as it is in Daoism. Laozi teaches to be like water. To be still and soft and flexible. Not to resist, but instead to let through. Water dwells in low places. A sage must imitate water. In Wang Bi's terminology, move towards the Wu, the negative. The stalker's life is plagued with suffering. And thus he is blessed. The Zone punishes by giving. Rewards by taking. The stalker's teacher, the Porcupine, was punished with great wealth. The Stalker notes how the Zone's decisions on who to kill and who to spare have nothing to do with the concepts of good and evil. He also conveys that the Zone merely reflects the consciousness of the people that enter it. Thus it is clear that malicious intentions destroy their own hosts. This explains the tanks. This also explains why the Stalker told the writer to drop his gun. "Good weapons are instruments of fear; all creatures hate them. Therefore followers of Dao never use them." (Laozi, Feng & English translation). They refer to the Zone as the quietest place. In Daoism stillness and silence are considered among the most important conditions for a sage to strive for. Most importantly, I think this movie has just helped me to solve what I used to consider a paradox in Daoism. In Daoism empathy is considered one of the three treasures, and yet there are situations when to prevent other people's suffering one must seemingly go against the concept of Wu Wei (effortless action/non-action). Perhaps it is not the job of a sage to prevent suffering. Because without suffering there is no place for empathy. Preventing suffering would then be preventing empathy, thus going against the nature of the Dao. In the end of the movie, the stalker's wife says "without the suffering there wouldn't be happiness or hope." This is very much in line with the concept of Yin and Yang (or the Hermetic law of opposites). Where one complements the other. I think I now better understand chapter 5 of Laozi: "the sage is not kind: People are straw dogs to him" (Addis & Lombardo). In other translations they use the words "ruthless" or "impartial". But I think "not kind" conveys better the inherent sadness that has to do with non-involvement. Because it is not kind to allow suffering to happen. I think the black dog that they encounter in the Zone must represent the recognition of suffering. It approaches the Stalker through the water and then follows him through the rest of the film. But, honestly, I'm not sure. One thing that's clear is that his daughter is presented as a religious figure, and a rather Christian one visually. But she is the child of the Zone. Through the Christian lens one might interpret this as a Jesus parallel. But I think there's also a place for the interpretation of her as the fruit of self-realization or awareness. She views the world the same way the others view the Zone. I think this is a signifier of enlightenment. The physical manifestation of all these concepts mentioned above. It makes sense for her to be a child, as childlike perspective is a valued concept in Daoism. In fact, the -zi in Laozi, while originally meant "master", in modern Chinese means "child", and has contributed significantly to the medieval developments in the Daoist philosophy.

While working at the National Film Board, Lipsett collected pieces of audio and pieced them together as a hobby. When his friends heard the product of this they suggested that he add images to it. This film is the result.
