2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 星际探索 - I know that a year ago I wouldn't be able to truly appreciate this movie. I'm glad that the events I went through have happened. Anybody, who goes into this looking for hard sci-fi, will probably be disappointed, as the movie is not very scientifically accurate. But if you wanna watch a personal journey about loneliness, son-father relationships, obsessions and the meaning of life, you've come to the right place. In fact, I would suggest to look at space metaphorically. The protagonist isn't traveling through the solar system, he's overcoming the space between him and his father, as well as fighting his personal demons. What manifests in material form often has direct connection to the protagonist's psyche and what he's going through. The experience of watching this was magnificent. The cinematography and the music are so beautiful, I wished some shots were just a little longer. I think I'll forever remember this viewing.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 木乃伊 - While not as good as the 1932 version (which I consider to be one of the best horror films of all time), this is still pretty good. What I find fascinating about this film is the Ancient-Egyptian funeral scene. I'll admit, I know very little about the mythology and/or the rituals of Kemet, but, what I saw here, seemed very authentic and well-researched. The whole scene was very long and methodical, and made sure to not gloss over any nuances. I personally think, that such authenticity adds to the horror. The scene of Kharis rising out of the swamp, or the one where he breaks into the asylum through the window, send chills down my spine. Masterfully executed, with long, uninterrupted shots to create suspense, as well as the very smart lighting and blocking. Also, although I already mentioned the burial scene as the highlight of the film, there is a second one, that comes very close to that title as well. It's that conversation between Mehemet and John, that occurs closer towards the end of the film. It reminds me of that face off between Dracula and Van Helsing in Tod Browning's Dracula. Only this time the viewer is also faced with a moral dilemma. The film raises an important question about archaeology and the lengths to which we are prepared to go for the learning and the sharing of knowledge.

Hell, I'd understand 4 years, but she managed to find a new boyfriend, marry him and have a child, who's, by the looks of it, at least 1 year old. Which means, she couldn't even wait 2 years, and that's assuming her relationship with that dentist guy progressed extremely fast. I'd think normally a grown up person would date somebody for at least 2 years, before marrying, and then spend about a year in marriage, before making kids, but I dunno. Maybe this guy was the one. Or, more likely, she started dating him a couple of months after her husband disappeared.

In the end though, the film asks a question, whether that kind of life is worth living.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 影 - Yimou's return to wuxia is unfortunately not the return to form. While I highly enjoyed this film, just like The Great Wall, it's nothing but a fun blockbuster action film. You could say it tackles a lot of the same themes, as his famous wuxia trilogy, but it doesn't explore them, instead focusing on action and political thriller aspects. In the end we're left with pretty underdeveloped characters, so all that intrigue and backstabbing leaves me impressed, but not as emotionally engaged as it should've. The action scenes are awesome though, and had me going "fuck yeah" in a few moments there. However, that's not why I loved Yimou's films in the first place. His best films weren't about action, and when they did have action scenes, they were a narrative tool, while still remaining beautifully choreographed. You know that criticism idiots have towards Star Wars prequels, when they say "action scenes don't have impact, they feel like a dance"? That's kind of how Yimou's action scenes felt before, something gracious and profound, something meditative, and that's a good thing. Now you can clearly see emphasis on certain moves and certain actions during fights, like they were designed with spectacle in mind. I dunno, what's going on in Yimou's head, and why would he move towards this kind of cinema in his older age. I'd always thought the process is supposed to go the other way. But still can't deny this and The Great Wall are masterfully made films that succeed in what they're doing - entertaining with style. EDIT: Removed the rating. While I still mostly agree with what I said in the review (at least according to my memories), I have some doubts whether I would still rate it the same. For that I would need to rewatch the movie.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 活死人之日 - Rewatched the whole trilogy. And yes, I consider it a trilogy, cause every film in the series, that came after it felt like it had nothing to do with these films, aside from the fact they're both about zombies. I dunno, consider Land of the Dead as a reboot or something. Night, Dawn and Day are the original trilogy. Anyway, here I'm talking about this film only, as I feel like the previous 2 don't need further comments, but this one does. Particularly, because it was heavily criticised. All three of the films had varying degrees of political and social commentary. I feel like Day of the Dead might appear inferior specifically because of its main message and how the film conveys it. I'll be honest with you, I was initially put off by some things in this film. For example the soldier characters. The main one acts like a cartoony villain, and the two fat guys are constantly