But for Chicagoans, soul music in its heyday from the 1960s to the 1980s was more than just a series of hits: it was a marker and a source of black empowerment. In Move On Up, Aaron Cohen tells the remarkable story of the explosion of soul music in Chicago. Together, soul music and black-owned businesses thrived. Record producers and song-writers broadcast optimism for black America’s future through their sophisticated, jazz-inspired productions for the Dells and many others. Curtis Mayfield boldly sang of uplift with unmistakable grooves like “We’re a Winner” and “I Plan to Stay a Believer.” Musicians like Phil Cohran and the Pharaohs used their music to voice Afrocentric philosophies that challenged racism and segregation, while Maurice White of Earth, Wind, and Fire and Chaka Khan created music that inspired black consciousness. Soul music also accompanied the rise of African American advertisers and the campaign of Chicago’s first black mayor, Harold Washington, in 1983. This empowerment was set in stark relief by the social unrest roiling in Chicago and across the nation: as Chicago’s homegrown record labels produced rising stars singing songs of progress and freedom, Chicago’s black middle class faced limited economic opportunities and deep-seated segregation, all against a backdrop of nationwide deindustrialization.
Drawing on more than one hundred interviews and a music critic’s passion for the unmistakable Chicago soul sound, Cohen shows us how soul music became the voice of inspiration and change for a city in turmoil.

2007年、40歳の若さで亡くなった坂井さん。生前、彼女は作詞のために毎日のように言葉をメモしていました。番組では、その膨大なメモをご紹介するとともに、歌詞に込められた意味や楽曲の魅力、坂井さんご本人の思いや人柄にも迫っていきます。また、“幻の音源”や、これまでほとんど世に出ていなかった坂井さんの“収録現場での素顔”も紹介。数々のヒット曲を生み出した創作の舞台裏を読み解く120分です！

如果问刚刚在巴西南大河州(Rio grande do sul)格拉玛多(Gramado)开幕的第33届“国际拉丁电影节”最抢眼的电影是什么，虽然目前电影节尚未结束，但答案已差不多揭晓，那就是巴西电影《弗朗西斯科的二个儿子》(Dois filhos de Francisco)。
以巴西当前最当红的兄弟歌手组合Zezé Di Camargo与Luciano的真实故事改编，影片《Dois filhos de Francisco》讲述的是这两位歌手的父亲Francisco为实现自己的梦想-------将儿子栽培成歌手，所经历的种种磨难与艰辛，但这位倔强执着的父亲在生活极端贫困、旁人不理解的情况下永不言弃。在这部片长约2小时的电影中，有三分之二的篇幅是展示Zezé Di Camargo与Emival兄弟(Zezé最早的搭档，但Emival后不幸死于车祸)童年学艺与演出经历。片中充满乡愁、热烈激昂、渗透着巴西民族文化之根的sertaneja内地音乐贯穿着影片始终。
Zezé Di Camargo与Luciano的歌迷很多，其目前的身价在巴西属重量级，他们最成功的专辑“是爱”(é o amor)已在全巴西发行了2000万张。Zezé Di Camargo与Emival童年之坎坷，Zezé Di Camargo与Luciano成年后闯荡的种种失败措折，在所有喜欢和了解他们的巴西歌迷中并不是什么新闻。但在看了影片之后，我发现，不仅许多巴西观众在影片放映过程中抽泣抹泪，影片结束后沉浸在回味中舍不得离开，甚至就连我这个外国人也照样是唏嘘不已。
就我看来，《Dois filhos de Francisco》是一部非常成功的写实力作。在美国影片泛滥成灾的巴西，本土味浓的巴西电影佳作可遇而不可求。《Dois filhos de Francisco》的真实性与感染力，对于中国人来说，只要曾在巴西生活过一年，就会产生强烈的共鸣。
就是在这样的共鸣中，我看到了巴西的乡村教育的窘况。Zezé Di Camargo出生于1962年戈亚斯州历史名城Pirenópolis临近乡村，尽管目前是巴西的天皇巨星，但在70-80年代本该接受中小学教育之时，由于政府投资不力，所以Zezé Di Camargo及其弟妹大多连最基础的教育也未享受过。这种状况目前虽然有了很大改善，但如果深入巴西东北内地农村或者亚玛逊地区，适龄青少年无书可读、走不出土地困囿的情况仍然存在。
在这部影片中，我同样看到了农村贫民为寻找梦想，改变命运到城市寻梦的足迹。Zezé Di Camargo的父亲Francisco在农村本也有一亩三分地，但为了有音乐才华儿子们的前途，固执地放弃了赖有生存的家园，到戈亚尼亚市当小工养活家人。Francisco的这一行为其实与巴西城市化的进程相吻合。巴西的城市化起始于上世纪50年代，70-80年代正是贫民涌入城市的高峰期，而目前巴西的城市化水平已达81%。
影片的开头有不少是Francisco与妻子连续生育小孩的镜头，加上死去的Emvial，Francisco夫妇共生育了8个小孩。这种情况在80年代以前的巴西农村十分普遍。巴西之所以是目前世界上人口最年轻的国家，最主要的贡献是农村与城市教育程度低下的贫民夫妇。在影片中还能看到，尚不到17岁的Luciano未婚生子，其小女友由于不堪忍受弃子而去。像这种17岁左右青少年就当上了未婚父母的，现在在巴西仍十分常见。
影片中的许多画面，是在巴西每天都能看到的真实：失业、流浪卖艺者、鞋童、走街贬卖人......当然，影片中更多的还是音乐。土儿吧叽的农村舞会、抱手风琴(Sanfona)持木吉他(Viola)的乡村歌手、牛仔节上的音乐演出......饱含深情的戈亚斯州内地音乐，通过Zezé Di Camargo与Luciano的原声演唱，为已有多处亮点的影片增添了无穷的亲切感。

