一九八○年代，台灣經濟起飛、社會快速轉型，人文精神與文化生活卻日益膚淺頹喪，《人間》雜誌秉持對弱勢群族、文化、環境與政經議題的關懷而創辦。作者蔡明德參與了《人間》草創至結束的歷程，透過鏡頭與回憶，重返「人間現場」──再現底層人民為生存所付出的代價、拉回台灣解嚴前夕的呼喊、揭露工商社會風光背後對環境與心靈造成的傷害。