laughing like crazy at jokes, that aren't even remotely funny. Another example is that whole storyline with Bub. I felt like it makes the film less sci-fi or less horror. I did not know, how I felt about it, but I felt like it was wrong. Then the weird ending, that feels abrupt and nonsensical. However, once you look at the big picture, everything makes sense. I think the main question this film raises is: humanity and civilization - what are they? What defines human and civilized? And we can see that in people, who are desperate, hopeless and can barely tolerate what's going on. If you actually consider the fact, these people had to live in a cave for god knows how long, catch living dead and experiment on them, while getting constant reminders, that the humankind is on the brink of extinction, you can start to see, why they behave like that. That's what we can all turn into, if pushed to the limits. Yes, these people are going insane. The only ones, who aren't, are the helicopter guys, because they've got a place to relax, and the main character, who needs to be sane for the audience to relate to her. The storyline of Dr. Frankenstein and Bub shows how fragile our psyche is and how we're not that different from the flesh-eating monsters. The doctor keeps talking about civilizing the zombies, while doing absolutely immoral things. We can also clearly see, how his past and issues with his family affect his way of treating the zombies. Frankly, the fact, he can keep justifying himself for all the horrible atrocities, brings to mind the images of concentration camps in WW2 Germany and Japan (Manchuria). The line between good and evil gets blurred, it's no longer just good guys trying to survive. It's a war. And, as they say, "all is fair in war". Therefore, the ending makes sense. It doesn't really matter if they get out or not. If the beach on an island is a dream or if the zombie grabbing her face is. Nothing matters anymore, because it's the end. Or maybe it's her nervous system breaking down, because she's getting torn by the zombies. If you've ever experienced extreme pain, it can cause you to kinda lose the sense of reality and start seeing images of nice things: the things you wished, your memories, actual dreams, it can be just music or sounds as well. Sometimes it turns into a kaleidoscopical kind of vision, not too different from DMT, I imagine. Anyway, it doesn't matter. One thing I still don't understand though is why nobody has even wondered, where the hell did Miguel go, after all the shit hit the fan? Did they just assume he died?

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 吸血鬼 - I heard some people say, that this version is better than the american one, and I can't understand how anyone could make this assumption. The story is pretty much the same, the atmosphere is solid, but not as thick as in the american version. One thing though, that separates this one is awful acting. Maybe the actors aren't that bad, but they are definitely miscast, especially Dracula, Van Helsing and Renfield. Renfield here looks like an actor, trying to portray insanity, mostly by just laughing out loud. In Browning's version he looked insane. His unnatural smile and his penetrating gaze were downright creepy, and the transoformation he underwent throughout the film was astonishing. Van Helsing and Dracula here look like comedic actors. Especially Dracula, when he's trying to be creepy, it's so cringeworthy. Their legendary faceoff became a mockery. I swear you could mistake it for a parody of the american version, if it was any bit funny. Edward Van Sloan had an incredible charisma. In his performance you could read wisdom, bravery, cihvalry. And Bela Lugosi was probably the best casting choice in history, and I can debate anybody, who disagree. If anything, this film has made me realise, how much the american version of Dracula relied on acting to build its horror. Made me appreciate that film even more. But this version, it doesn't really bring anything to the table. Considering the story is about the same, there's really no point in watching this film for anybody.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 启示 - I'm sorry, but I can't help but feel like this film is colonialist apologia. I see many people here rate it highly (and many seem to not point out what the film is even about tbh), but tell me I'm wrong, I'd be glad if I am. It all starts with a quote: "A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within", which can be interpreted in different ways. One can say that, applied to the story, it means that the native Americans lost because they weren't united. But one can also interpret it as: "since native Americans lost, they weren't a great civilization". I thought, I shouldn't be pessimistic, maybe it is indeed intended to express the former meaning. However, as the film progressed, I started to suspect bad intentions behind it. Mel Gibson has a tendency of portraying pretty much black-and-white worlds in terms of morality. Every character is either good or bad. In Braveheart it was the good Scottish against the evil English. In Passion of Christ it was good Jesus and his followers vs the Jews and the Romans (but mostly the Jews). Here it's the main character with his fellow villagers against literally everybody else (except the Spanish of course). What's alarming is that the villagers, including the protagonist, all act like pretty much modern westerners. It's almost like they don't exist in the realm of gods and spirits (like true pagans should), they don't care that much about continuation of their family (which is exemplified in one guy accusing his mother-in-law of demanding a grandchild), and they're overly romantic and idealistic. Ever since a tribe