2022年9月26日 评论 a review of 老去 - Starts off as a horror-thriller with a pretty simple concept, yet the delivery of it is still kept fresh and enigmatic, but at some point becomes this incredibly profound postmodernist piece on the nature of aging. It would be enough to just focus on the physical aspects of it, which would be fitting for the body-horror vibe this movie is going for, but Old is taking a deeper look at the mental growth, our acceptance of our own mortality, our relationship with the past and particularly our childhood. Shyamalan, as always, manages to find this island of beauty in the sea of horror, making the best moments of the film shine brighter than many peak scenes from his overall better movies. I would have to admit, this is probably one of Shyamalan's weakest works in his entire filmography, but the few magnificent scenes in it are some of the most remarkable achievements of his entire career.

2022年9月7日 评论 a review of 水中女妖 - Actually one of the most important movies ever made. A deconstructive fairytale that exists precisely within the contemporary socio-political landscape and deals with precisely questions regarding our interaction with culture and stories. It deliberately takes apart both classical and modern tropes and concepts, as well as the very modes of storytelling, thus transcending genres, centuries of various storytelling traditions and media by tapping into the potential of film as a combinative art form. This is seriously a work too genius for us common plebs. Even being a fan of Shyamalan, it took me years to truly understand and appreciate what he was going for with this. A true masterpiece.

2022年8月28日 评论 a review of 超人：钢铁之躯 - Most people's criticisms of this movie are so shallow. They're usually complaints about it not catering to their pre-established idea of Superman. And, like, who gives a shit? This is a movie, its own medium, its own story. Most of these people also expose their hypocrisy by not applying the same standards to Joker, which couldn't have been further distant from its source material. Man of Steel is a bad movie, but for none of the reasons they say it is. I once saw a video called "Does Call of Duty Believe in Anything?", and this movie kinda makes me ask the same question of Zack Snyder. He's often hailed as some sort of arthouse filmmaker in the field of blockbuster cinema. But, as an artist, what ideas does he express in his movies? His take on 300 (an already pretty ideologically-shady book) dumbs down any moral complexity that the source material had and doubles down on the black-and-white morality with the added original material. His adaptation of Watchmen puts the most right-wing objectivist character to the forefront and presents him as morally superior to the rest of them. And then there's Man of Steel: a movie about an illegal alien who embraces the American identity and fights his own people, all of whom happen to be evil and commit like fifty 9/11's in an hour. His adoptive father, who is supposed to embody the American spirit, is a man haunted by mistrust and paranoia. He teaches his adopted son to *not* help others in order to fulfill a greater destiny. Throughout the movie there are several chances for Superman to apprehend and disarm the aliens before they could cause any significant harm to the population, but he doesn't do that. Instead the movie gradually concludes with the message: "the only way to deal with evil is through murder". After which Superman willingly agrees to "help" the US army. I can't help but reminisce about Alan Moore's Marvelman/Miracleman, especially seeing as how this movie borrows a lot of visual cues from it. In that comic series the superheroes have dismantled the world governments and created an egalitarian utopia on Earth. Now, I'm not saying Superman should've done that within this movie, but making a deal with the US army sure doesn't seem like a step in this direction. Now let's come back to that question: does Zack Snyder believe in anything? Because, if he does, he sure seems like a libertarian right-winger. In his interviews he rejects the idea, claiming that he's a liberal. Though at one point he expressed the desire to adapt Ayn Rand's Fountainhead, he made it clear that for him this wasn't a political book. Well, what is it then, Zack? If you divorce the book from its core ideas, what will remain? And this is why I've been pondering this question. Zack Snyder doesn't seem like a guy who engages with ideas, which is something an artist should do. I've watched a few of his interviews, and he always talks about style and actions of the characters, but never about ideas, meanings, metaphors, symbolism. And when he attempts to, it sounds almost like he's making it up as he goes along or like he's repeating something he's heard from others without fully understanding what it means. For example, he called his Watchmen a deconstruction (because that's the first word anybody ever says about Watchmen), and Man of Steel a reconstruction. In which way is it a reconstruction when it defies so many of the core concepts of Superman? What is he reconstructing exactly? He never really explains that part. If the right-wing ideas that Man of Steel seems to express so boldly are actually not its ideas, then what ideas does it express? Does it say anything? Does it believe in anything? Zack Snyder is either a right-wing libertarian artist or a liberal basic bro who just has a talent in making things look pretty, and any semblance of complexity or artistry in his movies comes from the scripts (written by other people). If it's the former, then this movie is reprehensible. If the latter, it's another dumb blockbuster akin to the Avengers. Either way, Man of Steel is a movie that looks good, sounds good, has good performances, but has a big black void inside.

