Katie Crutchfield, aka Waxahatchee, will release her third LP Ivy Tripp on April 7 via her new home Merge (Wichita will oversee its international release). It follows 2013's Cerulean Salt.
Crutchfield produced the album with Kyle Gilbride and Keith Spencer (also of Crutchfield's sister Allison's band Swearin'), who also play on the album.
The album's title is “really just a term I made up for directionless-ness, specifically of the 20-something, 30-something, 40-something of today, lacking regard for the complaisant life path of our parents and grandparents," Crutchfield said in a press release. "I have thought of it like this: Cerulean Salt is a solid and Ivy Tripp is a gas.”
She added:
My life has changed a lot in the last two years, and it’s been hard for me to process my feelings other than by writing songs. I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming, or just being cognizant in moments of deep confusion or sadness, and learning to really feel emotions and to grow from that...
I heard someone say that you have to be the change you want to see. I just want to be the kind of musician I want to see in the world. I want to present myself in a way that reflects that.

Yowler is the latest solo effort by Maryn Jones, a musician based out of Columbus, OH. In January of 2014, we were serendipitously booked for a two-week tour with Saintseneca, a Columbus-based band in which Jones sings and plays various instruments. We were already in love with her songwriting for the Salinas Records pop-punk band, All Dogs, and we were excited to get to know her. The next two weeks of tour with Saintseneca formed some of the most meaningful friendships we have ever found in music. <3
Maryn Jones joins the DDW family with her debut release as Yowler, a collection of songs written over time and recorded living rooms and bedrooms in the winter of 2013/14 titled, 'The Offer'. The songs are mostly about sleeping and thinking about things you shouldn’t think about. Yowler - 'The Offer' will be out Tuesday, March 10th, 2015.

Self Defense Family are one of the most interesting bands in contemporary independent music. Self Defense– the simpler name they also often go by– are a musical collective formed in 2003 in Albany, New York and now spread across two US coasts and Europe. Their musical output is as varied as their curiosity and ambition. At first profoundly influenced by revolution summer and melodic Dischord bands, in recent years the band has grown into a new phase. This evolution has seen them explore post-hardcore territory also occupied by Lungfish and Wilderness, as well as delve into alt-country reminiscent of the Drive-By Truckers.
This EP is the first of two forthcoming duets records Iron Pier is releasing for the band. In both records, longtime 'family' member Caroline Corrigan takes the lead or shares vocal duties with usual family singer Patrick Kindlon. "You Are Beneath Her" consists of four songs sung by Corrigan; three songs taken from Self Defense's "You Are Beneath Me" sessions and one song re-recorded soon after. All four songs have been remastered in 2013.

Sophomore record Just Enough Hip To Be Woman is a bold step forward for Broncho. Though it certainly bears the hallmarks of their previous work "fuzzy, guitar driven rock - the production and energy of the record moves into decidedly sleeker and decidedly more new wave directions (think Cheap Trick meets the Drive soundtrack meets every great song from Fast Times at Ridgemont High meets the greatest after-hours party you've never been to. Tracks like Stay Loose, NC-17 and What are the kind of pop-rock that could have easily been beamed in from the same universe that gave rise to The Cars (or a looser version of The Strokes), while the album's first single, 'Class Historian' with its unstoppable do do do do vocal refrain is the kind of song that seems scientifically engineered to stick in your brain forever and is arguably best played loudly over a car stereo with the windows down and your long hair blowing in the breeze. Clocking in at just more than 30 minutes, the eleven tracks on the new record are a potent statement of intent: an effortless sounding rock record that dips its toe into a variety of different styles without every succumbing to any of them. Its a record that sounds like the summer. Or the future.

First proper full-length from Brooklyn quartet. GHASTLY CITY SLEEP is one of those bands where the timeless adage writing about music is like dancing about architecture comes to mind. It's fundamentally pointless, especially when it comes to a band like this. Reams of paper could be written up and they still wouldn't encapsulate the dense, lush, and often subtle textures that comprise this Brooklyn quartet's true sound. A precursory scan of Google results might produce comparisons to MOGWAI or a heavier RADIOHEAD, as if it were easy to pin down those bands in the first place...

