2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 拜占庭 - I'm 23 years old. Already I feel like I'm in my 70s, although not in the amount of wisdom I've garnered. My health is failing me, I don't enjoy life that much, I slowly become desensethized towards everything, struggling to feel any emotion, even the bad ones. I feel like I've lived enough. I can't imagine myself in my actual 70s. Everything I believed in, has crumbled. I know, it's probably not normal to feel this way at 23, but I believe it has to be normal at some point in your life. I believe, if you live for eternity, you will eventually come to some sort of existential crisis. You will eventually start to get disillusioned with human values, and start disconnecting from the human world, both in your perception of it and your personality. Eventually, you would become so different, you would become an outsider. Humans wouldn't be able to accept you, and you wouldn't even be interested in that. Perhaps, with time you would start looking upon them as inferior creatures, and from that point, as WWII showed us, you would start to become very cruel. Why wouldn't you feel superior, when you've had all the time in the world to gain more life experience, knowledge and skills than everybody else in the world? My point is, if you've lived for 206 years, you wouldn't be acting like a teenage girl from Twilight. P. S. I initially ended my review here, but then I realised, I'm being a bit unfair, cause my criticism mainly concerns Saoirse Ronan's character, and her storyline. Whereas Gemma Arterton's character is brilliant. She knows, what life is all about, she clearly has the experience, she does appear like somebody, who's lived a long life. Although, I'd love to see her a bit tired of doing the same activity for so many years, even if it's for the sake of her daughter. I also loved the portrayal of the process of transformation. I loved, that it hinted at something beyond our imagination, those old gods, Darvell spoke about. If I was making this film, I'd steer more into that direction. Overall the presentation is beautiful. I'm so disappointed, because I wanted to love this film...

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 哈萌小镇 - I feel like the film is trying to portray Dan Harmon as this deep, complicated, tortured genius of a person. Sorry, but I just don't see that. I see an absolutely normal person, who's achieved certain success in his life, but has a few very normal problems (tbh 'problem' is a strong word here). Yet the film is overdramatising them at some point, having Harmon to ponder upon... I don't even know what. I have just finished watching it, and it's very difficult for me to say, what the film was about. And, if you cut the dramatic chunk of the film, it leaves you with a pretty boring compilation of footage from his shows, which are moderately funny, and then the cliched reaffirming message in the end like "everything's gonna be fine" (I think he even says it at some point). Now, I have to make a disclaimer. I have nothing against Dan Harmon. I think Rick & Morty is one of the best animated shows of the recent years, and I've watched through the first season of Harmonquest and enjoyed it. I like Dan Harmon, I think he's talented, kind and funny. The only reason I decided to watch this doc, was because I got interested in him as a person, and in people surrounding him. But I really don't think this documentary should exist. If Harmon is a deep and interesting person, it doesn't reflect that. If he isn't, then there's no point in making a film about him. Either way, Harmontown has nothing to offer to its audience. I can't think of a reason to recommend it to anybody, unless you're a hardcore fan, who'd be pleased to just see some footage from the life of this person.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 亚历山大大帝 - One of the best historical films ever made tbh. Not only does it nail the persona of Alexander, it manages to carry the weight and impact of his conquests, bringing you along on the journey through the Near East and the life of one of the most remarkable people in history. The fact that it's told through the perspective of Ptolemy provides musings on the nature of this campaign, peace and war, culture and race, and all the issues of Alexander himself, which also fits the deep character study the film is going for. All that is done with very few historical inaccuracies, and amazing performances by all the actors. It's such an authentic and immersive experience that by the end of the film you feel nostalgic of the beginning, like you've lived a life beside that great leader. P. S. If you feel there's anything similar to this film or better at what it does, feel free to tell me, I'd be glad to check it out.