In this imaginatively shaped and sensitively played album her third for ECM - Russian pianist Anna Gourari explores musical connections and influences extending across the arts. Three suites of contemporary music are heard here. Alfred Schnittke's Five Aphorisms (1990) draw impulses from the poetry of his friend Joseph Brodsky. Rodion Shchedrin s Diary - Seven Pieces (2002) dedicated to Gourari and inspired by her playing, reflects the life of a pianist and composer. Wolfgang Rihm s sequence of tombeaux, Zwiesprache (1999) pays tribute to musicologists Alfred Schlee and Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht, conductor Paul Sacher, and art sociologist Hermann Wiesler. Threaded between the cycles are two Giya Kancheli miniatures drawn from theatre and movie music, as well as Arvo Pärt's early tintinnabuli-style Variations for the Healing of Arinuschka (1977). Gourari s investigation of artistic affinities is framed with Bach s transcriptions of Venetian composers Antonio Vivaldi and Alessandro Marcello: "Anna Gourari makes these Bach slow movements, too, ours," Paul Griffiths writes in the liner notes. "And the newer music is cherished and invigorated."

Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi is sharing 12 new recordings with the world, all recorded at home on his own upright pian o in one evening during Italy’s lockdown.
Einaudi decided to record his 12 Songs From Home, out digitally on 8 May, after being forced to postpone his tour due to coronavirus cancellations.
The composer explained: “I recorded 12 Songs From Home between March and April 2020 during the peak of Italy’s lockdown. In March I started to play live concerts regularly on social media.
“Switching on my phone to connect for 30-40 minutes with the world has been a beautiful and intimate alternative to the spring tour that I regrettably had to postpone. This new release is the memory of those home live concerts, my memory of this time, the memory of a strange and new atmosphere that we won’t forget.”
The special set of pieces, all recorded on Einaudi’s own iPhone, features some of his best-known works including 2004’s ‘Nuvole Bianche’, ‘Ascent’ from his mammoth Seven Days Walking project last year and ‘Elegy for the Arctic’, released in 2018 to highlight Greenpeace’s climate change campaign.

Nixon in China (1985-87) is an opera with music by the American composer John Adams and a libretto by Alice Goodman, about the visit of Richard Nixon to China in 1972, where he met with Mao Zedong and other Chinese officials.
The work was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Houston Grand Opera and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It premiered at the Houston Grand Opera, October 22, 1987 in a production by Peter Sellars with choreography by Mark Morris.
The opera is composed of three acts. The first details the anticipation and arrival of the Nixon cortege and the first meeting and evening in China. The second act shifts focus to Pat Nixon, as she makes tours of rural China, including an encounter at a pig farm. The second scene includes a performance of a Communist propaganda play, in which first Pat Nixon, then her husband and then Jiang Qing, intercede in the performance. The last act chronicles the last night in China, in which the characters dance a foxtrot, their thoughts wandering to their own pasts.
The opera takes an interesting perspective on the historical meeting by focusing on the personalities and personal histories of the six key players, Nixon and his wife Pat, Jiang Qing and Chairman Mao, and the two close advisors to the two parties, Henry Kissinger and Zhou Enlai.
Musically, the opera perhaps owes more influence to 1940s big band dance music than any Asian styles, and John Adams adapted the foxtrot theme from the last act into a concert piece entitled "The Chairman Dances". The libretto, however, was written completely in rhymed, metered couplets, reminiscent of poetic and theatrical styles native to China.

第二樂章完全出乎意料。弦樂奏出一段厚重而深情的旋律，厚重得就像俄羅斯荒原上廣袤的白桦林，鋼琴清澈而溫暖的三連音在弦樂上方飄過，仿佛夏日的陽光在溪水上跳躍。很難想象這仿佛肖邦夜曲一樣溫情脈脈的旋律，會出現在肖斯塔科維奇的作品裏面，我印象中是絕無僅有。這裏不再有尖刻，反諷，或是咆哮，也不再有複雜的變奏和隱喻，只是一首簡單而動人的歌謠，伴隨著鋼琴連綿不斷的三連音，弦樂深沈的吟唱，完全是屬于父親和兒子的時間。在反複兩次主題之後，鋼琴由c小調轉為降E大調，音色變得更加明亮。如果要想象作品背後的場景，那仿佛是作曲家在回憶，十幾年前一個陽光明媚的午後，他坐在沙發上，看著自己的兒子在客廳裏亂跑，跌倒了，又爬起來。
這真是一段溫情得讓人心碎的音樂。
緊接著第二樂章慢慢散去的余音，第三樂章在鋼琴充滿節奏感的舞蹈中開始，那個我們熟悉的肖斯塔科維奇又回來了，鋼琴和樂隊再次輪番上陣，精神抖擻地重新拾起快樂的工作，圓號的強奏和小鼓的滾奏開始重現第一樂章那種怪異的歡快。這個樂章出現了一段充滿俄羅斯民間舞蹈風格的，由鋼琴狂熱地演奏的旋律。肖斯塔科維奇曾經反諷地說俄羅斯是大象的故鄉，那麽這段音樂就是大象在歡快地跳舞了。作為鋼琴協奏曲，尤其是寫給自己的兒子，無論如何是要展示一下演奏家的技巧的，這一段音樂很炫技，很過瘾。不要忘了肖斯塔科維奇自己也是一個不錯的鋼琴家，在第一屆波蘭肖邦鋼琴大賽中拿過獎。手頭有一張作曲家演奏自己的這首作品的唱片，速度極快，充分展示了肖斯塔科維奇的鋼琴技巧。
