2022年12月7日 评论 a review of 斯巴达 - It still makes sense to me that I loved this movie as a teenager. And though I do not do now, it's still hard to let go of my admiration for its achievements. Conceived as an adaptation of an already problematic graphic novel, 300 only exacerbates its problems. The eponymous book, written and drawn by Frank Miller, is one of the most acclaimed comic books ever made. Despite its clear ahistorical bias towards the Spartans, it leaves enough room for the opposite interpretation. Frank Miller clearly understands (or, well... understood) that the source of evil is suffering, that morality and efficiency have little to do with each other, that political affiliations are a complicated matter and they don't necessarily reflect the feelings of the affiliates, and that there are other, more integral things that can bind people together. His Leonidas fought for democracy while clearly forbidding democracy in his own ranks, thus virtually admitting his hypocrisy. Spartans made homophobic remarks towards Athenians while clearly exhibiting homosexual tendencies themselves. They made fun of Arcadians' lack of skill, yet fight side by side with them. Poor Ephialtes was left a shred of dignity past his betrayal, not demonstrating any sign of hatred or greed, simply being an outsider with a hunger to belong. There was plenty of complexity in the original book that didn't make it into the film. Zack Snyder's version of the story removes a lot of that complexity and doubles down on moral duality. His objectivist take on 300 leaves us with very clear, very simple concepts: good Spartans protecting democracy, evil Persians trying to destroy it, vindictive Ephialtes betraying his kind out of greed, etc. But, as if that wasn't enough, he adds a bunch of pointless filler that is not only equally objectivist in nature, but also just repeats already pre-existing story details: corrupt politicians (repeating corrupt ephors), clumsy elephants (repeating clumsy rhinos), more strange soldiers from other parts of the empire, and so on, and so forth. Storywise, this movie adaptation is way inferior to the focused and almost minimalist in comparison book. The book created a lot of room for interpretation precisely because it didn't expand on a lot of the areas that the movie expands on. However, where Zack Snyder scores is in the visual department. I'll be honest, from the aesthetic standpoint, I consider this movie to be one of the most important mainstream Hollywood movies of the 2000s. The visual language Zack Snyder invents here had not been done before, definitely not to this degree, and it was a breath of fresh air among the stale shaky-cam montages that were passed off for fight scenes in Hollywood at the time. When it comes to the visual interpretation of the book, Zack Snyder just gets it. This movie looks like classicist paintings of ancient Greek motifs. And this follows not just through cinematography, lighting and color, but to the very character and costume designs. And yes, most of them are from the book, but this movie really does greatly expand on the number of weird creatures and soldier classes. The action scenes are actually well-choreographed, and the slow-mo is used to achieve the maximum impact effect. It is very easy for me to understand why an ignorant boy, such as my younger self, would fall in love with this movie. And I honestly still love parts of it to bits. And since the majority of this film stays very true to the source material, Zack Snyder's objectivist propaganda hasn't managed to taint the entire movie. This is easily Snyder's best, and I doubt he will ever eclipse it.

俄罗斯一直盛产美女，影片中的女主角们都十分养眼，Oksana Akinshina和永远的莉莉亚那个时候比只是成熟了许多，并没有太大的改变。
谁都曾经青春年少，电影中部分情节点出了人始终要成长，要为自己的将来负责。最后的歌曲就是整部电影想要表达的意境。

2022年10月29日 评论 a review of 贞子 - Ring always felt like a very organic product to come out of the late 90s Japan. It dealt with common (for the time) themes like technophobia, the substitution of the natural with the artificial and the search for the divine within this new technological landscape. It looked at child neglect/abuse through the lens of religious archetypes of motherhood and hereditary sin. I think Sadako attempted to redefine these themes for the current digital era. Instead of hereditary sin, we now face reincarnation. Instead of VHS tapes (an analogue object), we have the ubiquitous internet. Motherhood, which had been adopted by a previously neglectful [psychic] mother in Ring and a [again psychic] student of the kid's father in the sequel, is now imposed upon a complete stranger. And, unlike previous protagonists, this one doesn't manage to sustain the new role. I think the goal this time around was to come to terms with the rapid growth of population (or perhaps even the digital presence of that population which hadn't been so acutely experienced before) and the increasing devaluation/relativization of the few remaining traditional values. I think the movie attempts to find a connection where we usually wouldn't. A woman who is an orphan and has only her brother, whom she cares for more than anything else, exists outside of the traditional family hierarchy, and yet she has to be the one to adopt the maternal role. You'd think she has little to no relation to the little girl, and yet she does. I think there's a beautiful message there saying we're all like one big family, even if that doesn't appear this way at a first glance. However, this film feels much less organic than the first two. It almost feels like it was done for the sake of being done, not because it came as a genuine inspiration to the creators. As I mentioned above, the first two movies were very relevant for the time, almost necessitated by it. This one feels like it didn't need to exist. Artistically there's very little in common here with the old movies.

EDIT: Just realized that Sadako (貞子) in Japanese consists of the characters for "chastity" and "child", which implies immaculate conception and lands more credence to my reading of the movie.

丹妮（佛罗伦斯·珀 Florence Pugh 饰）的姐姐因为精神疾病而自杀，在死的时候还顺带着杀死了他们的双亲。这巨大的打击令丹妮患上了抑郁症。克里斯蒂安（杰克·莱诺 Jack Reynor 饰）是丹妮的男友，实际上，他早就决定和丹妮分手了，可是悲剧的发生和丹妮糟糕的状况让他不得不将自己的分手计划无限期的延后。
克里斯蒂安和同学佩勒（维尔赫尔姆·布洛姆根 Vilhelm Blomgren 饰）、马克（威尔·保尔特 Will Poulter 饰）、乔什（威廉·杰克森·哈珀 William Jackson Harper 饰）决定一起前往佩勒的故乡——一座位于瑞典的偏僻小村庄，那里古老的文化和祭祀活动将成为他们毕业论文的题材，在克里斯蒂安的邀请下，丹妮也加入了这趟旅途。