2022年8月24日 评论 a review of 十面埋伏 - In my Curse of the Golden Flower review I posited that perhaps Yimou's wuxia "trilogy" has an overarching message spanning all three movies, which implies that no single ideology can be applied to governance. Having rewatched House of Flying Daggers, I am convinced of this. In fact, I think this movie takes the idea further and applies it not just to the governance, but to life itself. This movie takes a more personal look at the lives of people who are directly involved in an ideological struggle. On one side we have a corrupt government, on the other side a guild of assassins that fight for liberation. Each group's HQ is represented by a ubiquitous monotone color: grey for the police headquarters and green for the rebels. Between the two locations is vast wilderness with a large variety of vivid colors. The movie is essentially saying that ideology consumes people. Real humanity and consequently real love exist out there in the area between ideologies. Furthermore, it is hinted that the two ideologies are not that different afterall. Both sides wear green uniforms (suggesting, well... uniformity), even though different shades of green. Both organizations ask their followers to make sacrifices for the supposed greater good. The leaders of both organizations are faceless and detached. There is one line of dialogue early in the movie, when Jin, Kaneshiro's character (a government official), tells Xiao Mei, Zhang Ziyi's character, "don't you know the rules?", and later the madam (a rebel) tells Xiao Mei "you know our rules", essentially the same phrase. Both phrases spoken when she is being told to do something she doesn't wanna do. Though snow at the end was a lucky accident during the production, it works really well to continue the color symbolism. Because in the end there's just two men fighting for the love of a woman, everything else disappears in white. He's no longer a county captain and she's no longer a radical assassin. The main characters transcend into the world of pure feelings, unburdened by loyalties, ideologies, beliefs. This is where that theme song starts to make a lot more sense: "A glance from her, the whole city falls. A second glance leaves the whole nation in ruins." There is a lot of visual storytelling in the movie. For example the echo game and the following fight in the beginning of the movie represent the first contact between two lovers in three years, thus being a sort of lovemaking. Another example is how during the first makeout session there is a shot from behind the trees that resembles the POV of somebody spying on the characters. Xiao Mei suddenly stops it, arguing she doesn't know him well enough. In the next scene we find out that Liu, Andy Lau's character, had caught up to them. Moments like these will be difficult to pick up on the first time around, but on repeated viewing they enrich the film with additional meaning. Though, beyond that, of course there's plenty of visual symbolism that has a more immediate impact: Xiao Mei splits the two daggers that are thrown at her in the final scene of the movie. This beautifully tragic metaphor showcases how her rejection of Liu leads her to stay with Jin, but it also kills her. In a way she brings death upon herself, but at the same time she didn't have much of a choice. Aside from all the symbolism, visual storytelling and hidden meanings, the movie also contains amazing fight choreography, gorgeous soundtrack, stellar performances and all the other traits of a masterpiece. Zhang Yimou proves again that he is one of the best film directors ever.

2022年8月21日 评论 a review of 探访惊魂 - You have to laugh to keep the deep darkies in a cave. I'm usually not a big fan of mixing comedy and horror, but somehow this movie manages to not only do that successfully, but also integrate the comedic parts thematically. It is one of the rare cases, where the two don't undermine, but complete each other. P.S. Breaking open a lock with a camera in first-person is a pure expression of cinematic essence.