"Don't You" is the debut album from Wet. The band is comprised of the band's songwriter/vocalist Kelly Zutrau (a Boston native), and multi-instrumentalists Joe Valle and Marty Sulkow. Wet met through mutual friends as college students in New York City in 2007. After a few years of informal collaboration, they declared their official musical intentions in the summer of 2012. After releasing a few songs on their own, including the acclaimed "Don't Wanna Be Your Girl," the band began attracting a diverse and loyal following. Their critically hailed debut EP "Wet" garnered industry-wide attention and paved the path for the album "Don t You".
Media tastemakers have reached a mutual consensus on the band's rapid rise, with PopCrush citing the the trio among the Best New Artists of 2015, Pandora forecasting them as an Artist To Watch in 2016, and Consequence Of Sound including their upcoming debut effort in their list as one of the 50 Most Anticipated Albums Of 2016. "Don t You" includes 11 tracks and was recorded in a rented house in the wooded confines of Hadley, Massachusetts.
Hailed for their boundless emotional pop well documented by the New York Times, Spin, the Guardian, NPR, and multiple other media outlets, reviews of Wet's previously released tracks have been greeted with a rousing response. "All in Vain" soared to #1 on Hype Machine and cracked the upper tier of the Spotify Viral 50 chart, with Entertainment Weekly noting the track in its 12 Songs To Hear Now. Complex named "Weak" among the Best Songs of 2015, and Disco Naivete anointed the evocative song as the #1 Best Song of 2015. On True Widow’s highly anticipated third album ‘Circumambulation’, the Dallas heavy ‘stonegaze’ trio hone in on their trademark syrupy simplicity with absolute perfection. Equal parts drone, post-rock and shoegaze, ‘Circumambaulation’ is the band’s most, controlled, concise and realized effort yet. Simultaneously True Widow’s darkest and poppiest record, ‘Circumambaulation’ is a moody triumph of a record perfect for both super late nights, and early Sunday mornings. Rarely does a band capture the vibe of dreary haze together with sticky male/female harmonies so infectiously. True Widow’s ‘Circumambulation’ is an easy top contender for record of summer, if not all of 2013.

Tamaryn's first two full-lengths (2010's 'The Waves' and 2012's 'Tender New Signs') stood out in a crowd of shoegaze / ethereal revivalists as much for what they were (careful, gorgeous, thrilling tapestries of guitar-based textures) as what they weren't (simplistic, trendy, disposable signposts made to be broken). With 'Cranekiss', Tamaryn emerges from her past in a way that's inviting, warm-blooded, and shockingly direct. She's made a big record, loaded with samples and synth triggers, the result of long nights grinding it out at the Brooklyn studio Gary's Electric, on her own and with Weekend's Shaun Durkan, and producer Jorge Elbrecht (Violens, Lansing-Dreiden). With 'Cranekiss' her sonic palette has exploded with maniacal abandon, pressed into service of a post-adolescent love letter to all the music that she and her collaborators hold dear, drawing influences from the feelings that fell out of her. Lyrically, this is Tamaryn's most personal collection of songs to date, and Elbrecht has placed her voice front and center across the entire record. 'Cranekiss' explores dark rock, dance pop, and glistening melancholy with a uniformly commanding presence across it all, in stormy, unsettled brushstrokes that apply pressure behind Tamaryn's words. 'Cranekiss' represents a long journey, and a new phase - a blood-red kaleidoscope of desire and late night abandon, a bold step forward.

Jet Plane and Oxbow, Shearwater's second original full-length for Sub Pop, is their career-defining album the leap forward those of us who ve been watching them for years have always believed they would make. Lush, powerful, and grand, with a confident edge heard in their live shows, it feels like the musical statement they've been working toward through five albums and a decade on the road. It's an album that captures the light and darkness of our time through the lens of one of our most treasured bands.

Though not necessarily nostalgic, the sound of Bury Me at Makeout Creek, the impressive third album from Mitski Miyawaki, is inventive and resourceful in a '90s-indie way.
