这是去年2021年6月刚99岁去世的北京清华大学老教授何兆武先生的两卷口述回忆。
作者何兆武，来自西南联大，一生翻译卢梭、帕斯卡尔、康德、柏克、罗素，与哲人在一起，以历史学家的阅历，回眸百年来学人、文化的变迁。从民国到共和国，从个人、家庭到国家⋯⋯上学的西南联大是什么样的？上班的历史所、清华大学是什么样的？学生读什么？学者教什么？民国教育是什么样的？共和国的运动是什么样的？何兆武口述《上学记》《上班记》，是二十世纪中国读书人的心灵史。
上卷《上学记》（增订本）叙述的尽管只是1920 -1940年代末不足30年间他学生时期的陈年往事，却蕴含着一个饱经沧桑的老人对整个20世纪历史的反思。初版2006年在北京、台北出版后激起读者广泛共鸣。读者可以从这本书中获得丰富、鲜活的历史体验，特别是今天「上学者」和「治学者」，或可借此思考一下，学应该如何上、如何治。

Because of their spectacular, naturalistic pictures of plants and the human body, Leonhart Fuchs' "De historia stirpium" and Andreas Vesalius' "De humani corporis fabrica" are landmark publications in the history of the printed book. But as "Picturing the Book of Nature" makes clear, they do more than bear witness to the development of book publishing during the Renaissance and to the prominence attained by the fields of medical botany and anatomy in European medicine. Sachiko Kusukawa examines these texts, as well as Conrad Gessner's unpublished "Historia plantarum", and demonstrates how their illustrations were integral to the emergence of a new type of argument during this period - a visual argument for the scientific study of nature. Kusukawa begins with a survey of the technical, financial, artistic, and political conditions that governed the production of printed books during the Renaissance. It was during the first half of the sixteenth century that learned authors began using images in their research and writing, but because the technology was so new, there was a great deal of variety of thought - and often disagreement - about exactly what images could do. Kusukawa investigates the works of Fuchs, Gessner, and Vesalius in light of these debates, scrutinizing the scientists' treatment of illustrations and tracing their motivation for including them in their works. What results is a fascinating and original study of the visual dimension of scientific knowledge in the sixteenth century.

Building in China is about striking an architectural balance between the pull of monumental tradition and the push of technological novelty. Centering on the dynamic period of post-imperial and pre-Communist China, the book focuses on the building and city planning initiatives of Henry Murphy. A little-known American architect, Murphy ventured to China in 1914 to design a campus for the Yale-in-China program and found himself captivated by the question of how to preserve China's rich architectural traditions while also designing new buildings using up-to-date Western technologies. Murphy's buildings were compromises in a tumultuous society facing an uncertain future. Women who opt not to be mothers are frequently warned that they will regret their decision later in life, yet we rarely talk about the possibility that the opposite might also be true—that women who have children might regret it. Drawing on years of research interviewing women from a variety of socioeconomic, educational, and professional backgrounds, sociologist Orna Donath treats regret as a feminist issue: as regret marks the road not taken, we need to consider whether alternative paths for women currently are blocked off. She asks that we pay attention to what is forbidden by rules governing motherhood, time, and emotion, including the cultural assumption that motherhood is a “natural” role for women—for the sake of all women, not just those who regret becoming mothers.