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 兄弟 - I just wanna remind the Letterboxd audience, this is a film made by a rightist-nationalist, who often made hostile xenophobic remarks towards the peoples of the Caucasus and Central Asia. Here's what he said about immigrants in general: I don't like them [...] these people should live in their historical homeland... There's a scene in this film, where the main character tells to a Caucasian: "You're not my brother, black-assed scum." Well, that quote is often used by radical rightists in Russia. Think of it what you want. Not to mention, the whole scene is a straight-up rightist propaganda. I mean the only time it portrays immigrants from the Caucasus, they are depicted as evil, uneducated criminals. Whereas a German character, as well as a literal neo-nazi in the sequel are portrayed as quirky, but good guys that assist the protagonist, who btw has no qualms about collaborating with the nazis. [The reason I bring up the German is because the movie also views his Germanness through the lens of supposed antagonism between Russians and Germans, constantly referencing WWII. And yet, in that light still chooses to portray him positively] In fact, if you watch the sequel, it becomes pretty obvious that Balabanov's worldview, as well as his "artistic" vision always boils down to the good Russians vs. the bad others. Ironic, considering his own surname betrays Turkic origins. Whenever Danila in the film talks shit about America, it's not just a fictional character, it's Balabanov talking to the audience. Say what you want about how well executed the film is, it's still a propaganda piece. It doesn't matter how much you polish a turd, it's still gonna be a turd. And once you start rating style over substance and denying the context in favour of the appeal, you're a potential fascist. I mean, I don't have to remind you of Riefenstahl and how her movies were received in the Nazi Germany, do I? Post Scriptum: When I first wrote this review, I had no idea it would gain this many likes. I'll be the first to admit, the review was written poorly, I didn't put much effort into it. I have edited it once since, but it's kinda flawed even structurally or in how things are phrased, so I'm not gonna attempt to fix it. However, I'd like to add a bit more context for the people who aren't convinced by my point: Balabanov, when speaking about one of his earlier movies, said the following: "The film didn't turn out well. The script wasn't mine. It was an anti-Russian, pro-Jewish script." To people who think the protagonist is not intended to be viewed positively, here's an excerpt from an interview with aif.ru: The interviewer : "where are such heroes now?" Balabanov : I don't know, don't ask me. Notice how he has no problems with the interviewer calling Danila "a hero". To expand on the quote I mentioned in my review proper: The interviewer : how do you feel about the growing number of immigrants? Balabanov : Bad. I don't like them. [...] Most of them are dim-witted people. They hinder the country I live in. [...] It is wrong that these days there are immigrants everywhere. In the same interview later he complains that the borders are too open and calls for a stricter control. In another interview he complains that in Irkutsk the Chechens control the gambling industry and the Chinese control restaurants and trade: Balabanov : When we ourselves allow people with a completely different consciousness (which is more rational and strong) into our territory, it is easier for them to conquer everything. And they conquer. These are people of a different structure. They are different. That's how they are built. There is no use talking to them. You can't come to agreements. They'll outwit you. They can't be allowed in. They will defeat us. The interviewer : So what should we do? Balabanov : Either surrender or kick them out of here lawfully. But lawfully nobody will do it... So many people here defend the movie, saying the prevalence of racism and anti-Western sentiment here is just an accurate depiction of Russia in the 90s, that you're not meant to agree with. From Balabanov's interviews it's clear that he adores the rural Russia (which he calls "the REAL Russia"), as opposed to the big cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. In this movie the protagonist comes from such "REAL Russia", embodying Balabanov's own ideas of goodness, heroism and patriotic Russian spirit. He goes into the city corrupted by foreign influences to rescue his brother (who, like him, comes from the idealized rural Russia and thus is inherently good) from the corruption. On his journey he meets stupid women who are too emotional to stay away from corrupting influences and attachments. E.g. he gets involved with a woman who has an abusive husband, but after he "heroically" injures the husband, it is revealed that she would rather stay with the horrible husband than go with this "nice guy" protagonist. I think Balabanov views women as being weak and in need of guidance and protection from men. Which makes it all the more surprising how many women in other reviews claim to like the protagonist so much. If you watched this movie and still think it doesn't embody a repellent ideology, you're blind. There are more red flags than in the Soviet Union.

I wish there was more films tackling post-soviet regions. I feel like, Russia isn't being condemned enough for its imperialism, people need to see the consequences. However, from a filmmaking perspective, I find a disconnect between the overall style of the film, and the material shown in it. I feel like the tone is completely wrong, the music doesn't fit, and in fact, this could be much better with a more simplistic style. I feel like a film must convey the main protagonist's worldview, but The Botanist makes me feel like the director is trying to provoke reaction from the audience, make the story look more sad than it really is. I mean, don't get me wrong, it is sad, but it's sad in the way life is. But this style makes it all look too 'cinematic' and kinda superficial.

