When Lindsay Pitts and Clifford John Usher first met, their connection was instantaneous. That bond still fuels their art. As GEMS, they self-released the Medusa EP in 2013, a debut with a remarkably mature sound. On Medusa, Lindsay’s haunting and deeply emotive vocals provide the backbone for Clifford’s dark and dreamy production, balancing gauzy atmospherics with emotional heft. That mix finds new tension and release on GEMS’ first full-length album, Kill The One You Love. The record more deeply indulges in the group’s evocative shadow pop, influenced by R&B production and shoegaze. At the core of GEMS’ music is existential longing. Lindsay and Clifford try to capture the intangible and they arrive closest with Kill The One You Love. “Music is a never-ending process of learning and growing and reaching,” Clifford says. “Of stepping outside of what is familiar and moving into a place where there aren't answers.”
Since the project’s inception, GEMS have matched their visuals to their music, favoring grayscale imagery that’s equal parts elegance and sparsity (à la Antonioni). Kill The One You Love offers their sound as the true root of this aesthetic—stylistic restraint that, though stark, remains flush with emotion. The album opens in Art of Noise territory with “Blood Runs” and “w/o u,” unhurried mood-setters with a chill-out sense of liltingness and club-friendly low end. Songs like “Scars” and “Tangled Memories,” with their delayed chords, ethereal vocals, and clean guitar lines evoke early Cocteau Twins. “Soak,” “Heartbreaker,” and “White Light” integrate urgency and climax, reaching great heights with heavy, distorted guitar and vocal mutations. Lindsay’s lyrics wrestle throughout with the difficulties of being close to another. “Can you make me whole?,” she asks on “w/o u.” Between doubts and confirmations on “Soak,” she offers “I am your water to float in.” GEMS are searching for that ray of light in the darkness. Kill The One You Love is an album of hurt, longing, and the beauty found in that space between. It’s music for the heartbroken but hopeful.

Justin Vernon began recording as Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings and, to a certain extent, Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Pronounced 'bohn eevair', it is French for "good winter" which is spelled wrong deliberately. This debut CD is centered around Justin Vernon, who is the primary force behind Bon Iver, as he moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. From this solitary time emerged a bold, uninhibited new musical focus of all his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years into songs. This Side of Paradise is the second extended play by American singer and actress Hayley Kiyoko, released in February 3, 2015 through her independent label Rich Youth/Steel Wool Records. The entire album was produced by Kiyoko along with James Flannigan and is a pop and electronic music record. The EP was preceded by the release of the single "This Side of Paradise" in September 29, 2014.

The work of Illinois-born, Toronto-based artist Meg Remy, U.S. Girls has evolved in recent years from the coarse 4-track fidelity found on her early recordings to more luscious and unabashed works, packed with fiery pop sensibilities. Half Free is the next step in this impressive progression, an honest and lyrically jarring exploration of emotions, drenched in a bath of raw beats and loops that have become the hallmark of her work with producer and frequent collaborator Onakabazien. Other album guests include Slim Twig (DFA), Ben Cook (Fucked Up, Young Guv), Amanda Crist (Ice Cream) and Tony Price.
The second track to be heard from the album, ‘Woman's Work’, debuts online today, accompanied by another
hypnotic video directed and edited by Remy. Following up on the release of the mutant dub of 'Damn That Valley' earlier this year, 'Woman's Work' builds further anticipation and intrigue; Remy has delivered a nagging, arpeggio-laced stormer, picking away at the themes of beauty and neurosis, with a video that examines our collective paralysis in the face of ageing. Following hints over the weekend, Deerhunter have now announced details of their next album.
'Fading Frontier' is the indie rock group's seventh album and follows on from 2013's 'Monomania'. It will be released on October 16 via 4AD.
The Atlanta band, consisting of Bradford Cox, Moses Archuleta, Frankie Broyles, Josh McKay and Lockett Pundt, have also shared the lead track from the LP in the form of 'Snakeskin'. Watch the video for that song below.
Deerhunter will also play shows in the UK and Ireland during October and November, including dates in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Dublin, Leeds, Brighton and Glasgow. Tickets for those gigs go on sale on Friday (August 21).
Cox recently claimed during his set with side-project Atlas Sound at NXNE festival that the new Deerhunter album "sounds like INXS".
