This book is a comprehensive survey of the structure, organization and institutionalization of local community religious traditions in north China villages in the twentieth century. These traditions have their own forms of leaders, deities and beliefs. Despite much local variation one everywhere finds similar temples, images, offerings and temple festivals, all supported by practical concerns for divine aid to deal with the problems of everyday life. These local traditions are a structure in the history of Chinese religions; they have a clear sense of their own integrity and rules, handed down by their ancestors. There are Daoist, Buddhist and government influences on these traditions, but they must be adapted to the needs of local communities. It is the villagers who build temples and organize festivals, in which all members of the community are expected to participate and contribute. With chapters on such topics as historical origins and development, leadership and organization, temple festivals, temples and deities, and beliefs and values.

Gandhara, the ancient name for the region around modern Peshawar in northern Pakistan, was of pivotal importance in the production of Buddhist texts and art in the first centuries CE. Since the mid-nineteenth century, excavations of Gandharan monastery sites have revolutionized the study of early Buddhism. Among the treasures unearthed are hundreds of reliquaries--containers housing relics of the Buddha. This volume combines art history, Buddhist history, ancient Indian history, archaeology, epigraphy, linguistics, and numismatics to clarify the significance and function of these reliquaries. The story begins with the Buddha's last days, his death and funerary arrangements, and the distribution of the cremated remains, which initiated a relic cult. Chapters describe Gandharan reliquary types and subgroups, the archaeological and historical significance of collections, and the paleographic and linguistic interpretation of the inscriptions on the reliquaries. The 400 reliquaries illustrated and surveyed are from museums and private collections in Pakistan, India, Japan, Europe, and North America. Stone is the primary material of construction, along with bronze, gold, and silver. Shapes range from spherical and cylindrical to miniature stupas, a configuration that provides valuable information about the history of this Buddhist monumental form. 随着考古发掘工作的迅速发展，佛教梵文文物的发现越来越多。考古研究工作者遇到这灰文物却如读天书、茫然不知其义，踏颇铁鞋，却不得其解。我们知道梵文是印度的古文，懂得的人不多，加之这类文物的字体与现今所习见的字体不同，故这些东西瑞在在中国很少人能读通，这对我们研究这类文物应该说是一个障碍。
本书是作者近年来所完成的一项大工程。明永乐大钟重46吨，内外汉梵佛教经咒铭文23万，其中梵字5000有余。《永乐大钟梵字铭文考》的完成使近600年的佛钟铭文第一次得以解读，让读者一睹其奥秘，这不能不说是一件令人高兴的事。

《墨池编(套装共2册)》二十卷，宋朱长文撰。长文，字伯原，号潜溪隐夫，两浙路苏州吴人（今江苏省苏州市）。朱氏富于藏书，博通经史，勤于著述，至老不辍，有《春秋通志》、《吴郡图经续记》、《琴史》、《续书断》、《乐圃余稿》等多种著作传于世。全书分为字学、笔法、杂议、品藻、赞述、宝藏、碑刻、器用八门，‘每门又各析次第，皆引古人成书而编类之，搜辑甚博，前代遗文往往藉以考见’。（《四库提要》）仿《法书要録》之例，‘而益求广博，每卷末或篇末，时有评论，俱极精道’。（《书画书録解题》）历代笔法、品鉴及碑刻、文房之论，汇集于斯，提示门径，昭示成就，堪称书史经典著作。

《宝刻丛编》二十卷，南宋陈思编。陈思，字绩芸，生卒年不详，宋理宗时（二一二五-一二六四）在世。南宋临安（今浙江杭州）人。官成忠郎、国史实录院秘书省搜访。编刊《宝刻丛编》、《海棠谱》、《书苑菁华》、《小字录》和《雨宋名贤小集》，着有《书小史》十卷。
《宝刻丛编》著录从战国时秦国石鼓文、诅楚文到五代时的石刻文字的目录，除碑刻外也包括少量铜钮、铜钟、铁器的铭文，还收录了部分法帖石刻。全书按《元丰九域志》所载宋地方行政区划编排，并包括了淮河以北地区。将保存于各州郡的石刻名目依年代顺序排出，凡地点不详的石刻都列在第二十卷之中。书中每条石刻名称之后，摘录了各家的题跋，主要有《集古录》、《金石录》、《隶释》、《隶续》，还有《诸道石刻录》、《访碑录》、《京兆金石录》、《复斋碑录》、曾南丰《集古录》、《资古绍志录》等。
光绪十四年（一八八八），湖州著名藏书家陆心源将《宝刻丛编》纳入十万卷楼丛书，刊刻梓行。陆氏刻书校订精审，刊刻精美，这也是《宝刻丛编》传世诸本中较为精善的刻本。今据此影印。

「搜採極其繁富，持論十分精審。」史學大師鄧廣銘曾經以這句話，高度概括陳學霖在歷史研究方面的深厚造詣。 本書是陳學霖的最後著作，保持了作者在史學與史識方面的一貫水準；論題涵蓋宋朝及明朝的政治與行政問題、外交使節往來、宗教信仰、史料及史學的探索等等，對諸多重要歷史課題均有原創性的探討和分析，並在詮釋、研究角度和資料運用方面有所突破。

人生观不受科学的支配，科学解决不了人生观的问题，这是1923年2月张君劢在清华大学的讲演《人生观》的基本观点。同年4月，丁文江在《努力周报》发表《玄学与科学》，批评张君劢的观点，从而拉开了论战的序幕。随后，论战的一方是以丁文江、胡适、吴稚晖为代表的所谓“科学派”，另一方是以张君劢、梁启超为代表的所谓“玄学派”。这场科学与人生观的论战影响广泛而深刻，对后世以至当今思想生活都不无启发意义。本书是当年“科学与人生观”之文章结集，有胡适和陈独秀作序，真刀真枪的思想交锋，是思想操练的好战场。