With Hit Me, Fred, sensational side man Fred Wesley Jr. moves front and centre to tell his life story. A legendary funk, soul, and jazz musician, Wesley is best known for his work in the late sixties and early seventies with James Brown and as leader of Brown's band, Fred Wesley and the J. B.'s. Having been the band's music director, arranger, trombone player, and frequent composer, Wesley is one of the original architects of funk music. He describes life working for the Godfather of Soul, revealing the effort and sometimes frustrating discipline behind Brown's tight, raucous tunes. After leaving Brown and the JBs, Wesley arranged the horn sections for Parliament, Funkadelic, and Bootsy's Rubber Band, and led Fred Wesley and the Horny Horns. Adding his signature horn arrangements to the P-Funk mix, Wesley helped make funk music even funkier. Wesley's distinctive sound reverberates through rap and hip hop music today. In Hit Me, Fred, he recalls the many musicians whose influence he absorbed, beginning with his grandmother and father - both music teachers - and including mentors in his southern Alabama hometown and members of the Army Band. In addition to the skills he developed working with James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and the many talented musicians in their mileau, Wesley describes the knowledge picked up playing trombone with the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, Hank Ballard, and Count Basie's band. He also recounts learning about the music business, particularly through his work in Los Angeles recording sessions. Wesley is a virtuoso storyteller, whether describing the electric rush of performances when the whole band is in the groove, the difficulties of trying to make a living as a rhythm and blues musician, or the frustrations often felt by sidemen. 緣起於1994年由陶曉清與台大人文報社所合作的《台灣流行音樂百張最佳專輯1975.9-1993.1》，當時由陶曉清出面邀集一百多位專業人士評審投票，從專輯整體、原創性、詞、曲、演唱等方面評分，選出了從1975年楊弦的《中國現代民歌》起，至1993年台灣流行音樂百張最佳專輯，並由人文報針對每張專輯撰寫介紹，編撰成專書。
這本原為大學社團的出版物，意外成了台灣流行音樂史上至今唯一一本具專業與權威性的Music Guide，也見證記錄了台灣的流行文化史。這本「百張最佳專輯」在許多歌手和樂迷圈中成為絕版經典，甚至包括大陸都還有許多樂迷爭相複印收藏。
如今由音樂人交流協會主辦，陶曉清及馬世芳母子攜手策劃，葉雲平主編，接續前書，再度邀集樂界專業人士選出了1993-2005年間的百張最佳專輯，結合先前的百張，本書選出了從1975到2005，共30年間流行音樂最佳的200張專輯。
製作前後耗時八年，召集多位知名DJ、作家、記者、樂評人等合力為兩百張專輯撰寫精闢評介。書中共收錄108名歌手、22組團體、2000首以上的歌曲，每張專輯都有專業詳盡的介紹及封面圖片，加上豐富的歌曲出版參考名單，深度與廣度兼具，訊息與情感共載。

新加坡首部以校园民谣为题材的纪录片，娓娓叙述了新加坡关闭华校之后 ，海外华侨在失语的处境中创作自己的歌。纪录片搜集珍贵的档案资料，以一首悦耳的歌曲，追溯七八十年代的诗乐与新谣（新加坡年轻人自创歌谣），重温了着短暂但亮丽的音乐篇章，以及从边缘迈向主流并走入历史的过程。

THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE is currently playing in theatres. (This is being written in October, 2003.) I believe the DVD will include this version with other material, but, since that won't be out until November, I'm only commenting on what's being seen in movie theatres. This is a film of a memorial concert. George Harrison's colleagues and friends gathered at the Royal Albert Hall a years after his death and performed. The film quality is good and so is the sound. Everybody is relaxed. I've always felt THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH has an atmosphere of panic. THE CONCERT FOR GEORGE, with an equally stellar line-up, is much more assured than THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH. A highlight is a piece featuring Eric Clapton playing a guitar solo with Ravi Shankar's musicians behind him. The piece was written by Ravi Shankar for this event. George Harrison's concept of music which is both Western and Eastern is realized. Paul McCartney sings Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" clearly and sincerely. Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne sing "Handle With Care," the Traveling Wilburys' signature tune. Billy Preston is in fine voice and someone I've never heard of, Joe Brown, performs. His band was managed by Brian Epstein. We are shown a poster for an event at which the Beatles warmed up for Joe Brown's group. Joe Brown's songs are sung in a warm, confident voice and he plays a ukelele. Ukeleles were a major joy for Harrison in his last decade. Ringo sings "Photograph" with better keyboard work than I've ever heard on it. He drums on a couple of the songs Paul sings on. McCartney and Clapton play a segmented "Something," Paul beginning it with a ukelele and Clapton coming in about a third of the way through with a bright electric solo. The drumming at this point successfully duplicates the sound on ABBEY ROAD. Olivia Harrison lights a lamp at the beginning and, throughout the concert, Dhani Harrison plays rhythm guitar. He plays piano during the Ravi Shankar composition. During "Isn't It a Pity," Dhani sings "Nah, nah, nah, nah-nah, nah, nah" in a tipping of the hat to "Hey Jude." After "Isn't It a Pity," Ringo introduces Paul. Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam (joined by Neil Innes and Tom Hanks, actually) do two skits and Palin makes two humorously pompous speeches. Several times, but not intrusively, the performers speak to the cameras about George. During one or two songs, the voice of an interviewee comes over a song, and that's my one objection. Altogether, this is a movie of a good concert and the last few minutes are really quite moving. I saw it with a small audience, but everybody clapped at the end.