A boring ass film that should be called "The crazy old priest" instead of "The Horde", because this film is not about the Golden Horde, as you would think, judging by the title and the cover art. This film's main message is essentially "look how much we suffered from the mongol-tatars, but we are soooo deep and spiritual, unlike them. That's why they're in real hell, while our suffering is righteous and divine". Honestly, it even decides to mention in the end that Russia eventually annexed the Golden Horde. Because russians are so fucking spiritual and amazing, while everybody else is barbaric and will be punished by god. Disgusting piece of shit.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 冲出康普顿 - I'm not an advocate for 100% historical accuracy in films based on real events, but this film doesn't lie for the sake of artistic vision, it does so for other reasons. In fact, I feel there's not much of an artistic vision here at all. For its almost 3-hour runtime it's pretty shallow. It skips on a lot of very important events, yet adds some completely artificial ones, just to hold the script together. I'm not gonna get into specifics, but this film gets so much wrong about the characters, it comes off as offensive tbh. First of all, Eazy was never such an idiot, loser and a wuss. Dr. Dre was never a mr. good guy. In fact he was the worst of the team, if anything. I've heard and read so many stories about Dre, that make him look outright evil, and I hoped this film would provide some of Dre's reasoning for those actions, but it never even mentions them. Aside from all that, it's such a boring film. The pacing is all fucked, characterization is very weak, everything is so formulaic and romanticised to the point it makes me cringe. This is not a real life story, this is a very obvious hollywood motion picture, and it does everything to remind you that. Also, were there guys named MC Ren and DJ Yella in the group? Sorry, I didn't notice. Let alone a lot of lesser known people, who didn't even appear in the film. 2Pac appeared though. Only, he had nothing to do with this story, and the scene with him was so forced. And you can see that attitude in the credits too: for some reason they inserted Kendrick's quote, cause of course, he's hot right now, isn't he? This whole film is just pandering to the stars' egos. Anybody, who wasn't popular enough, isn't good enough to appear in it. What makes me sad though, is that there's a lot of people, who don't know shit about N.W.A., and who're gonna be completely misinformed after watching this. On the positive note though, O'Shea Jr. absolutely embodied Ice Cube's character. He was great. And Alexandra Shipp is gorgeous.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 天际行者 - A shallow shell of a film. A commercial, conformist, creatively impotent piece of propaganda shite. The only reason this film exists is to tell the russian people how great of a nation they are. Throughout almost 2.5 hour runtime the film raises no questions and touches upon zero themes. The only thing it does is shows how 2 guys went to space and back. I'm absolutely against the idea of making historical films just for the sake of showing historical events. But this abomination doesn't even do that. I'm not familiar with the original story, but I'm 90% sure the film constantly lies to you. It can be seen in countless cliches, and the fact every 5 minutes smth goes wrong in their carefully planned space operation. And each time smth goes wrong, the film obviously overdramatizes the events. Like, when their pod has landed somewhere in Siberia, and the government can't find them, they just HAVE to sit outside the pod to freeze to death. I mean, what's the fucking point? I know it's not much warmer inside it, but at least it's less windy. Oh yeah, and the music.... It just keeps playing, I think I'd have a hard time finding a quiet moment in the film. And all the music is this typical hollywod blockbuster ripoff kind. No originality whatsoever. I guess I'd have to give it a point for a few beautiful shots, especially the in the scene, where the guy first steps out into space. Other than that, absolute waste of time. Terrible.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 攻壳机动队 - This review won't contain spoilers, meaning I won't discuss plot details, but I will discuss some ideas and concepts, which may spoil things, so read at your own risk. Although, I think, if you haven't seen the films I'm about to mention here, none of it would make sense anyway. I wanna start by saying, I feel like there's been some sort of technophobia going around in the 90s-early 00s Japan. While watching this film, I couldn't help, but draw parallels with some horror films that came out not a long time after it. Specifically I wanna name Ringu, Pulse and Marebito. Although Ghost in the Shell is not a horror film, it does have some horror vibes and that existentialist bleak message, which is very comparable with those films mentioned. As in Ringu and Pulse we see supernatural reaching out (admittedly in different ways) to humans through artificial, and as we see human reaching out to supernatural through artificial in Marebito, we see artificial reaching out to humans