《日本古代随笔选》主要内容：统观全书各段，作者显然并不是有意识地用她那优美、含蓄的文笔经营着什么大块文章或组织得严密的作品，而只是对眼前的事件，景物作直观的写照，很象是电影中各种不同的情趣之所在。外国读者在刚一接触日本的和歌、徘句时，对它人瓣睛现手法不大容易适应，因为它们大都是捕捉瞬间的印象和感受，而且那对象往往又是十分细微的事物。
而且作者是十分懂得什么叫风趣、幽默的，她所表现的又可以说是真正日本式的风趣，幽默的，她所表现的又可以说是真正日本的风趣、幽默。淡淡地说出的几句话，本来并无意于取笑，回想起来却使你大笑不止，余味无穷。

讀書同時評書，思考文字也同時思考自己。書評總離不開解說、分析、判論，但關鍵是為誰解說？以何態度分析？又為什麼而判論？書評不為讀者、不為作品也不為市場而服務，書評不是為他人作嫁衣裳，書評不是請客吃飯。書評可能是回應客體存在的革命，也可能是面對自我的戰爭。書評原來是一個人內在最後僅餘的部份。

本書為鄧小樺於2006年9月至2007年9月期間，明報世紀版專欄「meanwhile．斑駁日常」之結集。專欄篇幅短小，每篇附有snap shot照片，傳達生活中的微妙瞬間，比起傳統專欄，更具清新氣息和時代感。本書中從作者個人日常獨居，寫到人際情感，再到城市的熱門話題；以用個人私己的顯微鏡，看到在地的城市面貌和世界的規律。本書題材在地（local），寫法則較接近西方的隨筆試寫（essays），細膩情感中有哲理閃光，在本地專欄中是異軍突起。

弹词是明清以来江南一带流行的说唱艺术，弹词小说在清代的南方，是与白话章回小说分庭抗礼的叙事文学形式。本书以17世纪以降，尤其是18到19世纪女性创作的弹词小说为研究对象，探讨两方面的主题：一是女性的阅读、书写、出版与自我心灵世界中的私密欲望之间的关系；二是现实中面临着世代、变局的弹词女作家在文字世界中所表达的焦虑、困惑 以及 她们由此而构筑的自己的诠释系统与对应方式。全书通过对那些中夜不眠的才女作家及其作品的爬梳、整理、描述，与现代女作家所面对的类似的心灵问题遥相对应，在探寻中国最早的女性创作小说的同时，某种程度上也改写了清代小说史的面貌。

马洛受雇于堪萨斯州来的小妹妹奎斯特小姐，寻找她失踪的哥哥奥林。