invades that village, all we see is examples of the locals' savagery. This civilization seems literally filled with characters cartoony levels of evil. On the way to the city we see a sick child and later a sick old man (as if to say, since the sicknesses already existed, it's not a big deal that the Europeans brought more). The child makes a prophecy, that seems to be implied as divine (coming from God), 'cause she is not a priest or anything of that sort. The prophecy basically says that all evil shall be vanquished soon, all evil-doers will suffer. Then they arrive to the Mayan city, where we are shown slavery (as if to say, since slavery already existed, it's okay that the Europeans also did it). And then we are shown the local religious ritual that gets interrupted by a solar eclipse, which is interpreted as a sign from gods (apparently to show how stupid these people's religious views were). During all of that the protagonist and his fellow villagers look at these people with such shock in their eyes, like they are not part of the same civilization, like they don't speak the same fucking language. Then a long chase starts for like half of the film, during which many of the villains die. The good guys win. And then they see the Spanish ships. That prophecy from the little girl from before seems to be about fulfilled. You know, that girl who wasn't a priest or anything, just a regular sick girl. Maybe that was a message from the God? You know, the actual Christian god, not one of these "stupid" ones that these "savages" believed in. Because it prophesized that evil people will suffer, and there you go, great Christian saviours come to punish the evil. It's not like everybody will suffer, no. For the good guys, it's not the end of the world. It's "the new beginning". Yeah, that's what the film says. And the protagonist walks off into the sunset with his family, smiling and shit, in the good ol' Hollywood tradition. I mean, tell me I'm wrong. P.S. Btw, what is the story arc of the protagonist? Like, he goes from being afraid to not being afraid or smth? Well, I mean, he was brave enough to go fight the invaders, but I guess, since his father said he was afraid, then he must've been. I dunno. He's really a dead fucking character, a fucking void. This movie is garbage, regardless of the themes.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 夺魄冤魂 - Recently I've been reading Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing, and he's introduced an interesting concept: "conciousness could be passed on as foodstuffs". SPOILER for Swamp Thing : In that book a batch of microorganisms become a vessel for one unified conciousness. In my Event Horizon Review I was speculating about the idea of an inanimate object sharing conciousness with something else, perhaps even a conciousness without a vessel. What I'm gonna say here is a sort of continuation of that review, so SPOILERS for Event Horizon ahead: It's weird, that I now stumble upon this film. For one reason or another I got used to thinking of a ghost as a humanoid figure, that moves around the space similar to humans. This films made me realize, how limited that view was. Perhaps, a conciousness, freed from its vessel, could adopt the next closed space it finds itself in, as its new vessel. See, I believe the house in this film IS the boy. This idea entered my mind, when in one scene, multiple objects were interacted with at the same time. A ghost, that is a creature, inhabiting space and time like humans, couldn't do it. So then I started following this line of thinking. I noticed, that the film never really contradicts this idea... Almost. Later we see, how a little girl sees nightmare of the dead boy, because his remains are under her floor. That means, the boy is interacting with her. When Russell finds the medal, it comes out of the ground by itself. Later, when Russell brings the medal to the senator, we see the boy interacting with the senator through the medal. As you can see, the boy's singular conciousness occupies several vessels, like the microorganisms in Swamp Thing AND all the vessels are inanimate objects. That conciousness also probably permeates the vessels. Like in Event Horizon, we see it crawling inside of people's minds, reading their thoughts and influencing their decisions, when they are in the house. All that seems to suggest one thing: our bodies are as valuable or as worthless as the inanimate objects surrounding us, or those objects are as valuable/worthless as our bodies. Hm, I guess that's it. I have nothing else to say.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 活死人之夜 - Probably the only one of the Living Dead remakes, that you should watch. As dark, atmospheric, deep and thought-provoking as the original. Tom Savini even held back on gore in order to stay true to the spirit of the original. For those, that don't know, he was responsible for special effects in Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, and those films had a lot of very well-made death scenes, where people get literally torn apart by the zombies. Well, here you wouldn't find it. Instead, at its darkest, you see shots of zombies slowly eating away at corpses and stumbling around. Just like in the original, images, that really get under your skin and make you question the human nature. Towards the end though, it gets really melancholic. Something you don't see many horror films do. The last few scenes ilicit some kind of existential dread, the feelings of hopelessness, doom. I personally like this ending almost as much as the original's. Yeah, it's not as important socially or politically, but philosophically its effect is much stronger.