through almost "supernatural" in Ghost in the Shell. If you've seen the film, the initial event, that causes the attempt at contact, cannot really be called normal, so it comes as a shock to the audience, cause we never expect it. It's always fascinating how one film can make you think of other ideas explored in other films, that you've never thought about. How I can now see the themes of losing human identity in the face of technological advancement in those supernatural horror films now (e.g. in Marebito the desire to see the horror for real, cause the tape isn't satisfying enough). All of them seem to convey the idea of Nature vs. Technology in one way or another. Only, GitS goes a bit further, by showing the artificial becoming the natural, and the natural becoming the artificial, so the roles are switched. If you pay close attention, the most "human" characters in this film are the least biological. Also, similar to those horror films I mentioned, this one seems to hint at the apocalypse of sorts. In this case, the upcoming extinction of human race as we know it. I've seen this film 3 years ago and didn't really understand it, but I'm glad I rewatched, cause now I consider it a masterpiece. P. S. It also feels a bit like the creators hint at the threat of major chinese immigration to Japan. I dunno if this was intended, or I'm reading too much into it, but it's full of kanji characters with latin transliterations of chinese names on a lot of them. Tell me if you know. P. P. S. Oh yeah, and this film would be very relevant right now, with the whole identity crises / gender issues going on around. Well, I suppose that's why they made the hollywood live action one. Though I haven't seen it, so I dunno if they tackle this issue in it.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 荒凉幻境 - DISCLAIMER: Anything I state in this review is purely my interpretation of the film. I don't claim any of this to be the definitive truth or the intention of the creators. I don't necessarily think Kurosawa was afraid of the approach of 21st century, but he probably used the edge of millenium as a symbol of the changes, the world has been going through, and his experience of them. I think this film is about people, struggling to accept the new era, the world that is alien to them, that they don't really understand, and in which they feel like strangers. Probably because the slowdown of the GDP growth in Japan, that came around 90s, has made people feel existential crisis, and everything new, therefore, was percieved as something worse than what they'd experienced growing up. So this led to the feeling of stagnation. Worsening is the fact, it all happened in the 90s, when the technology started consuming more and more of our lives, it probably felt like the world is coming to an end. I find the film very relatable. Growing up in the 90s-00s Russia, feeling the life getting better and suddenly stopping, and now being stuck in this continuous series of terrible events happening all over the world, I do feel similar to the characters in this film, at least that's how I see it. The film is a visual storytelling masterpiece, having very little dialogue, each scene still feels emotional and moody. Yet, when the dialogue does appear, it hits you deeper than anything you could expect. It is a poetic farewell to the dying era, filled with melancholy and horror. And I regret not having seen it earlier, because now Pulse and Bright Future make much more sense to me. Now I feel like it's a trilogy, with Pulse showing consequences of what's being established here, and Bright Future serving as a sort of epilogue. This is, so far, my second favourite Kiyoshi Kurosawa film (the first being Cure), and I recommend everyone to watch it. Brilliant piece of cinema and a very unique experience. While watching it, I've had so many things I wanted to say about it, but maybe not here and not now...

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 怪谈 - The film delves into some existential themes, portraying a character that seeks happiness, suppressing the horrors of reality, therefore being doomed to repeat the same cycle of hurting people around him and himself till the end of his days. What strikes most is how inescapable it shows suffering to be for any humans. We fall in love, we hurt each other, we break up, rinse, repeat. Feelings cannot be controlled and the result cannot be calculated, but one thing is apparent - everything's gonna crumble and everybody's gonna suffer, more or less. Exploring such an important topic, this film could be a masterpiece, but it fails in the most crucial aspect - the story. While the first half of the film, which is supposed to establish characters and develop emotionall ties to them, is rushed, the second half, on the contrary, drags for too long, with not much happening. As a result, the film may appear boring. I haven't read the original ghost story it's adapted from, so I can't say whether it's fault of the screenwriter or not. Though every other aspect in this film is perfect, so I think it's worth watching. Overall, I think it's the second best in the J-Horror Theater series, right after Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Retribution.
