《老残游记》是刘鹗晚年写的一部小说，全书二十回，一九零三年发表于《绣像小说》半月刊，至十三回因故中止，后续载于《天津日日新闻》，成书于一九零六年。书中借老残的游历见闻，对当时吏治的黑暗痛加攻击。例如揭发了所谓“不要钱”的“清官”，其实是一些“急于做大官”（第六回）不惜杀民邀功、用人血染红顶子的刽子手。
《老残游记》原署鸿都百炼生著，作者真名刘鹗，字铁云，清末江苏丹徒人，生于一八五七年，卒于一九零九年。他出身于一个封建官僚的家庭，却无意于以科举博取功名，懂得算学、医药、治河等实际学问。曾先后在河道总督吴大澂、山东巡抚张曜处作幕宾，帮办治黄工程，得到很大的声誉。又曾向清廷建议借外资兴筑铁路、开采山西煤矿，终因不得志于清廷，去而经商，有过多次创办实业的计划，最后都归于失败。庚子（一九零零年）义和团事起，八国联军侵入北京，刘鹗向联军购得太仓储粟，设平粜局，以振北京饥困。一九零八年，清廷以私售仓粟罪加以逮捕，流放新疆，次年七月病死于迪化（即今乌鲁木齐）。
这个本子是以《天津日日新闻》本为依据，参校了《绣像小说》的连载本、亚东图书馆本、艺文书房本，文字、标点都作了一番订正。为了方便阅读，加了一些简单的注释。又有《二集》六回，我们据上海良友图书公司单行本，排作附录，没有加注。在校勘上，有各本俱误，我们据文意改动的个别地方，需要作一交代：（一）第十一回一一八页“取已陈之刍狗而卧其下，必眯”句，“眯”，《日日新闻》本作“眯”，他本作“昧”，据《庄子》本文改“眯”。（二）第十七回一八二页“却拿狼皮褥子替人瑞盖腿”句，“狼皮褥子”各本俱作“虎皮毯子”，与第十二、十六回所述情节不合，据前文改。（三）第十八回一八八页“则贾家之死不由月饼可知”句，“贾家”各本俱作“魏家”，据文意改。（四）第十九回一九四页“你却先到齐东村去”句，“村”各本俱作“庄”，与全书不一致，故改。此外，书中“张宫保”、“庄宫保”，“魏谦”、“魏诚”，但为一人而姓名错杂，我们即以《日日新闻》本初出为据，统一为“张宫保”、“魏谦”。