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 养鬼吃人 - Back in 2008 I bought a video game called Clive Barker's Jericho. To me, as an impressionable teenager, it was an awe-inspiring experience. It was filled with unique theological concepts, mix of all kinds of spiritual beliefs, grotesque designs, all wrapped in a dark story, that places itself very believably into the real history, geography and culture. From that point on, I became interested in this Barker fella, but back then I wasn't into horror, so my first real exploration of his material started around 2013. I remember reading about him: most people seemed to praise Hellraiser as his masterpiece. That was fine with me, cause I was never much of a reader. Anyway, when I saw it at the time, I didn't really like it. So, recently I played through Jericho again, and fgained new kind of appreciation for it, because of all the experience and knowledge I've garnered over the years. That lead me to believe, that maybe the same could happen, when I watch Hellraised... But no. Unfortunately. This movie is a mixed bag, no matter how much I tried to like it. The thing I realised, that over the years, despite me learning to appreciate new concepts, this film's problem was always, that it didn't have that many of them, and didn't explore the ones, that it did have. There is literally 2 things, that make this film sorta stand out. The idea of flexibility between pain and pleasure. The idea of going beyond the limits of our current perception of feelings. The whole thing about the box and the Cenobites. The latter one is especially ironic, because it's such a lovecraftian idea, the fear of the unknown: What is this box? Who made it? Who are these creatures? Where do they come from? You are afraid of what you don't see and don't understand. And I said it's ironic, because Clive Barker famously criticized Lovecraft's writing for exactly that: the lack of descriptions of monsters and such. It seems in Barker's mind the violence and gore are more scary. Not for me though. Imo it's just gross and unpleasant to look at. Unfortunately, that's what the majority of the film consists of: gore, blood and guts, all in your stupid face. The nightmarish scenes with Cenobites take around 15 minutes overall. Oh, and the ending sucks all the fear out of these mysterious trans-dimensional demons, because of how the main character disposes of them. They literally wait for her to turn the box, one of them gets defeated by a collapsed ceiling (which made me laugh out loud, I swear). I really can't understand, how the creator of something as profound as Jericho, can make this kind of grounded and shallow "revive a zombie" story. The funny thing is though, Jericho is universally hated, as opposed to this film. :/

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 黑洞表面 - I swear down, the first time I watched this film a few years ago on the TV, IT WAS DIFFERENT. I've looked for any information on different cuts of the film, but all I could find was the info about the planned Director's Cut, that can never be made due to the lost footage. But I'm positive, that I saw a different film. I clearly remember, when the crew first boarded Event Horizon and started exploring the ship, there were rapid flashes of what had happened to the previous crew. You couldn't make out what's going on, but it created a sense of unease. I can remember it clearly because it was one of the things that struck me about this film. It was probably the first time I saw this technique (implemented this well?). I also feel like the film was longer and had less jump scares, but can't be sure about that. This time I was watching a Blu-ray version, so if you have any info about it being altered or something, please share.

Sometimes in life there is no road to walk, yet you have no choice but to keep going forward. Into the darkness. And you step on the broken glass. And your feet hurt. And you're losing blood. And you just don't want to keep going. You feel like you can't do it anymore, but you can't turn back, because then it'll get worse for everybody... So you just walk.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 英格兰的田野 - It feels like this film expects you to have some knowledge of the occult. I'm not sure, because some scenes feel like straight up references to something, which I haven't seen/read/experienced. Perhaps a rewatch a couple of years later is required. Towards the end though, I started to feel like the film itself is a magical spell or contains several spells in it. The laws of space and time, life and death stop applying at some point. The ending made me question if the story could repeat itself. I think there's quite a lot of wisdom in this film, and it's definitely worth a watch for the dialogues alone, but the bigger picture seems hard to grasp for an outsider of the occult community. Or maybe this film has nothing to do with occultism, I dunno.

2025年4月15日 评论 a review of 战栗黑洞 - Spoilers ahead for this film and Providence by Alan Moore. Always liked this film, but just recently rewatched it after reading Alan Moore's Providence, and I have to say, I started to appreciate it much more. There seem to be some similar concepts involved, like commentary on pop culture or the realm of ideas, that Alan Moore has been talking about for years, and its influence on the material world. Even plotwise, both stories talk about characters working in publishing, who go to explore lovecraftian America, meet a very influential horror writer and discover their role as the "herald". Of course I'm not accusing anyone of plagiarism. In any way, I find Providence to be a much deeper and complex story overall, and very underappreciated for that matter. I'm just saying, that it widended my worldview and allowed me to understand this film better.
